Al Wilson (1 Viewer)

Jason Wood

Zoo York
I know Al Wilson had some injury issues that led to his departure from Denver, but I'm surprised he hasn't landed somewhere. Guy has been an absolute stud for a lot of year while playing hurt. Anyone know what's the story there? Is he not medically cleared? Has he decided to retire?

His neck is screwed up, and he hasn't been granted medical clearance. I doubt he will play this year or possibly ever again.

Denver said they'd like to have him back if he clears medical. The guy was not only a great player, but also a team leader. He is very missed. People were mad at the organization at first, but since NO OTHER TEAM took him, well, it's pretty clear the guy is done :D

He got an offer from the Giants and would have been a sweet addition but he didn't pass the physical. Apparently, from there he went doctor to doctor trying to get approved to play but no one would. I don't see how he could play again. Some doctors do work magic but.....

He's going to sit out for at least a season, possibly forever. It's a very sad loss, since Wilson was truly one of the classiest guys in the league, and one hell of a player, to boot.

The Giants couldn't sign him, anyway. Denver traded him to New York and they voided the trade because Wilson wasn't healthy. If they now signed him as a free agent, Denver would be free to file a grievance that they did not act in good faith and get a draft pick out of them again.

he's a free agent anyone can sign him including the Broncos. If anyone is wrong here, the Gmen should be all grumpy about the Broncos trying to unload damaged goods. I'm a little surprised that Goodell didn't call it unsportsmanlike or somesuch and levy a small fine against em'. Maybe they'll trade TD next

The Broncos didn't know the full extent of his injury before they traded him. Iirc, he had been given a physical by a 3rd-party doctor several weeks earlier and cleared, but the Giants' physical was just more thorough and uncovered additional damage. Also, yes, he's a free agent, but if the Giants signed him Denver would definitely file a grievance, and they would probably win. The Giants voided the trade because they said that Wilson was too injured to make their team. If Wilson suddenly made their team, then that would prove them to be liars. Their entire reason for voiding the trade would be nullified.

yeah right! who do you think he was playing for when he was hurt? carried off the field on a stretcher?Do I need to link to him getting examined by a "Broncos doctor"? Do you really think the Broncos would pay him several mil if he were unhealthy? They released him in April after the Giants didn't fall for their damaged goods scheme. If they wanted to be compensated they have to retain a player's rights and with that comes paying him. They didn't want to.Any released player is a free agent, free to sign wherever he wants. If Al got some fancy shmancy neck surgery and the Giants wanted to pay him to be on IR so he's on their team in 08, they could without compensating the Broncos. Feel free to link me to an article stating that teams get compensated for released players

He was playing for the Broncos when he got hurt. He was playing for the Broncos when he got carried off the field on a stretcher. He also PLAYED ADDITIONAL GAMES AFTER THE INJURY. Do you honestly think the Broncos would have continued to play him if they realized he wasn't healthy enough to play?As for a link... ask and you shall receive. Scroll waaaaaay down to the bottom of the page and note the following passage:

There are some rumblings that the Giants would be interested in Wilson. But they would have a hard time explaining that to the league, having already flunked Wilson on a physical.

To sign him later, at a lower price after potentially medically clearing him, would be hard to explain to the league and could result in potential punishment for any team that did it.
