Today he had 11/22-233-1-0, last week 23-40-288-1-0

I understad neither the Cards nor the Rams have strong defences, but those are two very solid outings in consecutive games for a second year QB who only played the second half of the season last year. His TD to Bryant was a beauty today - he adjusted in the pocket to give himself an extra second and then threw an absolute laser that was right on the money. There was another play in the second half today where he was flushed out of the pocket and could have dumped off to Gore for a minimal gain, but instead he took some time and found a receiver on the sidelines for a first down. In 4 seasons I have never once seen David Carr do the same. Today's performance was with a couple key members of the offensive line out.

Last year he looked so bad I thought that Frisco had really blundered in not taking whatever they could to move down and grab someone else. I'm shocked by what I've seen out of him so far, and let's not forget he is only 22 years old - anyone else thinking the 49ers have found a solid QB for years to come?

Absolutely.He will only improve.

Who would have thought in August that my start of Alex Smith at my flex position over Lamont Jordan* in Week 2 was the right move and would actually work out? I liked what I saw from Smith in the pre-season and think he actually has some decent weapons around him and will only get better, especially as Vernon Davis improves since TE, like QB, usually produces very little in year 1.

* Note that as well as Smith has played, that is probably more of an indictment of how bad Jordan has been. I knew I should have gone WR-WR in the 1st two rounds (keeper league so many studs gone).

I want to chime in with my apologies for stating that Smith would never be a starting quality QB.

I was apparently quite wrong.

Let's consider this - how many first round guys bust because of bad coaching?

Case in point: David Carr. He'll have a tough time amounting to much since he was coached so terribly his first years in the league. Now he's, from a football sense, menally stunted.

It is really foolish to dismiss a guy with a lot of talent (first round picks almost always have this tho it's of course no guarantee for success) after one year, esp at QB. I had no idea how he'd pan out but didn't get all the people doing so.

I also was smart enough to quickly grab him off the FA wire. :)

The kid graduated from Utah in 2 years so he is obviously smart. Get some weapons and coaching around him and he will be fine. He has a strong enough arm to make the throws, all he has to do is make good decisions and that will come.

I would say coaching is the biggest factor in whether a QB will make it in the pros.

Jaworski broke down his broken down mechanics after one throw Monday night.

Seems like a lot of sophomore slumps going on in the NFL.

Thank goodness I didn't keep him. He showed some nice signs last year without Vernon Davis for most of the year and without Darrell Jackson, but since my league rules state that you have to draft your starter/immediate backups before you can take anyone else, keeping him meant taking a defense in the 3rd instead of a backup QB to Brady. I didn't keep Smith and drafted Romo in the 3rd and he has been my starter at my flex spot all year. Also, thanks to my buddy who kept Leinart instead of Romo otherwise I might have taken Leinart instead in the 3rd. :)

ETA: Not that it matters, but Alex thanked me again on Monday night by playing so well against my Seattle defense. I  Alex Smith and his lack of skills.

Ailing Smith Misses Practice

(11-14) 13:25 PST Santa Clara -- Lingering soreness in his right shoulder and forearm forced the 49ers to rest quarterback Alex Smith in practice today. He is expected to practice Thursday and play Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

For the first time since separating his shoulder Sept. 30 against Seattle, Smith admitted that pain in his shoulder and forearm are negatively impacting his throwing mechanics and accuracy.

"I thought I could play through it and help the team get back on track," Smith said Wednesday. "Definitely, Monday night I did not feel good throwing."

As a result, Smith said he will again consult with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and may visit him at his practice in Birmingham, Ala.

Smith said the forearm soreness developed as a reaction to throwing the ball as much as he did once he stopped wearing the sling on his arm.

"That's been the hardest thing, having two things wrong," he said. "That has really lingered. It has continued to stay there."

In recent weeks, coach Mike Nolan has said Smith's shoulder and forearm were not to blame for his poor play and inaccurate throws, when in fact they were. Smith was critical of the team misrepresenting his state of health.

"That's the frustrating thing, to be reported that you're 100 percent and that's not the case," he said. "Both have lingered, especially the forearm. It continues to stay there. It has not gone away."

Smith said the pain in his forearm affects his grip on the ball and thus his release. "The ball leaves your hand last. That's where your accuracy comes from. That's the frustrating part," he said.

"I made the decision to play through it with the intention it would continue to get better," Smith said. "It hasn't. That's been the frustrating part, the combination of both things. It has continued to linger."

Smith said he is to the point of wondering if he should continue to play through pain or if by doing so he is hurting the team.

"I have to sit down with the coaches and the doctors and see what's best," he said.

Rotoworld - 11-16-07

Alex Smith (shoulder, forearm) has been deemed healthy enough to back up Trent Dilfer in Week 11.

Smith ran the scout team Friday, so the results of Dr. James Andrews' checkup of his MRI apparently didn't reveal significant damage. Smith says that because of his forearm strain, he has trouble gripping the ball and make snap throws. It's uncertain whether he'll be able to start again this season.

=============================================

I would be surprised to see AS take the field again this season.

This cat is turning out to be a total bust.
