One of the most, if not the most important people in NFL history.
He did so much for football. To see how much he did for individual people just look at all the X Raiders and how much they loved him. Seems all the Raider HOFers pick him to introduce them. That tells me he had a profound impact on not only the NFL but the people in his organization. Hopefully you're right. Hopefully he is remembered for the good for all those years rather than the bad the past decade.RIP Mr. Davis.Wow i thought he would live forever. So .....bump up all raiders players, especially moore? I kid I kidits sucks most people wont understand how much he has done for football and will only remember him for this past few years as a clueless owner. Thanks Al RIP![]()
He took risks, some came off spectactularly, some in latter years didn't, but I loved the way he thought.Bill Belichick said recentlyRIPi hope the ESPN folks dont dwell on recent past, just focus on the 70's and 80's so young adults can see he wasn't always like the last few years
The NFL lost one if its greatest founders and members"He’s a great mind. It was unlike any other interview I’ve ever had with an owner because he was so in-depth, his interview was so in-depth really about football, about Xs and Os and strategy and use of personnel and acquisition of – all the things really that a coach would talk about, that’s really what he talked about. That made it pretty unique. ..."It was a great experience for me to have those couple days of conversations with him and also some other members of his organization relative, again, to the overall way of doing things."...."You look at the same thing today, there’s not a lot of difference. Like I said, he’s really run the defense and to a large extent the kicking game out there for the ‘60s, ‘70s, 80’s, 90’s – 40 years, maybe more than that, I don’t know," Belichick responded. "They have their style of play, they have their way of doing things. As much as you can say this is a copycat league and things like that, you can’t really say that about them because they’ve done the same thing now for decades defensively and to a certain extent, offensively."
Scout, Coach, General Manager, Owner and Commish- no single person has had as much of an influence on the league as Al. Just win baby. Commitment to Excellence. You don't adjust, you just dominate. Once a Raider, always a Raider.
RIP AL
What a legacy.
Officially rooting for the Raiders now. I hope the new owner maintains the the Raider image...good for football.
I don't think its shocking, but as an NFL fan Al was one those people you just assumed would always be there. He was part of the NFL and will be missed.I am not sure why this is shocking because it looks like he has been held up by strings and sticks for the last 3 years. But seriously rest in peace to one of the true pioneers of the NFL. This man has literally done everything in the NFL and AFL including being a commissioner
Say what?RIP AL.
LHUCKS, I've been lurking for over a decade on these boards and thought your antics amusing, but 90% of the board is correct....you are an ###. Take your antics elsewhere and show some respect.

He's saying the Raider Image is good for football in caveman speak.Perhaps I'm reading it wrong. Good for football, after saying he is now officially rooting for the Raiders sends a message that it is good for football that Al died. If I am misinterpreting it, then my bad, but I've read it multiple times and it sure seems this is what he means.

I've been a Raider fan since the "Heidi Bowl" in 1968, and I can't begin to say how saddened I am over the passing of Al Davis. Al was a true pioneer and innovator of the game. I've been harshly critical of his recent management of the team, but there is no denying the impact and legacy of the man. If there was a Mount Rushmore of the NFL, Al Davis would be on it.
Not to throw a stink bomb but I can't think of a public figure I despised more. He moved to L.A betraying Oakland fans after 16 straight years of sellouts. Moved back and gave no consideration to former season ticket holders -- just the right to buy PSLs with everyone else. How many coaches did he stiff for salary, how many business partners did he sue? I lost count.
