Aesop Rock Could Be The Best Hip-Hop Artist Working Today. Okay, Hyperbole Was My Friend in 2016 (1 Viewer)

I find it odd that we have the same taste in music.
That's been said to me so many times by so many people. I find music liberating. That does not mean an adherence to the socialist left, a dogmatic predilection by a dogmatic sect; rather, I find rock n' roll and hip-hop a function of the bourgeoisie and disposable income.

Reasonable minds can disagree -- I'm skunked right now so maybe I can discuss the utter seeming lack of coherence between my musical tastes and politics later.

I'll make sense then.

But Aesop Rock drills down beats.

Jesussss ####### Christ, "Me too." would've sufficed.

But yeah, he's great.  In no particular order.. Daylight, Nightlight, Water, Catcomb Kids, Five Fingers are some of my favorites. His flow is unique and Blockhead somehow manages to create beats that mesh with it perfectly.

LOL. You're a good dude. I hope your situation is good.

How's this?

"Me too, bro."

He's awful.
People definitely have opinions about him. Depends what you're looking for, I guess. I'm no egghead - I love some simple bars. But Aesop deserves and earns his verbosity with thought, meaning, and flow.

So, in response, John McGlaughin says...

WRONG!

Somehow I missed this thread.  Top 10 MC for me.   Really enjoyed his latest album The Impossible Kid although less abstract than previous works.

A little under the radar for most causal fans but his collab with Homeboy Sandman shouldn't be missed.  Lice and Lice 2 have some great tracks.  Think it's available for free download as well.

He's been around a while, yeah? Feel like I downloaded some stuff... 10 years ago? Maybe redoing portishead tunes?

Yep, he's been doing his thing since the late 90s/early 2000s flop...that mashup you're talking about was called Rockhead by an NYC DJ/Producer JKingz.  Love that mix.  I don't think Aesop had anything to do with it except for the underlying vocals/acapella:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdveyUq1UNo

Also, "in 2016"? :oldunsure:

This made me laugh. More than the laugh emoji. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I was in my own bubble when I wrote this. This definitely had some influence behind it, fresh off a move to CA and loving the album Skelethon, which I still dig.

Dude I've never seen the video.

I truly believe he's the best living poet.
Patti Lee. Does her thing.

Have you listened to Spirit World Field Guide or Garbology yet? I was disappointed with both, TBH.

As far as greatest living poet, I'm not sure. He is in another class of emcees, though. He's excellent. I think Skelethon was really coloring my view of how good he actually was when I took this out back in 2016. The Impossible Kid is a pretty good album, but not as good as Skelethon. I often take him in the music drafts we do. That album still blows me away in its depth. He can go from overground batlle emcee with booming beats, like "Zero Dark Thirty," to really introspective folk/electronica with Kimya Dawson in "Crows I." And he effortlessly slides between those styles. Impressive.

But the title I gave this was really slobbering. He deserves a ton of recognition and is probably slept on and unheralded, but I'm not sure what exactly he's done to even remain a pop/crossover guy. He's really often atonal and difficult. His video game production now leaves a bit to be desired. When he catches a good beat, there's nobody like him, but he's become another Pharoahe Monch in that his selection of beats and his own curation and creation of them is killing his output, IMO.

Glad you dig him and dug the link.

ZZZ Top.

Runs the gamut from Lep Zep to Afrika Bamabaattaa to the Zeros, he just destroys this beat, which destroys on its own.
Dude I've never seen the video.

Haven't really put the effort into his new album yet, saw the videos and wasn't really as invested as I was for something like the video for Rings, which is amazing.  The lean into mysticism really isn't my deal.   But he has put out Klutz (language warning), which is just an all out assault.

I truly believe he's the best living poet.  His raps are on the good side of servicable and he does need someone to come in and inject some new life into his beats.  But where he shines is in the writing - and I'd like to point out the trifecta off Impossible Kid of "Get Out the Car" "Shrunk" and "Kirby."  One's a very real look at loss from years later, knowing that the rote excuses and current cycles aren't healthy until he gets out his car to a therapy session, where he spends his entire time fighting with the entire concept while admitting it's what he needs for help, eventually ending in what would just be a goofy song about a cat if not for lines like "it's an MD recommended sense of purpose" and "fifteen years of taking prescriptions now my shrinks like I donknow maybe get a kitten".

And neither of us have touched on Labor, which really should have been /the album/ of the early 2000s.
