PermalinkShaun Alexander update

Posted by Frank Hughes @ 06:04:43 pm

OK, here is the deal with Shaun Alexander. KJR's Softy Mahler is reporting that Alexander is about to be let go. We ran into Mike Holmgren in the parking lot of the practice facility as he was leaving, and he confirmed that he did speak with Shaun today at the facility. He did not disclose what was said. But he said unequivocably that Shaun is not being released immediately. He said he could not be released right now anyway because of his injury. He had surgery on his wrist and is currently wearing a cast. When asked if Alexander was going to be released at a later date, Holmgren deferred to Tim Ruskell (which to me says "guilty"). Holmgren said he also met with Mo Morris and had a good conversation with him.

Holmgren said he really likes the acquisitions of Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett, though he has to figure out exactly how he is going to use Duckett.

People will probably jump all over me for saying this but I think releasing SA would be a mistake. The guy is 30 years old and was coming back from a pretty serious injury last year. Granted, he looked terrible in the games I watched but I wouldn't give up on him yet, at least from a FF perspective. I could see him bouncing back in a major way, possibly with a new team, like Jamal Lewis did. Curtis Martin also comes to mind. We always want to open the door for the newest young RB sensation but some of these old guys can still play.

As a long time Shaun Alexander owner... I would just like to say THANK YOU to SA for being a fantasy stud over the years.

But he obviously doesnt want to play tackle football with any determination. He should retire - healthy and wealthy.

Cincinnati, he's from there and they could use him and Rudi in combo until one of the young guys proves they can sty healthy... or if not draft a new young Rb of the future.

Ive herd this from a few cincy homers, he's done and you have 4 rb's that stink already you dont need 1 more

Aside from Houston where do we see players like Mendenhall and Stewart going? I don't think Seattle drafts one, I think they like the Duckett goaline love (Stewart could do it which I think will prevent them from taking him) and Jones sharing carries.

With SA getting dumped another potential team takes SA making Mendenhall and Stewart fall further in the draft to teams with established RB's turning into a RBBC thing!

:) Replace SA owner with Seahawks fan, and it's the same sentiment. Especially the second half.

Jets?.. Thomas Jones really is not cutting it. It's almost like the guy gets paid to go 3 yards and fall.. he's the built lendale white.

you don't think the o-line has anything to do with that, do you? he averaged over 4ypc while with the bears.

Might not be a bad one year stop gap. I see them drafting a back as well.
I keep saying it, but I think the Jets or Eagles grab Ray Rice in the 2nd. I could easily see the loser getting SA (more likely Philly than the Jets though), as he may not be released prior to the draft if he is still injured.

30 posts and noone mentioned Chicago? I think he would be able to push Benson and compete for the starting job.

C. Martin come to mind? He was good with the Pats and the Jets. For guys coming back from injury and switching teams, G. Hearst comes to mind. Maybe Edge too.

I feel bad for the team that signs him. SA has had a lot to say in the local media over the last year. He thinks way to highly of himself. He was great, but his time is gone. He is 30 years old with +2000 carries on him. He doesn't break tackles and he is not elusive. So what is he ------> Old and worn down. Watching him run is painful. Especially when he sees a LB or DL and falls to the fetal position.

I don't think the EAgles will be using an early pick on RB. They are ok with Buck and Hunt backing up Westy. If something falls and they feel it is too good of a value to pass up (maybe 4th or later since they will have 2 4ths) they might be tempted but otherwise look for them to concentrate on the lines and secondary.

is SA going to be this year's Ahman Green?
He could be. It seemed he lost all motivation when he got the big contract. Maybe he gets the motivation back? I could see him going off this year in the right situation. Then I see the fire go back out....

I had a chat about Alexander with some of the other staff guys this past weekend and was surprised at how universally unloved this guy is right now. I said that I could easily see the Birds bringing him in for a look and most of the guys looked at me incredulously, asking "why bother?" I guess what it comes down to is a concern that Alexander isn't going to be willing to bust his butt to earn a spot as a backup elsewhere; he's going to want to sign and be handed the starting job. I"m not sure I agree with that sentiment, but I DO think he'll have a plethora of options should the 'hawks release him.

Who wants Shaun Alexander on their team?
If he's getting pushed aside for the likes of Julius I dont know where he could land to get a starting job. :goodposting:
A lot of it has to do with money and he's not getting pushed aside by JJ since they are almost certain to draft a RB early now.
:lmao: They signed Duckett and JJ to draft a RB early? They are tying up about 4-5mil per year in cap space with those two's contracts...

He's was the softest elite back I have ever seen. I have been saying for a few years, once his speed is gone, he's through.
I agree with you. SA was a fantasy stud for one year and good fantasy back for several. He was never a great NFL RB IMHO. I viewed him as rather fem for an NFL player. Too limited and unable to catch very well out of the backfield. Dude always showed up on Monday night, but I always passed on him in drafts.

If the money was right, I would like to see him help out Westy in Phily.
I actually think that would be one helluva backfield. Allow Westy to line up as a WR and keep SA back there to challenge the run..I think a lot of people are soured on him, due to his last year of injury hampered non-success. But a year removed, motivated and on a new team, possibly with better o-line, I think he could surprise a lot of people.

 He ranked:

4th in 2001
5th in 2002
6th in 2003
1st in 2004
1st in 2005Not only was he a stud for five consecutive years, his WORST season over that span was 1,400 yards and 16 TDs. The guy had 16 or more TDs in five straight seasons. He was a fantasy BEAST.

He also caught 145 passes from 2001 to 2003, he was an excellent receiver when used that way.

And last but certainly not least, the guy has 12 receiving TDs in his career. Care to guess how many other current RBs have that many? Westbrook, Dunn, Ahman Green and Tomlinson.

The Lions have Tatum Bell and an injured Kevin Jones in their backfield.

They also have Millen running the show. Millen probably sees Alexander as a stud still because, well....he's Matt Millen.

All I know is he won me back to back fantasy titles a few years back in my keeper league and fortunately, I let him go last season. I'll always remember him fondly. :goodposting:
