AL Gold Glove award winners (1 Viewer)

I mentioned Jeter because I'm sure it'll get some comments on how bad he was and how it renders the award meaningless. He was a lot better this year, but I have a tough time believing he was better than every other SS even with the lack of errors.

Agreed that this was Jete's best year defensively that I can remember but that doesnt make him the best defensive SS in the AL. What about Bartlett?

Totally agree. Erick Aybar too.

Adam Jones did not deserve it this year. He wasn't even the best OF on his own team and he was hurt for a good portion of the year. Gutierrez was far and away the best defensive player based upon UZR +/- rankings(+43). Not just OF, all positions.

FYI, for the Jeter discussion, here are how the SS's ranked:

SS 2009

Player +/-

Jack Wilson +32

Brendan Ryan +24

Yunel Escobar +17

Marco Scutaro +16

Elvis Andrus +15

Cesar Izturis +14

Paul Janish +13

Troy Tulowitzki +11

Stephen Drew +10

Jason Bartlett +10

Brett Gardner +11

Jeter +5

Elvis got robbed.
Andrus made 22 errors, which isn't a direct measure of fielding prowess but may have influenced the voters.I don't have any Gold Glove clauses in my contract so I don't worry about who wins them. They're a combination of beauty pageant, class president elections and lifetime achievement awards. Jeter is the hands down winner by these criteria

You forgot offensive production. You know, because the best defense is a good offense.

Young won one (or more?) also and he's far worse than Jeter ever could hope to be.

I'll refrain from attacking the voracity of that statement and instead inquire if you're trying to bolster the validity of Jeter's gold gloves by furnishing an example of the voters being even more clueless.

The year when Rafael Palmeiro won the Gold Glove while playing 28 whole games at 1B completely shut the door on this award being worth anything more than getting paid due to contract clauses.

yeah, pretty much.
Glad we cleared that up. Jeter has at his best been a league average defender and never produced a year where he should be awarded as the best fielding SS in the AL. This year is no exception.
