Been hearing it on local ESPN 1070 sports radio. No word on length or amount at this time, but talks to extend Ahman Green's contract have begun.

Good...just so long as they complete a deal after my Super Bowl - nothing like a potential extension to heal those nagging aches and pains. (Ahman Green owner here)

He has resembled A.Green from 3 years ago this season. If the Pack roll with a combo of Green and Morency, they are set imo.

He will turn 30 in the offseason (Feb. 16) and he will probably want big money, based on his season and career numbers. Maybe the Pack should let him and draft or sign a free agent as his replacement. It is a business.

He only needs to average 68 yards per game the last 8 games to became the Packers all time leading rusher. He is a definate for the Packers Hall of Fame.

Green will probably test the market

The Green Bay Packers have a little more than a week to get running back Ahman Green signed if they want to prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

At this point, Green seems interested in testing the market to see how much he's really worth even though his preference appears to be to remain with the Packers. To keep predators away from their leading rusher, the Packers are going to have to find common ground with him fairly soon.

One option that isn't in the cards is the use of a franchise or transition tag to keep Green off the market. It would cost the Packers a one-year offer of $6.9 million to use the franchise designation and $5.9 million to use the transition.

Teams have until Thursday to use either, but with Green having turned 30 Friday and the Packers unwilling to box themselves into a prescribed salary, the deadline will pass without Green Bay playing tag.

"We haven't even thought about that," said Green's agent, Joby Branion. "That's not been discussed."

Branion wouldn't say what Green is seeking, but after making $2 million in salary and $750,000 in incentives last year, the Packers' second-leading all-time rusher is seeking a major increase. Green was coming off a torn thigh tendon when he signed his one-year deal last season and would like to be compensated for posting a sixth career 1,000-yard rushing season.

The Packers probably aren't willing to up the ante such that Green is in the Deuce McAlister, Lamont Jordan, Domanick Davis $5 million- to $6 million-per-year range, but they're probably willing to match what others such as Corey Dillon, Reuben Droughns, Warrick Dunn and Willie Parker average (around $4 million).

SNIP-

"I talk with him almost on a daily basis," Branion said. "He indicated he's in the best shape of his life. He's hungry to get out there and compete. He's in tremendously positive spirits. He's excited about the future. He's excited that Brett (Favre) is coming back. He's optimistic about going forward.

"At the same time, he knows it's still a business. He might have to explore other opportunities. He'd be very happy staying in Green Bay, but he may have to address other possibilities."

The problem with the Packers letting Green test the market is that they don't know how other teams view him.

Would it be surprising if the Denver Broncos, who run the same running system the Packers do, make him their lead back? No. Would it be surprising if Green's old coach, Mike Sherman, convinces the Houston Texans to make a bid for him? Absolutely not.

Ahman Green, RB GB

News: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Packers RB Ahman Green is expected to head into free agency since he and the team cannot agree to terms on a new contract. Furthermore, the Packers aren't expected to use a franchise or transition tag on Green, suggesting that they won't commit big bucks to him even though he ran for over 1,000 yards for the sixth time in his career. In total, Green rushed 266 times for 1,059 yards and five touchdowns. He added 46 catches for 373 yards and another score while playing in 14 games.

Analysis: Green's solid season should result in a sizable contract for him, be it in Green Bay or elsewhere. At the start of the offseason, he admitted he'd like to stay with the Packers and coach Mike McCarthy said he'd like to have him back. However, he will be turning 30 in February and has nearly eight full seasons under his belt (he's a nine-year veteran but missed a chunk of 2005 and started his career as a backup). Green could be ripe for a breakdown, so be careful about taking him in drafts. If he returns as the Packers' starting RB, he'd be worth owning as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy choice. If he lands elsewhere, don't expect his value to be worth more than that.

Packers wise if they don't keep Green you gotta expect them to look at RB early in the draft. Fantasy wise, as a Morency owner, I hope they give him a chance to win the job if Green leaves. He looked decent in limited healthy action.

This is a big surprise to me. Add one more suitor to the jobs in NY. maybe Sherman wants him back (in HOU)...

Packers GM addresses Green negotiations

Indianapolis - Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson said today that talks are ongoing with running back Ahman Green, who can become an unrestricted free agent March 2. But when asked if he was optimistic the two sides could reach a deal, Thompson wouldn't go that far.

"I don't know if you're ever optimistic," Thompson said. "A deal gets done when a deal gets done. It's just a matter of a meeting of minds and all that sort of stuff. We're not there yet."

Thompson made his comments at the NFL Scouting Combine, which runs through Tuesday.

Green, who turned 30 on Feb. 16, sits in second-place on the Packers' all-time rushing list with 8,162 yards. He's just 46 yards away from breaking Jim Taylor's team record (8,207).

Green played in 14 games in 2006 and ran for 1,059 yards. That marked the sixth time in his seven years as a Packer that Green eclipsed the 1,000-yard barrier.

The group of potential free agent running backs is considered extremely weak. And if Green hits the market, the Packers run a great risk of losing him.

"We want him back and I think he'd like to be back," Thompson said. "He's a good Packer and he's sort of established as a Packer now. It'd be nice if he finished his career with us."

Ironically, running backs are one of the positional groups on display here today. And Thompson and his staff are closely studying several players who could someday replace Green.

Among those are California junior Marshawn Lynch, who many believe would be an ideal fit for Green Bay with the No. 16 overall pick.

"He's an awfully good football player," Green Bay running backs coach Edgar Bennett said of Lynch. "Explosive player. Tough. Runs with power. He can catch. He can do it all."

RB Kenny Irons/AUBIrons measured 5-11/203 and has received the most interest from the Green Bay Packers. He met with their staff for "20 to 25 minutes" Thursday night. Irons believes he'll run in the low 4.4s.

As a Packer and Big 10 fan, I don't get a chance, or seek out the opportunity, to watch much SEC football. I did watch (and just rewatch) the All State College football all-star thing they've been showing on ESPN. Irons looked pretty good I thought, fast, pretty good agility around the cones. He's not a natural pass catcher, but held his own in several pass catching drills they had. Besides that, I don't know much about Irons, but he was definitely a personality and very outgoing.

Bumping this for more discussion. I know he becomes a FA in two days. Any news about what is going on?
Acording to today's MJS, Ahman is asking for $5 Mil a year, and the Pack is offering "much less". I think Ahman is about to test the waters, and I would not be suprised if he gets a couple offers, but I'd be shocked if someone payed him the kind of money he's looking for.
