Advantage of Using Divisions? (1 Viewer)

I've been running a league with ten teams for four seasons. This year, we're adding two teams to make it twelve.

I've always run this league without divisions, just ten teams in a single standings bracket. Now that we're expanding, what is the advantage of breaking the league into two divisions?

Are there any problems with NOT using divisions in a league of this size?

Top 6 teams advance to playoffs, bottom 4 play toilet bowl bracket.

We use divisions. Division winners make the playoff and have higher seeding than the wildcard teams. I like divisions because our last 3 games of the season are within the division. Makes it exciting.

I play in a 16 team league like this so we have 4 divisions.

This.We actually take it a step further. The two division winners get a 1st round bye (again, making it more like real football) - making the regular season mean something. The other 4 wildcards play each other in the first round.

We have 10 teams and 2 divisions - you play each team in your own division twice and each in the other once. Works perfectly from a math standpoint. It also helps create division rivals, and makes trades a little more interesting. I'm typically more willing to trade a player with moe upside outside my division rather than to someone I will face twice a year (especially as it's a dynasty league).

In summary - advantages to divisions: Playoffs, division rivals and trades.

That and you get to name your divisions!
