4th Pick Thread (1 Viewer)

Didn't see one yet. So you probably got Foster, ADP, CJ and then...do you go Vick or Rodgers? Will Charles keep it going enough to warrant the slot? Or is that a good time to grab a lock WR like Andre Johnson? I'm leaning towards Vick, hope he stays healthy, likely starting a run on QBs allowing a top RB to be available in the 2nd.

Thoughts?

I have the 4th pick in a 10-team superflex league, and I'm taking Vick if he's still there at 4. If he's gone, then Rodgers. If they're both gone, then I'll probably take one of the big 3 RBs.

In a standard type league I think I'd probably take Rice or Charles there. QB value isn't high enough to warrant taking one at 4 when you still have a shot at an elite RB. I think 4 is too early for a WR, too, but it depends on starting lineup requirements and scoring system. If possible, I might just try to trade down from the 4 spot to somewhere later in the first round.

that looks like a solid top 3 picks...if you see how many people on this board are somewhat worried about Foster, you might see him fall to #4..

I was like you, 4th pick last year, 10 team PPR league.went for AJ..worked out well.

what I've noticed from taking a WR that early in a snake draft, is that you will be somewhat light at RB..my draft would have worked perfectly well had Mendenhall not been selected one spot before my second pick..that forced me to look at guys like Shonn Greene, Best, etc..if you're 100% certain that you can get a solid RB in picks #2/3, go for it ( AJ). taking a WR like AJ at #4 gives you a guaranteed 100 recs..with the volatility at the top of the draft, it's a safe investment..

Ray Rice would be available at #4...

I wouldn't bite on the Vick hoopla just yet..I'd prefer to let someone else make the mistake of taking him early. Now, he could be a FF monster this season, but his scrambling ability makes me worried that he'll take a hit that will put him out for a few games..another thing about him is that defense coordinators have had the entire offseason to study Vick and devise gameplans to stop him..I'll pass on Vick..

when you pick at the top part of the draft like this the one thing you can least afford is a flop/bust..if that #4 pick busts, your season is likely doomed..you want to make that pick the safest bet to produce top pts per week, and you want to select someone who has been a top producer..I think Vick has a big chance to flop this season..

and even if Vick was fantasy gold in 2011, you really don't need to take a QB that early, especially if you're in a 10 team league..once people take a starting QB they don't return to that position till much later in the draft, leaving you with the 10th best QB on the board..Eli, Big Ben, etc..doesn't make sense to take a QB early when you need to get RB's and WR's.I don't know your league's scoring system butI doubt selecting Vick would start a run on QB's..early parts of drafts are almost always RBs.if you're dead set on taking a QB, then I'd go Rodgers.or Brady.

the following I would say are safe bets at #4, assuming PPR:

Ray Rice

Larry Fitzgerald

AJ

Foster

ADP

CJ

I'm not a big fan of ADP or the Vikings in general, but I realize others are and someone is likely to snag him at pick 2/3..

McFadden *should* be a beast this season, and would make a nice #4 pick.

Good points and apologize for not adding enough detail about my perspective based on my league specs. Its a 10 team PPR snake draft and Rice and Mcfadden are keepers so I subconsciously neglected them even for objective discussion. I'm pretty confident I would take Rice there if possible. Mcfadden still a little scary that high IMO.

I don't draft for a few weeks so have time to chew on it but I'm really high on Vick. I've read all the pros and cons in the Vick at #1 thread but just think the risk is worth the reward this year.

Your biggest hope is that 1 of ADP, CJ, or Foster are left and you can have an easy decision. This will happen in plenty of leagues. Otherwise, the good news with the lack of value in the 4 spot is that it allows you to build your team around a guy that YOU really believe in. Evaluate the next 10-12 players on your board about who you feel most comfortable with and every one of them is an acceptable pick here IMO. In some ways that can be good for your team and maybe even more fun to root for. You need to especially evaluate the top WRs from this spot. There is a good chance your RBs and/or QB will be dictated for you (based on mocking).

Although I'm high on Rodgers, I think I'd pass from the 4 spot. The 4/5 turn seems to be ideal for grabbing the tail end of the top QB tier.

IF the RB's slide early, I like this route...

1.4 CJ/ADP/Foster

2.9 MJD/SJax

3.4 Wallace

4.9 Mike Williams TB

5.4 Romo/Rivers

Otherwise, I'm leaning this direction...

1.4 Ajohnson

2.9 Fitz/DJax/Wallace

3.4 Hillis

4.9 Bradshaw/DWill

5.4 Romo/Rivers

ive always played standard leagues non-ppr so i havent put a ton of thought into how id pick in a ppr situation. but ive put a bit of thought into my draft out of the 4 slot this year in a standard league.

a few notes are im in a 12 team espn standard, league is just with average players so the draft generally follows the espn rankings relativly close hence why a few players fall lower than they probably should. our league starts 3wr and 2rb with now flex

ill just run through each round as i see it so far with the pick # for me in parenthsis

1st (4)- pretty sure that the first 3 in my league will be AP,Foster, Vick so im happy making the decision between CJ2k, Charles and Rice. As of now i rank them rice, cj2k, charles because of the johnson's holdout

2nd (21) here i plan to grab an elite WR if available or even a strong RB. usually look for Calvin Johnson, Mcfadden, Fitzgerald, Stevin Jackson, and Hakeem Nicks at this spot. usually grabbing in that order.

3rd (28) here i almost exclusively have been taking a wr looking for guys like vincent jackson, mike wallace, reggie wayne, miles austin with considerations on blount if he remains there.

4th (45) i usually try to grab a rb like best if he falls to me here, but its normally the best player available between rb/wr's for me able to grab mike williams, felix jones or santonio holmes here.

5th (52) shonn greene has been falling to me here and i am happy to have him as my backup RB or RB2 here. depending on wether i have 3wr and 2rb or 3rb and 2wr after the first 5 rounds my draft strategy becomes look for the value on the lesser position.

6th (69) i look for a wr like austin collie or manningham here if i havent drafted my 3rd wr, if i have i look for a qb like ryan, big ben, or freeman available or can grab an elite TE like vernon davis.

7th (76) here is where i either grab my QB if i went with a WR in the 6th or i try to get a guy like ryan grant, owen daniels or marshawn lynch to backup a thin rb core (2rb in first 5 rounds)

8th and on i start looking for good value plays with guys like lance moore, beanie wells, jimmy graham filling in spots that havent been filled like TE or backup WR's.

if you want to talk about each round and players available im happy to elaborate more but that is the general feeling i have gotten out of the 4th pick in all the mock drafts ive done so far this summer.

hope its helpful, i look forward to seeing what other 4th picks are doing here.

12 team nonPPR

scoring TDs(for ALL): 1-29yds (6pts), 30-39yds (9pts), 40+yds (12pts)

RB yardage - RB must gain 50yds (5pts) then gets 1pt every additional 10yds rush, 1pt every 10yds rec

QB yardage - QB must throw for 200yds (10pts) then gets 1 pt every additional 10yds pass, 1pt every 10yds rush

Question with 4th pick:

Foster and Peterson going #1/#2

pick 3 will be either Brees (homer) or Rogers (slim possibility CJ3)

leaves me with the option of CJ3 (maybe Rogers), J. Charles, R. Rice or Vick??????

I thinkn that Rice is the safest pick, but Vick is veeery tempting......

Here are my rankings for the top 4 players:

1. Peterson

2. Foster

3. Johnson

4. Charles

On the way back around, hope to get a Greg Jennings or Reggie Wayne.

With CJ's holdout, Im starting to think that Charles moves ahead of him in PPR formats. Also, I'm kind of surprised more people aren't on board with Charles at the #4 slot, and I fully expect him to have a monster season. In my opinion, it's between Charles and Rice at the #4 slot in a PPR league (and where QB's get 4 points per TD pass).

I can't argue with AJ at four, but think you have a better chance finding WR's that will outperform ADP later in the draft

been doing more and more mock drafts and occasionally steven jackson or darren mcfadden falls to me in my 2nd round pick. (and yes its possible in my league too) so ive been toying with the thought of going 3 rb's in my first 5 picks despite the starting lineup in our league being 2rb and 3wr. i feel like having that depth at rb could be just what i need down the road for a trade or if an injury or unexpected turn occurs. thoughts on grabbing a person who is a "bench" player that early in the draft?

would end up going rb, rb, wr, wr, rb, instead of grabbing rb, wr, wr, wr, rb. ive found greene left in the 5th round in some of my drafts due to espn ranking him lower than he should be and ive been snatching him up as my 2rb or my 3rb, but i guess i could grab a wr there also with an adp around 52.

thoughts, figure others with the 4th pick in their respective leagues would be thinking through similar issues

and this is a 12 team non-ppr league

12 team ppr, flex, TE must, 6pt all tds, pretty standard with everything else

I also have Dez Bryant as a keeper for a 6th rd pick this year. So, my drafting and thoughts will bear that in mind:

- Would love to see Jennings fall to me at 2.9 but he's not doing that in most mocks i've done

- i'm fine with Rice, CJ, or Charles in Rd 1. CJ will come back and will be the usual CJ this year. Even if he does hold out, Ringer will be on my team as a handcuff and i'm fine rolling with him til CJ comes back

- Unless Jennings is there in rd 2, and unless Manning comes back and Wayne is there, i'm almost certainly going RB-RB to start. I've just been hurt by lack of RB depth the past few years. but i always seem to be able to find a WR on the WW during the season. So, i'll be stacking my RBs up during the draft this year

- QBs fly off the board in my league, so i'm not counting on anyone being there in Rd 3 for me. Unless Rivers or Brees slips, i'll be waiting around for Schaub, Ryan, or Freeman. Maybe even Big Ben. Still not sure how long i can hold out on any of those though
