AFC Championship - Patriots Hold Off Jags (1 Viewer)

I think the amount of salt in here has a lot to do with JAX being up 14-3 ....and then 20-10 very late in the game.

People here were giddy at the fact that NE was going down ... then the NE defense showed up ... and that Brady thing he does.

JAX provided folks with a tease

Would have been a lot less painful for them if NE was winning wire to wire instead of slowly pulling off the band-aid.

Did the NE defense really show up . . . or did the JAX play calling dissolve into rushes up the gut, predictable passes, and a phase shift from trying to win to hoping not to lose?

Good point.

The NE game plan seemed to be selling out to stop the run (Fornett). JAX insisted on running anyway. Trying to protect Bortles? Not sure why, he was tearing it up.

The play action and passes to RB's in the flat were gashing NE all day. Some of the NE defenders looked lost on some of those.

Isn't that part of BB's philosophy...whether it is a mistake by a player or a Coach (or a big play by his defense) the opposing team will find a way to screw-up which will keep points off the board...as painful as this D can be at times it usually does a pretty good job keeping points off the board which happened again on Sunday when Jax only put up 20...while it make not always look pretty the Pats have given up the least points in the league since week 5...

The play action passes were great playcalling by JAX to start the game.

1) Bortles was really good this year in play action (11 TD, 1 INT) and Bortlesque otherwise (13 TD, 12 INT).  He also had the highest rating in PA since week 13 of ANY QB (147.3) vs. 68.3 (26th/30) otherwise.

2) Jaguars seemed to figure Belichick would focus on containing Fournette and make Bortles beat them.  I wonder how much of that was Tom Coughlin playing chess with Belichick.

And then they shriveled up once they had the lead.

This.  I hate New England as much as the next guy, but Jacksonville has only themselves to blame for this.  Just brutal.
agree big time.  also think Bortles should have been running more in the 4th quarter.  It is what it is & Jacksonville played great for 3 quarters.  a Tom Brady hurry up offense is a sight to behold.

Pats definitely adjusted on defense, the amount of blitzes they dialed up in the second half was very unlike their typical approach.

Awesome read. Should cross-post in the superbowl thread.
I like watching people constantly complain about their unfair advantage.

The attention BB spends on every minute aspect of the game fascinates me.  When you think of how many close playoff games they have won, it's surprising more teams don't do the same.
