Adult Tonsilectommmmyyyyyyyy.... (1 Viewer)

Had mine out when I was 15 and it royally sucked. Horrible sore throat for > 2 weeks and I lost 20 pounds. Avoid any acidic food like the plague. Had my wisdom teeth out a couple years later and that was a walk in the park compared to my tonsillectomy.

Worst experience I've ever had, got them out at 25. Got caught in a vicious cycle of not eating because I was in too much pain and not healing because I was not eating/getting nutrients. I lost about 20-25 pounds in 10 days.

I think I may be having one soon.

How screwed am I?
Royally. Had everything in my throat ripped out a few years ago in order to breathe better (sleep apnea). Most pain I've ever felt. It was like swallowing razor blades for two weeks. Good luck!
my 38 year old brother in law had his out last year, and this is how he described it too. couldn't eat #### all for about 3 weeks, and lost about 30 lbs.

I told my wife just to get me some books and Rome Total war 2 or something and I will just sit in a corner and not bother her.

Question. Were milkshakes an issue?

Im one of the lucky ones... my tonsils just disappeared/deteriorated as I became an adult. No fuss.

Meanwhile one of my best friends had a painful tonsillectomy when he was about 20. One of them slowly regenerated and now a pain in the neck.

Painkillers are the kicker. My Doc said due to my severe Apena she would not give me the full strength I would typically need. :-(

Don't use a straw for your milkshake though. I don't remember if it was for my tonsils or wisdom teeth, but they warned that suction can remove the clot off the site and insight bleeding. (Insert #### sucking joke here.)

Ice cream, applesauce, vanilla yogurt are good options.

My wife had hers out in her early 30s. Took about a month to fully heal and the first couple of weeks were rough. She couldn't eat anything because it hurt too much and would cause her throat to bleed........which meant that she wouldn't heal because of no nutrients. Her doctor eventually suggested she get some Slim-Fast since she could drink liquids without too much pain. That helped a lot so I'd recommend getting some for after surgery.

The nurse will be submitting to insurance in June for an August surgery date.

The true test my friends will be If I can survive being home with my wife for 2 weeks.

I had mine out at 21. It was embarrassing. The post-op directions were for the parents. The waiting room was decorated in early kindergarten.

And it hurt pretty bad. That Slimfast idea is a good one. Also, get a cold pack designed for the throat area. And some way to signal the wife you need something. Trust me, you aren't calling for her. I used a cowbell. Very necessary.

Was ringing it once enough, or did you find yourself needing more cowbell at times?:rim shot:

I actually struggled with milkshakes, ice cream, anything cold. I could only drink room temperature water. The cold actually hurt versus soothing.

+1 on the Slim-Fast advice. As I mentioned before I didn't heal because I couldn't eat. I finally started drinking chocolate Ensure. It was bliss.

I'm calling bs.I've never seen anyone over the age of 22 use that many mmmmms & yyyyyyys to spell a word. No chance you are an adultttttyyyyyyyyy!!!!

Good luck though. Sounds like a great excuse to get some pain meds, eat lots of ice cream, and lose some weight. If you are smart you will time this procedure to coincide with the world cup.

Had mine out as a kid and my wisdom teeth out as an adult. Tonsils out piece of cake; wisdon teeth was the worst experience of my life. And I have had one kidney stone in my 40s. That was awful too but I'd say the wisdom teeth extraction was worse.

In 2010 I had my tonsils, uvula and upper soft palate removed. Two weeks of the worst sore throat you've ever had.

Lots of prepackaged shakes, like Ensure and a billion freeze pops.

Freeze pops and a humidifier for when you're sleeping is the key.

Still not as bad as kidney stones though.

Mid 30's and I am a horrible speller. Tonsillectomy.

The World Cup idea is money, thanks.

Ok reaching out here for advice. So it's been delayed for a bit but now appears I will be having the ole Tonsils and UP3 out in the next month or so.

From what I read the UP3 portion is the horrific part. My wife (medical field) will be all over my pain meds, I.e. Keeping me on track, but I am literally freaked out by some of the comments I have seen online.

I look at it like this. I have very very severe apnea. This could seriously be a game changer for me especially with a 3yo and 1 month old. It may be intense consistent pain for 2-3 weeks but the benefit I would get is well worth it.

I am just freaked the hell out though. Talk me out of canceling the surgery.

I had it in 2010. See post #30.

The worst part is waking up in the am and not being able to swallow. You will need a humidifier.

Freeze pops and liquid vicodin will be your best friend.

You will also have to relearn how to swallow liquids. Even after everything was healed up, if I tried taking a big gulp of water, it would come out my nose.

Otherwise, no big deal. Better than dying in your sleep for sure.

Man up and DO IT. Then let me know how bad it was.

Mine is scheduled for August 20th (also having deviated septum fixed along with other nasal issues at the same time) and I am not at all looking forward to it. Good friend of my wifes (they are both RNs) had it done in January and she said the birth of her 2 children did not hurt as bad as this did.

Also, my ENT Doc said that this won't help much for severe sleep apnea (as in I have 1 episode a minute according to my sleep study) but does help with mild or moderate apnea; but he said it will help with my breathing overall and will reduce or eliminate my snoring which will make my wife happy. I still actually snore at times even with a CPAP since I have problems breathing through my nose.

I got my tonsils taken out and uvula shortened mainly for moderate apnea. My tonsils were pitted and gross. Would get tonsillitis 1-2 times a year.

Got it done about 5-6 years ago in my late 20's. Tell you the truth I barely remember the recovery. I would say I have an average pain threshold. I'm sure I was hopped up on pain meds for a week but all I remember is discomfort nothing excruciating.

I am probably going to man up and get it done.

Bogey I have Severe OSA and they told me the hope is to cut it in half. My goal is that I can get off of the autosv bipap and into a nice mouth guard.

"If" I get it done I will relate my experiences here. I have had a sore throat for a week now so getting rid of that would be cool.

Think they will let me keep my tonsils in a jar?

I usually recover from stuff fairly quickly pain wise so hopefully this won't be that different. I know it will suck but hopefully it will be a couple of days of pain meds then 2 weeks of video games and ice cream.

I have 2 or 3 books lined up and am going to get a few games also.

I have actually heard dairy increases the mucus in your mouth and is rougher? No clue here.

I guess I should read through the GMAT, but ehh.

I won't be able to play the sympathy card much with a 3yo and infant for my wife to watch, oh and the best part is since my mother in law was a nurse my wife thinks it's a good idea she stays over. :-(

My wifes a nurse but don't think I will be getting much sympathy there. I doubt I do the ice cream, that was more of a joke. Find out just how much I like broth probably.

My wife said something about her mother staying over since she doesn't work...no way! I hate hovering when I am sick and just want to be left alone.

I've been referred to have mine removed because of tonsil stones. Doesn't bother me so I may backout. Am curious though does the removal change your voice?

Not my speaking voice, but I can't sing well anymore... no range. I go up one octave and my voice cracks. Totally sucks. Makes sense when you think about it, that having stuff yanked out of your throat will affect your vocal cords, but I never thought about it. Wish my doc had mentioned it before the procedure.

No more karaoke prize money for me. :kicksrock:
