While packing orders I thought I saw my dog Rocky licking his paw on the porch…Went out to tell him to stop & dear reader, let me tell you he was not licking his paw.

Nope, he had caught a big fat brown squirrel, and was happily gnawing on its brains after cracking its little skull open like a juicy walnut (chunks of skull were everywhere).

Half its head was gone, and in that moment I heard someone yell “aaaaaaaah!!!”

Ok, so it turned out that someone was me, because good god it was straight zombie movie nightmare fuel. Mystery solved on that front.

Rocky looked super pleased with himself, after what I can only assume was a delicious little sesos snack. Called the vet, they were none concerned as his shots are all up to date, and “the dietary variety might actually be good for him”.
🤢 🤮

Poor lil guy can’t figure out why I don’t want him to lick me right now. Dogs, man.

You shoulda put a little Black Label Reserve on that squirrel for him.

My last dog caught and killed her share of squirrels in our back yard, but I don't think ever ate parts of any of them. Now, the rabbits usually ended up as half rabbits by the time I realized she had one, and it was always the back half missing. The first time was the worst as I didn't know to get her on de-worming meds after it happened.

Welcome to having a 🐶

Ours have brought birds, gophers and rabbits they've killed back in the house proud as can be.

I’ve had em my whole life. Never had one gnaw the top of a squirrel’s head off before and eat its brains. 🤢

My lab Lucky would find a dead squirrel in the park from time to time and roll in it. Instant bath time. Yuck.

But hey, I’m actually kinda relieved he wasn’t licking his paw.

One of my dogs is our Huntress. She's gotten more squirrels than I can remember over the last decade, some mice, a pretty sizeable rat, and has tried a few times for skunks and raccoons. I think her goal in life was a bird but she was never fast enough and now has gotten older. She's even chased some deer from time to time that laugh at her. She's very lucky some coyotes didn't get her on 2 different occasions including one where she needed stitches.

But the rabbits are too cute... she just got another at a park we hike at about a month ago. Yeah those are the ones that get to me. She once brought a baby rabbit to me and it was rough, glad my wife never saw it.

We had a black lab/ border collie mix that caught a dove once. She did this backflip move and snagged it out of the air as it was flying overhead. She landed on the ground and didn't know what to do next so she opened her mouth. When the bird tried to start flying away again, she lunged and caught it, shook her head, and then finally listened to my "drop it" command. Unfortunately, it was too late for the bird.

Was the worst thing I've ever seen a dog do.

My kids adopted a feral kitten who lived in an alley by taking him food, gradually moving the food closer and closer until the kitten allowed touching. And that kitten turned into the most grateful animal I've ever seen. They brought him home, he immediately adopted all of us, learned the litter box usage right away, but still preferred going outside. We took him to the vet for a checkup and shots. He was the size of a 9-week-old kitten but was actually between 6 and 9 months of age. He'd just been semi-starving his whole life. He finally grew to 9 pounds and that was it. And he never gave up killing animals because that's how he had lived and kept himself alive. So we'd get a steady supply of pigeons and headless squirrels at our back door. I guess the heads were a delicacy. That wasn't the worst, though.

The worst was the year he found a rabbit nest and started bringing home helpless baby rabbits. It's still shocking to me now. One of the baby rabbits was squealing outside and I got it away from the cat. The cat had peeled back all the rabbit's skin halfway down its body, and it was still alive and screaming. It was awful, I was shook and didn't know how to dispatch it so I put it in a water-filled Ziploc bag in the freezer. I've been through some pretty nasty experiences in life and always manage to stay calm, but that baby rabbit shook me so bad. Still does.

My Lucky was a black lab border collie mix. He was the BEST frisbee dog - he’d do that move to catch a frisbee whether he needed to or not.

Great mix, super fun dog. Ball is life.

Yikes. A quick smack with a shovel seems more humane. I had to do that to a baby heron that was abandoned and dying in the parking lot of a greenhouse I worked at in Holland. It was grim but it was the right thing to do.

My old house we were on the outskirts of some open plains wilderness areas, we had quite a few hawks and falcons in the area and tons and tons of rabbits. I'd often see the birds flying around hunting or just hanging out in trees or on top of roofs. Typically in the spring time every year I would fairly regularly find entrails, sometimes one half of a rabbit cleanly sliced in two like with a razor, a random leg, or sometimes just big puffs of fur in a pile. Nature is pretty rough and raw.

The edge of the neighborhood backing up to the wilderness areas all the houses had 3-foot split rail fences, it was not unusual certain times of year to see coyotes pacing the fence lines looking for littler-size dogs people had left unattended. :sadbanana:

Could be worse.
Our cat caught a stripped gopher, didn't kill it, brought it in the house and let it go.

We had our entire living room turned over as we chased it from under one piece of furniture to the next.
Stupid cat
