Accepted a Job Offer - Delayed 1 month (1 Viewer)

Applied for a new job back in November.  IT Developer Senior position. Wasn't really actively looking but this was a slightly larger company with a good outlook (Credit Union).

Had a phone interview with their hiring department, then a phone interview with 3 different groups.  In January, had an in person interview with 3 groups which went well.

Was given an offer which which I negotiated, close to same salary, larger bonus, better 401K match.  This new job had a larger potential for growth while current employer has had 2 layoffs in the last 18 months.  I would consider myself the top developer out of 3 they have in our particular discipline, so I felt pretty safe, but thinking at 50 this might be my last move.  Also, this would reduce my commute from 40-50 minutes  to 15-20 each way which was a huge factor in my decision.

One of my sticking points was my loss of this years bonus to be paid in mid March and they offered to have my start date be on April 6th to let me get my bonus and give 2 weeks notice.

I am supposed to give my notice at the end of this week or next Monday.  With what is going on in the world, I am really nervous about what to do.  In my school district an employee at the schools was diagnosed on Saturday and all schools in the county are closed indefinitely.

I called the HR hiring person I had dealt with on Friday, but they were out of the office on Tuesday.  I am going to call tomorrow and leave a voicemail.  Would it be wrong for me to ask to delay my start date for some time given the current conditions?  With my current employer, I will be able to work from home for weeks/months without issue,  with my new employer, they said there are WFH opportunities, but I do not know how that would occur with new training etc.

I was looking forward to this opportunity, but this seems like really bad timing.  I don't want to blow this opportunity, but I'm also concerned about what is going on financially and where I would lie in the new company if cuts need to occur.  I feel secure where I am now and know they would not like to lose me.

I really do not know what to do..

I don't have good advice for you but based on your story and knowing what city you work in you currently work with my brother(small world)

I would not leave my current job until I verified I still had the new position

Woah, small world is right.  Agreed, I will definitely be confirming.

I know this didn't get much traction with everyone pretty much in one thread at this point.  Just bumping up to the top for other opinions.

Thanks

My wife is in a somewhat similar boat. She was verbally offered a job early last week, and is waiting on HR to send a formal written offer. She did not and would not put in her notice at the current gig until she received the written offer, but now we're wondering if she'll even get the formal offer. Hopefully the worst case scenarios is that they ask her to wait a month or two to start. I would think it'd be hard to work remote as a brand new employee.

In your case, I'd do what you did and reach out to HR to make sure things haven't changed. Also ask if WFH is an option in the current climate. I think you'll have a better idea once you can talk to somebody in HR. Of course, they might still be trying to figure stuff out on their end for their existing employees and maybe haven't given much thought to getting new folks onboard given the circumstances.

Re-open negotiations with your new employer, and ask for 10% of your salary to be paid in TP, deliverable to your home each Friday.

I wouldn’t avoid the new job. I’ll assume you’ve already gotten the written offer and accepted it. They’ve already made an accommodation for your bonus (are you sure you’ll get it all?), so I doubt they’d be a problem. Talk to them about WFH and getting up to speed quickly. Honestly, I think the getting up to speed is likely more on you. If you are WFH, I’d make sure I got every bit of materials and I’d stay on top of it, i.e. letting your boss know progress and asking for additional materials. If you can schedule something in office make sure you are extra prepared so you can ask more advanced questions (not to look smart, but to get all the details down). Take really good notes too. It’s a credit union as well, a place I wouldn’t consider cutthroat where they pull the offer.

Have you gotten the bonus? If you have, I’d put in notice and not worry.

Got the Bonus on Friday.  Was not as much as I hoped.  Wish I had just taken it at the original point as I would be trained and somewhat up to speed.

I am not at all same industry as you.  Got an amazing offer and accepted last week.

Did not put in notice right away and feeling vulnerable/indecisive.

eta - I have never accepted then backed out of a position.  I will encounter these people again.

Anybody who holds someone’s indecisiveness or uneasiness about something as enormous as changing jobs given the current climate is an ####### and they’ll most likely show off that quality pretty frequently when you work with them.

Thanks for the replies.

Update:  Called the HR Hiring rep, left a voicemail.  New Manager reached out and left a voicemail and email.  Said he was glad I reached out, their entire IT dept was now working remotely for now, that the offer was still open and they would make accommodations for training online and via conference/virtual means.  Was leaving it up to me if I wanted to delay a start date.  Also said that they have changed focus to mostly KIR while the area I was going to start in was mostly new development/project work.

Told him at this point I would prefer to move the date out 1 month and we can re-evaluate at that time.

Feeling much better about this for now.  Also, my current job went to WFH today moving forward.
