A Day Without Immigrants- Protests planned for February 14 (1 Viewer)

These folks mean to show us that undocumented labor is vital to this country and they plan to go on strike to prove it: They want a Path to Citizenship. It’s way past time to give them one. I doubt this will work this time around but it’s a new start.

Nobody is against legal immigration.  It is illegal immigration that is against Federal Laws that upsets people.

I know.  But that makes no difference to the folks already here. And most of the farm labor and migrant labor is illegal, always has been. So let’s make them legal.

I've no problem with a path to citizenship. But you need to give to get. Until you have a corresponding border security initiative that satisfies the other side, this will go nowhere.

I know that too. I’d be willing to accept much greater security on the border, a “techno” wall so to speak that people have been talking about, without the terrible visuals that an actual wall would bring. I don’t love the idea but that’s my solution anyhow.

So when these people out themselves, business are going to have to terminate them or face legal consequences.  It always puzzled me, the only time the left wants to enforce any policies concerning illegal immigration, is to criminalize businesses for hiring them.  The left wants illegal immigrants to be able to part take in schools, hospitals, welfare and other government program, and some even voting.  The left does not even like police to arrest them for any reason.   But the left has no issues on punishing businesses for hiring them.

Most on the left are opposed to punishing businesses for this. So I have no idea what you’re referring to.

Just because 100k illegals want to come in and be legal, doesnt mean they should.  The illegals shouldn’t dictate the terms.
Sure.  But certain limits to it also leads to other issues.  I think many in favor of more legal immigration would love to see more immigration judges to deal with the huge caseload.

   but Trump makes another appearance
As a relevant response to who may not be in favor of legal immigration.  And likely still has members of the GOP supporting the same limitations to legal immigration.

LOL

Poster:  "Nobody does that"

SHO:  Here is one guy  I destroyed your nobody assumption

Can't make this up.

🚔
One guy?  He was PoTUS and instituted policies supported by his party.

Your attempts at the gotcha continue to just miss completely.

I’m missing the boat on why should we let everyone in who wants in?  What other country does that?

We’re not like any other country. We are the New World. Come here and start over. That’s always been our history.

We’re unique, and better than all the rest. Be proud!

Not gonna lie. I read the title and my first thought was this was a right wing protest around getting rid of immigrants.

so you okay with dropping off or letting in 2 million illegal immigrants from the Congo next week in California?  how about 1 million?  how about from a little closer to home from Haiti or Nicaragua?  according to your posts it is a net gain for our country.  maybe let in 4 million?  that should really jump start the good old USA.

I doubt that many would or could come. Not everyone even wants to come here. But if they want to, more power to them. They will, IMO, make better Americans than many people  here already. And none of us have any more moral right to be here than they do.

depending on moral right now?  my great grandparents came the right way & were granted citizenship.  they did not sneak across the border.  moral right?  LOL

My grandparents did sneak across a border. There is no “right way” to come here.

You seem to be confusing moral and legal.  I think it’s plenty moral to take your family to a place where they can prosper or away from a place where they are in danger.

Why do we need a jump start?  Stock market baby!

My Indian (India) customers detest illegals - because they did it the right way co come here.

Who is saying that?  I think there is a middle ground between the previous administration and letting everyone in.
What is the middle ground?  All We want is to control who comes into the country - especially in a pandemic.  People lost their jobs over mask mandates but the caravans come in.

I suspect in ten years we will regret allowing uncontrolled illegals entering this country.  Supporters claim we need them for farm workers.  Well myself and my brother have a 2000 cow dairy operation.  We use to hire 30 employees to feed and milk the cows, we went the AI route and installed robot milking machines, and computer chipped the cattle for feeding, we now have five employees which is more then we need.  We use to hire people to to weed our crops, but with GMO seeds and new chemicals no need for that.  We have auto steer/ GPS on our tractors/harvesting equipment—basically self driving the equipment.  I have a friend who has a tree nut farm in CA, they have a machine that shakes the tree and collects the nuts no human touch.  I have a home in AZ when we landscaped the property  with rocks-the contractor showed up with a dump truck and a machine that spread the rocks, he told me he use to have 15/employees he now has two.  Machines are being developed that can pick fruit that is ripe and and leave unripe on the plant, such as strawberries.  Three D printers have even built houses.  So what happens to these people when manual labor jobs disappear, become doctors?  Even the food service industry is looking at machines that can prepare food.

Great perspective to think about.   Thanks for the post.

So Democrats want to ignore the laws on illegals coming in, but once they are here they want the laws changed to allow them to be citizens?  Pretty good racket.

I work with many engineers and others from India in the auto business.  Right or wrong they detest illegal immigration as every one of them applied and entered legally.  Some had spouses that had to wait 1-2 year to be granted citizenship, but they wanted to do it lawfully.

Democrats don’t want this at all. Democrats are more to blame than Republicans for the situation we face. Republicans are generally opposed to illegal immigration, but Democrats had the power to grant a path to citizenship in 2009. They did not do so because they are scared and also because they want to continue to use this issue to garner support among Latinos, but not lose white labor votes.

Between the two parties it’s the Democrats who IMO have behaved more shamefully.

Same here.  I’ve worked closely with a lot of Indians who are here on H1B visas.  When their Visa expires they go back to India to reapply the legal way, often leaving their wife and kid behind in America.  They don’t complain.  They respect our laws and do things above board and legal.  And yes they get extremely resentful when they see illegals violating the rules with impunity.

I get their attitude but logically it makes no sense, first because they (Indians) could not have crossed borders to come here without papers, and second because it.is far easier for an applicant from India to get here than it is for a poor migrant from Latin America. For the latter it’s almost impossible. There is no “right way” to come here, no line that the Indians have waited in that Latin Americans are waiting in too.

Then that's why the case should be made to change the laws.  Legal immigrants don't like it, and all the polling shows the majority of Americans want action taken at the border.  If people want to run on letting everyone in that's great, but it won't win many places.  Some better argument is going to have to be made to those folks than saying that it's only moral to let everyone in because somehow the people here won the birth lottery.  I understand the thought, but it's not practical.  We have to have a country, with borders, and customs for the melting pot to work.

impossible?  Really?

ICE data shows a massive drop in deportations in FY ‘21 compared to previous years, despite much higher encounters.

FY 21: 55,590 deportations 1.7 million encounters

FY 20: 185,884 deportations 458,000 encounters

FY 19: 267,258 deportations 977,000 encounters

Oh I understand. And I agree with you mostly. People call me an “open borders” guy and sometimes I call myself that, but I’m actually for pretty strong borders (not a wall though.) AND more immigration.
I just hate how the illegals are scapegoated all the time, particularly by the last administration. And they’re here already and there’s 15 million of them. The status quo is untenable and they’re not leaving, Stupid not to give them legal status.

We are either a nation of laws or we aren’t.

There’s no “I’ll follow the laws I like and will ignore the laws I don’t like”

You want more immigration?  Do it the right way - legally, through the legislative process.

It’s really that simple.

We’re discussing different issues.
What I wrote is that it is nearly impossible for a poor migrant to apply for an American visa. You need to have money and connections. If you don’t have those, your only way to get here is through illegal means. There is no line for you to get in.
