He seemed solid enough last season under Turner (58%, 6.5 YPA, 16 TD vs. 16 INT).

I knows Jaws pointed out the locked left leg for the 'high' throws but I went to bed at halftime. Does the offense play to Smith's strengths such as rolling out? I saw him do it a couple times but he had to throw it away due to a LB charging into his face.

Also he seemed to be on the Roethlisberger/Vince Young game manager path prior to finally throwing more this season (could it be that the offensive style isn't suited for him and the 49ers are trying to stick a circle into a square hole?). Prior to this season, Smith had thrown the ball more than 30 times in only 4 games and already has topped 30 attempts in 4 games this year.

You would think that the scouts would have been given the pink slip by now....
Jaws was about to go ape #### on Kornhole last night when he brough up the scouts last night. His opinion is the system is flawed, and based on th results - I would have to agree.

The Niners are just a horrible team. Even though theyve won a couple of games, I think theyre the worst team in the league. Smith is certainly part of it, and I never thought he'd live up to #1 overall expectations, but there are alot of other reasons this team stinks. Smith is just the posterboy smelling the worst.

Don't get me wrong, Alex Smith has looked completely awful, but so would any QB in his situation. He's got an O-Line that is like a jailbreak for defensive lineman. Was there any point in last night's game where you didn't see a lineman in Smith's face by the time he hit the 5th step in his drop? Seriously he was being hammered all night. And his WR's do him no favors. Arnez Drop the Ball Battle and Darrell Jackson are both less than desirable options in the passing game. The niners have two talented players on offense, Frank Gore and Vernon Davis and they don't find interesting ways to get either of them the ball in space. It's pathetic really. I actually feel bad for Alex Smith, he has no chance. I dont understand how teams don't realize building your offensive and defensive lines up are what win football games. The Niners line did a decent job last season, what happened?

If ASmith continues his regression, he will be out of the NFL very soon. What a bust of a #1 pick. The 9'ers did an awful job scouting this guy and are paying the price. No way was he #1 pick material. Too bad they did not pick the guy with the most talent in that draft- Braylon Edwards and then signed a guy like Brees to guide the offense.

The problems with the 9'ers start for the top. York is just a horrible owner and they will not be good as long as he (and his son) run the team.

Alex Smith threw for 1 TD and 11 INTs in his first year. He is completing under 50% of his passes and has 2 TDs in seven games this year. That is bad. Drew Brees never had a season even close to that bad.

I think a big thing about his horrible game last night was his right shoulder is all taped up from his injury still

Drafting QBs early is always a gamble. It is looking like Alex Smith and Vince Young are going to be busts. Smith just can`t play.

great post. re: the o-line, they actually played decently last year. at this point, though, they're just old. larry allen isn't scaring anyone anymore. i think staley will do well, but needs at least a few years to develop. if the 49ers can be smart about their salary cap, hopefully they can go out and grab a LT and a stud WR in free agency. i think york finally understands that he doesn't know jack about how to run a franchise, and nolan (imho) has done a good job given what he's had to work with.losing norv was a collasal mistake...but i'm not sure they could have afforded him in the face of a head coaching offer.

You must be a homer. I'm a 49ers fan myself but Nolan has not done a good job at all. All those people on the team that suck, are mostly there because of him. The fact that there is no backup qb capable of completing a pass is his fault. This team has given up on him and it's all down hill from here for Nolan. Minus Gore and a couple of others, there is hardly anyone on this team worth keeping. It's going to get worse next year as well because we still have no wr's, BY is probably going to retire no Jonas Jennings, no Larry Allen, still no NT, will be super thing at LB, not much talent in the secondary. This has been an extremely poorly run team in the last 5 years and the blame falls on nolan and co.As for smith, I think he's done as a 49er. Sure there are lots of excuses but over the last 3 years he really has looked as bad of a qb I've seen in a long time. He's been given plenty of time as well. He never has that big game where he just takes over. I don't know if a change of scenery will do it or not for him, but they may as well give him a chance. He's the new rick mirer.

Smith looked like he improved quite a bit last season and now has regressed. I also think Rivers and Leinart (before injury) regressed this year. I wonder if any of the 3 can start showing some improvement and can make it as a solid starting QB?

You will have Manny Lawson back, and that is a good thing. Lawson is very good.

Vince Young??? He may not be a great passer, but he's only halfway through his second season and the guy has >75% winning percentage. I don't think the Titans really care what kind of fantasy stats he's putting up.

Alex Smith is looking more like David Carr every game and that is not good.

If the 9'ers management does not help out Smith quickly, he will be tossed into the trash bin.

Immediate moves by Dr. York-

Fire that pathetic OC and spend some serious cash to get someone great.

Get a true #1 WR. DJackson is a stiff with hands of stone. The WR corp is one of the worst in the NFL.

Put Nolan on a short leash. This team is his creation and he needs to be accountable.

Find a solid backup QB to push Smith. If Smith does not look good early in 2008, pull him.

And most importantly, sell the team.

i think all of us that drafted Smith overlooked Norv's influence of turning mediocre QBs into average QBs. Alex has definitely regressed w/o having Norv as a QB coach and i'd say it's almost time to declare Smith a bust

Hardly. In fact few QBs this side of Ryan Leaf were this bad their first few seasons. Watching their O last night was like watching a car wreck (at least for me as I played vs SEA D). 'Course it's not all his fault either.

Isn't hindsight great? But I agree w/what you said above re the moves they should make.

Exactly

As a die hard (very hard lately) niners fan I think Smith will turn out to be a productive NFL QB someday. True, he never should have been a #1 overall pick, but sitting at the top of the draft in need of a QB what was SF supposed to do?

They tried to trade the pick but there just wasn't a true #1 guy out there and as such no one was willing to pay the price to move up. This was one of the weakest top 10's in a long time:

1 San Francisco Alex Smith - QB

2 Miami Ronnie Brown - RB

3 Cleveland Braylon Edwards - WR

4 Chicago Cedric Benson - RB

5 Tampa Bay Carnell Williams - RB

6 Tennessee Adam Jones - CB

7 Minnesota Troy Williamson - WR

8 Arizona Antrel Rolle - CB

9 Washington Carlos Rogers - CB

10 Detroit Mike Williams - WR

There are a number of factors working against Smith's development over his first 3 seasons:

Weak Offensive line play, no legitimate WR's to throw the ball to, having to learn a new offense every year (3 OC's in 3 years), huge extpectations to be the next Montana/ Young/ Garcia, poor defensive play (forces him into throwing situations).

Similar to David Carr, Smith is having to deal with too many factors outside of his control. I think the 49ers will figure it out before it's too late and they ruin a potentially good QB like the Texans did with Carr.

No O-line.

I'm a pseudo-homer (nyg fan, but live in the bay area). york had the team so ####ed up during the erickson debacle, i don't know that you can hang it all on nolan. - i agree with you on not putting in a competitive #2 QB.- i don't know who was responsible for letting turner leave (again, there may not have been enough buying power to keep him), but that has had a tremendous impact. - kwame is gone - good- barlow gone - good- jury is out on vernon- i like staley- i have a man crush on patrick willis- you think the lewis/clements combo is no good?ultimately, outside of smith, i think the 49ers have done an excellent job through the draft, and a good one through FA (darrell jackson was a joke, though).

I think during nolan's tenure his positive additions to the team have beenwillis - awesome but was also a very obvious pickmanny - he'll probably be good to greatclements - wwaaaaaay overpaid but is a solid cornerharris - has overperformed in my books but we didn't pay much for him but he's oldstaley - seems to have potentialsnyder - seems to have potentialjackson - actually i think he's a good reciever just in a vanilla offense and isn't really trying because everything aroudn him sucksnegative additionsleliegilmorevernon davis - i put him on here because i think his attitude will bring him down, plus he seems injury proneA. Smith - needs no explainationpretty everyone else on the defense minus those mentioned above...lewis is an overpaid, hard hitting, terrible coverage safetythat's not that good in three years with a bunch of top draft picks and an open pocket book in free agency lately. Banta cain was a terrible signing and a lot of people thought that guy stunk when we signed him...turned out it was true.Nolan has all the control. He comes from a ravens program that stunk offensively so i don't know why people thought he could turn us aroudn in that department.

I was just thinking about this today? Do you think the 9ers wish they would of taken Aaron Rogers with the #1 overall?

I was just thinking about this today? Do you think the 9ers wish they would of taken Aaron Rogers with the #1 overall?
at this point they probably aren't only because rogers would have probably been a bum in this system as well. they probably do wish they signed drew brees and drafted braylon edwards however...

It's an embarrassing product put out by the NFL. Maybe they should get a committee together and look into developing QB's. 2ndly, NFL personnel and scouts need to wake up and cross off running QB's from their draft boards.

The difference between Brady/Manning/Romo/Favre etc. and trash like Smith, McNair, Boller, Lemon, Jackson, Young, Garrard, etc. is sad. It really is pathetic that these jokers are starting.

The fact that Vinnie can come in at age 68, collect Social Security and out play some of these guys at the same time is ridiculous.

Average QB play is worse than it ever has been.

I need to chime in here on D Jax quickly. I was stoked when I heard we had signed him but after watching every 49ers game this season I have to say I'm hugely disappointed with his lack of effort. He really seems to be going through the motions out there. He doesn't work to get open, he doesn't attack the ball, he just seems unfocused and uninterested.

Last night was a great example. He returns to the town he spent 7 years in after being replaced by Branch as the #1 receiver and shows no effort or passion whatsoever. Look how T.O. performs everytime he goes back to Philly. You'd think D Jax would go in there on a mission to prove they made a mistake by letting him get away. He was thrown to 6 times and caught 1 pass for 4 yards.

I honestly don't think Smith is the reason for D Jax regression. Honestly, I think D Jax is part of the reason for Smith's regression this season.

I was listening to the radio this morning and Julian Peterson (ex Niner) said that he thought Alex Smith was still hurt. Apparently Alex was grimacing after every throw. I guess that could be a reason for his poor game, but at some point you need to stop giving the guy excuses. If you take away the 45 yard hail mary at the end of the first half, he only threw for 69 yards on the game. That's down right terrible.

The other thing that constantly disturbs me is that the guy has tunnel vision. He doesn't see the field well, he stares down his receiver and has a very slow deliberate delivery. Which makes it easy for the defense.

The blocking by the line, and blitz pickup by the backs was terrible. Too many times the linebackers were allowed to charge at Alex untouched. Everyone in the league now knows that Gore is an excellent north south runner, and defenses stuff the middle to block him. I don't think Gore tried to run outside at all last night.

I will say that the defense (Nolan's forte) has definitely improved. Clements and Lewis have been huge additions to the secondary. At linebacker, the combo of Willis and Lawson should be very good for many years to come. Douglas has been very good on the line.

It sucks that the Pats have the Niners first round pick, because it's most certainly going to be a high one, and Dennis Dixon would be a great pick.

I'm not sure I buy this. Vernon Davis is a monster and he caught one pass for four yards. It's not like D Jax was dropping balls left and right like when he was in Seattle; Alex Smith was throwing the ball all over the field. The o-line and playcalling certainly didn't help, but the guy's accuracy has just plummeted since his college days and he doesn't seem to have the poise or awareness necessary to be effective at the NFL level. He honestly seemed shellshocked out there, to the point where I actually felt sorry for him.

Well it looks like Alex Smith is going the way of

Tim Couch and Ryan Leaf.

The thumping sound you hear is Alex Smith

being dropped from dynasty rosters all across the nation.

WOWWhat is it about this board and inverted arguments?

What does 3 examples of no-quarteback-thing have to do with the no-receiver-thing?

Good QBs find a way to get it done with weak supporting casts.

Alex Smith is not a good QB.

There's always an off chance that the light will go on like it did with Brees, but I wouldn't hold my breath at this point. Trade this bum if you can get someone like Trent Edwards, Kevin Kolb, or Brady Quinn for him.

For some strange reason Alex Smith reminds me of David Carr. :lmao:
 ...and Trent Dilfer, and Akili Smith, and Joey Harrington, and Kyle Boller, and Aaron Rodgers.....Brutis, I think you were alluding to the common denominator here -- QB guru Jeff Tedford. Tedford grooms tremendous scouting combine freaks, and "system" QB's with gaudy passing stats, but QB's who are completely overwhelmed and in over their heads when they get into real NFL action (aside from maybe Dilfer and Boller, and the jury's still out on Rodgers, but I wouldn't hold my breath at AR becoming the savior of the Pack franchise). In other words, when the valedictorian of your career-long QB stable is Trent Dilfer (who, let's give the man credit, did win a SB but that was all defense and Jamal Lewis), why are you still considered a "guru"? If anyone should take a credibility hit after such a string of busts, mediocrity, and so-so results, it's Tedford.

Nice theory, except Alex Smith wasn't a Tedford QB. And Boller was only under Tedford for one year.
