Al Davis (1 Viewer)

One of the most, if not the most important people in NFL history.
:goodposting: Certainly in my lifetime ... along with arch nemesis Pete Rozelle, they shaped the modern NFL we all know.RIP, Al .. love him or hate him, there is no denying his character made this league a lot less "vanilla" ...

Wow i thought he would live forever.

So .....bump up all raiders players, especially moore? I kid I kid

its sucks most people wont understand how much he has done for football and will only remember him for this past few years as a clueless owner.

Thanks Al RIP

have never been & will never be a Raiders fan, but he deserves props for all he accomplished back in the day

He did so much for football. To see how much he did for individual people just look at all the X Raiders and how much they loved him. Seems all the Raider HOFers pick him to introduce them. That tells me he had a profound impact on not only the NFL but the people in his organization. Hopefully you're right. Hopefully he is remembered for the good for all those years rather than the bad the past decade.RIP Mr. Davis.

RIP Al.

A lot of people gave him hell about how he ran his team down the stretch but all teams would be lucky to have an owner that cared as much as he did.

RIP AL

What a legacy.

Officially rooting for the Raiders now. I hope the new owner maintains the the Raider image...good for football.

Wow. The Raiders finally start to turn things around and Al dies. Of course, that begs the question as to whether his failing health kept him from interfering with the team and made them better. Wonder how this will ultimately impact the Raiders organization? Do they move back to L.A.? Who will run things now.

RIP, Al. You certainly made your mark.

RIP

i hope the ESPN folks dont dwell on recent past, just focus on the 70's and 80's so young adults can see he wasn't always like the last few years

As a lifetime Raider fan... this hurts. It is not unexpected as he visibly has not been in good health for a while.

Scout, Coach, General Manager, Owner and Commish- no single person has had as much of an influence on the league as Al.

Just win baby. Commitment to Excellence. You don't adjust, you just dominate. Once a Raider, always a Raider.

RIP.

I was always amused by the guy. I hope he put something in his will to posthumously flip off the league. That'd be fun. Like, maybe, when they read the will, he mandates dissolution of the team and sale of all assets, assigning all player rights to the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.

He took risks, some came off spectactularly, some in latter years didn't, but I loved the way he thought.Bill Belichick said recently
"He’s a great mind. It was unlike any other interview I’ve ever had with an owner because he was so in-depth, his interview was so in-depth really about football, about Xs and Os and strategy and use of personnel and acquisition of – all the things really that a coach would talk about, that’s really what he talked about. That made it pretty unique. ..."It was a great experience for me to have those couple days of conversations with him and also some other members of his organization relative, again, to the overall way of doing things."...."You look at the same thing today, there’s not a lot of difference. Like I said, he’s really run the defense and to a large extent the kicking game out there for the ‘60s, ‘70s, 80’s, 90’s – 40 years, maybe more than that, I don’t know," Belichick responded. "They have their style of play, they have their way of doing things. As much as you can say this is a copycat league and things like that, you can’t really say that about them because they’ve done the same thing now for decades defensively and to a certain extent, offensively."
The NFL lost one if its greatest founders and members

a legend. Crazy as a coot in the last decade, but a legend nonetheless. Honestly I think you do bump the raiders this week. They will play their hearts out for Uncle Al.

I am not sure why this is shocking because it looks like he has been held up by strings and sticks for the last 3 years. But seriously rest in peace to one of the true pioneers of the NFL. This man has literally done everything in the NFL and AFL including being a commissioner

RIP AL.

LHUCKS, I've been lurking for over a decade on these boards and thought your antics amusing, but 90% of the board is correct....you are an ###. Take your antics elsewhere and show some respect.

The Autumn wind is a Raider Pillaging just for fun. He'll knock you 'round and upside down. And laugh when he's conquered and won.

R.I.P. Al Davis

I don't think its shocking, but as an NFL fan Al was one those people you just assumed would always be there. He was part of the NFL and will be missed.

Perhaps I'm reading it wrong. Good for football, after saying he is now officially rooting for the Raiders sends a message that it is good for football that Al died. If I am misinterpreting it, then my bad, but I've read it multiple times and it sure seems this is what he means.

He's saying the Raider Image is good for football in caveman speak.

I've been a Raider fan since the "Heidi Bowl" in 1968, and I can't begin to say how saddened I am over the passing of Al Davis. Al was a true pioneer and innovator of the game. I've been harshly critical of his recent management of the team, but there is no denying the impact and legacy of the man.

If there was a Mount Rushmore of the NFL, Al Davis would be on it.

Weird way to say it. Very mixed messages with the first two parts of that section. Don't care at this point, just already tired of the "I'm a Raider fan now that Al is dead" crap and it's barely begun. No LHUCKS and all the others that say this, NO, NO YOU ARE NOT A RAIDER FAN.

Not to throw a stink bomb but I can't think of a public figure I despised more. He moved to L.A betraying Oakland fans after 16 straight years of sellouts. Moved back and gave no consideration to former season ticket holders -- just the right to buy PSLs with everyone else. How many coaches did he stiff for salary, how many business partners did he sue? I lost count.

R.I.P. Al~signed Bronos fan! I realize the Broncos might not even be a team if it wasn't for the likes of Al Davis. My deepest regards go out to Al's family and to all of Raider Nation!

How many NFL leagues did he have a HUGE roll in creating? How many strikes did he help the owners avoid? How many times did he break the color barrier in pro sports with his blindness in judging and giving a man a chance regardless of skin color? How many other owners lead the way to stave of the USFL in court? How many things does he not get credit for from most...waaaaay too many to count.BTW, the original PSL holders, which I am one of, got a great deal compared to ALL of the other teams in the NFL that have been doing PSL's. I am paying LESS ( a few dollars, but less) then I did 16 years ago for my seats. Al did that, after taking over ticket sales from Oakland/Alameda county a few years ago, Oakland/Alameda lead the PSL's your complaining about BTW.

You will be missed Big Al. It was that San Diego / Raider rivalry that got me watching NFL as a kid. Those were some of the best games ever. Fouts and the aerial attack on one side and the physical play of the Raiders. The Raiders almost always seemed to get the best of my Chargers whether it would be a key interception, a punt return TD or something. They just always found a way.

Some people seem to forget how dominate the Raiders were during those years. They did things differently under Al, but there is no arguing his early success. RIP Al Davis. Your uniqueness will be greatly missed.
