I just wanted to share with you guys a League setup of mine I am really starting to enjoy. I wrote it up four years ago, because I wanted something different. It's a bit involved but it's been alot of fun. The league has generated a ton of activity and has become my favorite by far. So I just thought I would throw it out there in-case anyone was looking to do something different. It's a 25 man roster league. Each team gets a 100$ a year, each year any left over money is rolled into the next year. Cap dollars can be traded. We did a draft to start the league. After the draft owners had to sign their players to contract. For a veteran every one salary cap dollar spent would produce one contract year. For a rookie every one dollar spent would produce two contract years. If you cut a player during the year you have to pay him the full salary for that year only. If a player is traded in season the new team picks up the salary for the entire year. Throughout the year we have blind bid auctions to pick up free agents, you use salary cap dollars to do this. through the year I award small amounts of salary cap dollars for various achievements, like winning the league survivor pool, or High score, the scrub bowl stuff like that.
There are no contract extensions. Each off season before the new year begins you can cut any player without having to pay them for the upcoming season, until a week before the draft, at that point their salary is locked in for the year. Each year we get together and have the rookie draft and do an in person blind auction for free agents. The team with the highest bid wins the player. That team gets to sign the player to a contract anywhere from 1$+ the next highest bidder up to his bid. Each year you can franchise one player whose contract years go to zero. You have to pay that player the avg salary of the top 5 aid at his position from the previous year. If you do so, the money is subtracted from your team and the player is listed on your roster at a 0$ contract for one year.Franchise player can be bid on by any team that is not the franchise team. The winning team must send two 1st round picks in any combination of picks from that years draft and/or the next. The winning team must also send the franchise fee to the team that just lost the franchise player. You can trade the franchise players, but you cant trade him for another franchise player. If a franchise player is traded, his new team can sign him to whatever contract they want, but they must sign him to a contract within 48 hours or lose the player.
Only rookies drafted can be placed onto the the 3 man taxi squad. Players on the taxi squad do not count against the roster and do not require a contract. As soon as a player is promoted he must be signed to a new deal. If the player is no longer a rookie he does not get the 1$ for two year bonus. Each rookie draft only goes 4 rounds.
Having franchise players, pushes action, because it creates alot of win-win situations. Great players get traded b/c their deals are expiring and only one guy can get franchised. Being able to trade cap dollars gives alot of wiggle room in trades, guys will constantly come back with add 4$ and it's a deal. The cap dollars provide a way to even out trades that are otherwise close but one party feels like they need a little more. Stealing franchise players gets people fired up. You have a ton to think as far as strategy. Not only must you evaluate talent, but you need to factor in contract. Is one year of Manning, plus a franchise tag next year worth 5 years of Steve Smith NYG? Rebuilding is easier, because you can sell your guys for picks in a bad year, and next year come back and corner the free agent class while drafting young studs. Build a team of high paid Mercenaries back up by young guys. If you can build through the draft it gets you the best value, and if you can sustain a healthy payroll, for years. You have to choose how to stagger contracts because having too many hit the same year will make you vulnerable. With teams working different strategies, with franchise players, cap dollars and all that, it makes trading easier and people really get into it. Being able to use cap dollars for incentive means we can do alot of fun little things through the year.
I use MFL because it does everything I need. Feel free to ask questions.
