We'll have our usual discussion on the major stories of the week, but wanted to make this week's show interactive.

What's vexing you?

Is Merriman going to be a 3 down LB? If so, what is his value?

Rookie MLBs and their dynasty outlooks (would you compare Foster, Irving, Carter to C. Lofton?--Lofton came relatively cheap because he didnt have a 3 down role until year 2)

Is it too early to write off E. Brown?

Angerer talk has really cooled...seems like a huge sleeper to me, especially in dynasty. Thoughts?

What about the value (if any) of the Giants LBs? Goff in particular.

You guys are the best. Thanks.

EDIT: I assume you'll mention the Terrell Thomas injury!

The Indy LB situation. Angerer, Brackett, etc.

Sean Weatherspoon. Blew up quickly last year - got injured and then did nothing. Is he 100%? What's his long term outlook?

Young LBs and DL likely to enter onto the scene this year because of aging/underperforming starters that might slip just enough to get rookies/young guys into those starting roles.

- Goff 2 or 3 down LB ?

- Update on Detroit LB carousel

- Donald Butler shaky so far according to some posters on Chargers board

Who will be the CB playing opposite Finnegan at TEN?

Tulloch/Levy Situation

who has LB fantasy value on the Saints beyond Vilma?

What is Dekota Watson's role for TBB in 2011?

Thanks

I have a feeling these will be covered, but just in case:

Bills safeties.

Eagles linebackers.

Short and long term outlooks for

- Donald Butler

- Nick Barnett

- Bruce Carter

- Kevin Burnett

- Derrick Morgan

- Marcel Darius

- Glover Quin

I think people are missing the boat on Major Wright. He's been flying around the field this preseason and I don't have much faith in Chris Harris. There are points to be had in the Bears safeties. What does the panel think?

I'm in a dynasty league and was wondering how Sean Lee looks? Also do u think Jamar Chaney is worth holding onto with Matthews there now in the middle?

Who would u keep if you had to pick one? Sean Lee or Chaney?

Thanks!

My question would be about rookie safeties like Jaiquawn Jarrett, Jermale Hines, Keo, Prosinski, Searcy, Sands etc... Which one of this deeper dynasty Safety could break out first, or at all, this season.

I'm definitely in the Major Wright camp. I think he ends up top 10 DB this year...

The Giants LB and DE situation. With Umenyiora on or off the field what's the play with Pierre-Paul and Kiwanuka. Also, how much will Kiwanuka see the field as a LB.

If Laron Landry is out for 4-8 weeks of the regular season or longer, who is the better pickup? Horton or Doughty?

Sorry to take it off topic just for a second, but what does that little guy with the letter on a stick with the pulsating dot mean?I'm new to the forums so forgive my ignorance.

From the FAQ's in the Free-For-All Forum:

7. :blackdot:

If you post in a thread, the thread icon in the forum gets a "black dot" so its easier for you to find the threads you have posted in. It's also a convenient way to track a thread you want to follow.

BTW- welcome to the boards. You'll find the IDP boards to be the sanest.

Welcome to Footballguys. As the previous poster said, the "black dot" makes it easier to follow threads that you wish to follow, but there have been changes. The "black dot" is now a "white corner". If you look at the list of threads, the ones you have posted in have a white spot near the upper right hand corner, which makes it easier to follow threads. It used to be a black dot with the older message boards. So people will post that particular emoticon to follow a thread that they have not yet posted in.

I would love to hear some discussion on:

* Von Miller's upside especially in leagues that reward more points for big plays

* Patriots and Bills likely to stay in 4-3 or could it simply be a way to practice that in case they want to change it up during the regular season?

* Best sneaky adds at DT?

Talk to me about Jeremy Mincey....and convince me that I'm not nuts to think he could be a top 20 DE for this year. :)

That Jax offense is going to be BAD. I think Mincey's #s may spike some just due to the volume of plays he may be on the field for. That along with the fact that there are also times when he just looks undeniable on the pass rush....

Thoughts?

Recorded last night. I'll post a new thread when it's ready.

I'm hoping to respond to the (many) questions we weren't able to get to -- loving that the interest is so high -- some time in the next day or two. Might save a few until after the weekend's games to get the most up-to-date responses.

Stewart Bradley. Will he get an every down roll? Rotate with Lenon?
:goodposting: I'm really wanting to know on this one as well. Also, is Ahtyba Rubin still going to get the tackle opps like last season?

Jene I think a breakdown discussion of the top corners for those leagues that have a separate corner and safety would be great. Maybe a breakdown of the top 10 CBs?

Still waiting for Cecil to upload the file to the site. All episodes will be available both on iTunes and under the Podcast tab on our home page. Many of the questions above have been addressed in some form in the past two or three episodes; scroll down on the podcast page if you're interested in those.

my questions are all safety related. Zibikowski started preseason week 3 so is the play zibi or pollard? Atogwe has looked really good in the skins D, regardless the impact of Landry what can we expect productions similar to what he had with the rams? is there a better target between the houston safeties(manning/quin)?

Is that really true about Curry. I have looked, but could not find confirmation on that anywhere.

Before I get started on these -- and good grief, copying them into Word alone took up nearly 1000 words, so well done -- a (somewhat) quick aside.

We love doing this show and we're extremely appreciative that all of you take a half hour out of your day each week to listen. And the show will always be free. But please consider a FBG subscription if it's in your fantasy budget this year. Many of these questions have been addressed in our preseason features, especially John's EOTG features and my RTD updates.

I enjoy interacting with the Forum community (it's the best, most knowledgeable source of IDP information and trends anywhere on the internet) and the Twitterverse, but there are times that I can't get things out in all formats as soon as I'd like. Most everything I see ends up in the Forum or on the podcast or on Twitter, but everything I see ends up in the RTD subscriber feature, and usually with an extended thought or three.

I don't want that to come out the wrong way, just thought that it'd be a good time to note that there is added value in subscribing to get a look at everything we do.

Okay, here we go...

Is Pollard going to be an every down SS?
I think he beats out Zbikowski. If he does, I think they’d find a place for his aggressiveness on passing downs. It may not be a traditional safety role, but I’d expect him to play the large majority of snaps if/when he wins the job.
Is Merriman going to be a 3 down LB? If so, what is his value?
Let someone else fuss over Merriman. The guy had one good preseason game – and it wasn’t as impressive as it looked – then immediately was back in the training room. If he plays more than 12 games as an every-down player, it’ll be a huge upset. Deep roster, big play scoring system? LB5 maybe. Anything else and you’re passing a better option for a bigger headache.
What are the dynasty outlooks of the rookie MLBs, specifically would you compare Foster, Irving, Carter to C. Lofton?
I still think there’s LB2 potential for Irving, Foster, Carter and McCarthy. None have the talent Lofton had as an in-the-box run stuffer, but they could approach his year 2 breakout on the strength of opportunity. All four can reasonably be projected to every-down ILB roles on opening weekend 2012. I continue to believe that Irving and Carter have a higher ceiling than Foster, but it’s not a multi-tier difference.
Is it too early to write off E. Brown?
Pains me to admit, but no. He’s now failed to impress two coaching staffs that lean heavily toward a defensive philosophy at a position in which a projectable player will get every chance to assert himself. He fell behind Greg Hardy and then Eric Norwood, and didn’t look great in his chance with the ones last night v Cincinnati. Always a chance that the light will go on if he gets another opportunity due to injury, but he looks like a 300-500 snap player at best right now.
The Angerer talk has really cooled...seems like a huge sleeper to me, especially in dynasty. Thoughts?
The Angerer talk has cooled – and rightly so – in redraft leagues. It’s very apparent that the team isn’t ready to trust him in subpackages. And I think he’s been inconsistent against the run this preseason. But he should absolutely still be considered the next MLB in Indianapolis. When that happens, and 2012 is a reasonable expectation, he’ll be assured of an every-down role and he could easily be a top 15-20 fantasy linebacker.
What about the value (if any) of the Giants LBs, particularly Jonathan Goff? What’s the depth chart situation along the front seven with Kiwanuka back, Umenyiora injured, etc?
We addressed this in the show, but it’s probably worth summarizing. The Giants appear to be leaning toward a nickel subpackage with Kiwanuka at end and Tuck inside, with JPP rushing from the other end. I think JPP has shown enough now to expect that he takes the majority of rotational snaps over Umenyiora (when he recovers), at least 60-40 and maybe better. The Giants had Clint Sintim as the starting SLB before Kiwanuka signed and was cleared, but I think Kiwanuka plays every down.Goff is definitely a sleeper. I think he’ll have limited upside (doesn’t have sideline-to-sideline range, lots of athletic players on the edges of the defense and at safety), but he’s an every-down player now. Certainly matchup LB3 or better value there.
Sean Weatherspoon. Blew up quickly last year - got injured and then did nothing. Is he 100%? What's his long term outlook?
He didn’t get back in the nickel packages after returning from his injuries. He may not play in every subpackage this year, but he’ll play 90% of the downs. I highlighted Weatherspoon as a value LB4 target in the Perfect Draft feature. I think he can be a Lance Briggs/Chad Greenway LB2 type 4-3 OLB in the long term.

Wow thanks for all the great information Jene! Where would you put Greg Jones compared to the other rookie LBs? I haven't heard much about him since he was drafted.

Thanks.

Are there any young LBs and DL likely to enter onto the scene this year because of aging/underperforming starters that might slip just enough to get rookies/young guys into those starting roles?
Sean Lee, Nate Irving, Corey Wootton, Martez Wilson, Da’Quan Bowers come to mind as players who won’t start in Week 1, but could be before Week 8.
Anything new with the Detroit linebackers?
Nope. Still Levy/Tulloch/Durant. Still a mixture of each in the nickel. Still wouldn’t trust any of them as more than a LB4, unless you’re willing to bypass similarly strong options in the hopes that Tulloch plays 1000 snaps this year. We may find out more tomorrow night, but I think it’ll take an injury for a Detroit LB to have consistent LB3 or better value.
Any concerns with Donald Butler? Been shaky so far according to some posters on Chargers board
As I noted in the most recent RTD, he seems to be moving well but you can see the wheels turning a little too much. Somewhat reminiscent of McClain during the first half of 2010. He’s still in my LB3+ tier, and I think he’ll hold his starting job all year, but he isn’t (and really never was) a player you should be reaching for as more than a high upside LB4/LB5.
Who will be the CB playing opposite Finnegan at TEN?
Jim Wyatt (Titans beat reporter for the Tennessean) thinks it’ll be McCourty. But Verner is splitting reps and has been solid, too. I think you’ll see a rotation, with both playing plenty of snaps. Certainly wouldn’t expect one to take every snap as the CB2 this year. Buyer beware on any Titan anyway; their tackle opportunity and pass attempts faced were way, way above average last year.
What’s happening with the Saints’ OLB group?
There lots more about this in the RTD from earlier this week – which Joe Bryant just made available to non-subscribers on the mailing list this afternoon – but Jonathan Casillas still has the upper hand at WLB and Will Herring at SLB. Neither has been great unfortunately, but Martez Wilson (drowning in Gregg Williams’ playbook) and Scott Shanle haven’t asserted themselves either. I think Shanle could push Herring aside, but Casillas probably holds the WLB job and plays every down. I’d like to push him as a LB3 but he looks too much like Keith Rivers (missed assignments, missed tackles) to start driving that bandwagon yet.
What is Dekota Watson's role for TBB in 2011?
Special teams and first man off the bench if there’s an injury at any position.
Bills safeties?
I continue to see this questioned here and on Twitter and I’m not sure why. It’s been George Wilson and Jairus Byrd since the Bills turned in their playbooks last year. Bryan Scott is no threat and it’ll be at least one season until Da’Norris Searcy gives Wilson a run for the SS job. Wilson is a safe DB1.

Eagles linebackers?
General consensus was that Matthews played better last night. I think that’s accurate, though much of it had to do with the Browns’ offensive line. Of the four plays I saw Matthews make, two were blown blocks/assignments and one was a play in which he beat a stretch play to the sideline untouched. He’s out of the nickel packages now, which severely limits his upside. Chaney isn’t the type of all-around package to overcome the limitations of the SLB role, every-down or not. Keep an eye on Matthews’ development and role, but this situation is like that of Detroit – without the talent. Stay away unless you’re willing to assume some risk with your LB4/LB5 slot.
Short and long term outlooks for…
Nick Barnett >> LB2+ / unknown but likely same through 2012 seasonBruce Carter >> PUP / LB2+ - LB5Kevin Burnett >> LB4+ / LB4+Derrick Morgan >> DL3+ / DL2+ (dependent on rotation)Marcell Dareus >> DT2+ / hard to say until scheme settlesGlover Quin >> DB3+ / probably same in 2012
I'm in a dynasty league and was wondering how Sean Lee looks?
I think Lee has been extremely consistent every time he’s played. Compare him on film to guys like Pat Angerer or Donald Butler or Casey Matthews and I’d take Lee every time. This is a Barrett Ruud deal, though. Something has to give with the vets for him to get more than a handful of snaps a game. Dynasty leaguers should treat him the same as they’d have treated David Hawthorne, Stephen Tulloch, Rey Maualuga, etc over the past few years. Find a place for him if you’ve got the roster space and hold.
Stewart Bradley. Will he get an every down roll? Rotate with Lenon?
I let myself be swayed by the opinions of others, and got convinced that the signing of Bradley meant that the team had soured on Lenon. The film didn’t support that, the coaching comments didn’t support it either. I think there’s a rotation here, but Lenon is going to play. Expect Bradley to see subpackage time and get moved around the alignments based on how he matches up with the offensive personnel. I think Lenon will still have a handful of very strong weeks (he’s been in the nickel with Washington), but there’s going to be more inconsistency with him this year.
My question would be about rookie safeties like Jaiquawn Jarrett, Jermale Hines, Keo, Prosinski, Searcy, Sands etc... Which one of this deeper dynasty Safety could break out first, or at all, this season?
Hines is buried behind two good players at safety and OLB. Keo is now buried, too. Sands looks horrible. Searcy, as noted above, isn’t likely to push aside Wilson this year. That leaves Jarrett, who has an uphill climb to unseat Kurt Coleman, and Prosinski, who’s been unable to practice much in camp due to injury. Jarrett has the most upside, Prosinski arguably the easier road to a job.

If Laron Landry is out for 4-8 weeks of the regular season or longer, who is the better pickup? Horton or Doughty?
I don’t like the constellation of injuries with Landry, but I think he’ll be ready sooner than four weeks. Whether he can avoid another compensatory injury is the bigger question. The Redskins seemed to prioritize Horton, then re-signed Doughty. I expect that Horton would see more snaps than Doughty, but don’t think I’d count on either having fantasy relevance. Neither will come close to putting up Landry numbers as I expect that Washington would use an interchangeable system and put Atogwe in the box more often than he would’ve been with Landry.
Have you seen any drastic changes in the tackle score keeping thus far in the preseason?
I haven’t had the time to do any meaningful analysis unfortunately. But it’s on the top of my list for the first two games of the regular season. At a glance, the JAX stat crew seems more willing to record a shared tackle, the STL crew seems to have scrapped the shared tackle almost entirely. I’ll be tracking it closely in the early weeks of the RTD and I’m sure it’ll come up in the podcast.
Is Scandrick's deal a sign that he is gonna start soon? If so who loses their spot?
That was a nice contract for a guy the Cowboys would love to be a slot corner. Newman struggles to stay healthy, Jenkins struggles with consistency. I’d think Jenkins is most at risk, but if all three play to their scouting reports, Scandrick is the nickel corner.
What’s Von Miller's upside especially in leagues that reward more points for big plays
Teams are going to run at Miller and while I like his willingness to stick his helmet in there, he’s not going to rack up tackles at the point of attack and isn’t likely to get many pursuit opportunities. There’s a chance he’ll make 70-75 solos, but I think he’ll have to get double digit sacks to do it. He’s been impressive enough so far that such a projection isn’t unreasonable. If you’re scoring system is heavily big play oriented, he’s worth considering as a LB3.
Patriots and Bills likely to stay in 4-3 or could it simply be a way to practice that in case they want to change it up during the regular season?
You’ll see more 3-4 sets in the regular season than they’ve shown so far, but the second team is getting reps in the same 4-3 front. That’s an indication that the teams are serious about the hybrid front and incorporating lots of 4-3 in the base defense. I’d argue that both depth charts should read 4-3 as a default based on the preseason action.
Best sneaky adds at DT?
Sneaky? Geno Atkins and Henry Melton. Sleepy league? Antonio Garay and Gerald McCoy. Worth watching? Shaun Rogers.
Talk to me about Jeremy Mincey....and convince me that I'm not nuts to think he could be a top 20 DE for this year.
Fool’s errand to argue that 5-ish isn’t nuts. And, unfortunately, I think our love for Mincey needs to be reeled in a bit. He really impressed me last year and his preseason has been strong. But all indications are that the Jags want Matt Roth starting alongside Aaron Kampman. If that holds, Mincey is no better than the third best pass rusher and probably sees 40-50% of the snaps at best. He’s not dynamic enough to finish in the top 20 with that workload.
Also, is Ahtyba Rubin still going to get the tackle opps like last season?
He might. Last year was an aberration, but I like what I’ve seen of Phil Taylor. His upside is somewhat dependent on what you think of the Cleveland offense. If they move the ball, control some clock and keep games close, there’ll be many fewer run stuffing opportunities. I think Rubin is much closer to a 40-45 tackle player than 50-55.

This is coming in the tier series, hopefully by the end of the week. There are lots and lots of guys worth considering (Haden, Fletcher, Clements, Griffin, Powers, Joseph, Peterson, McCourty, Flowers, Williams) among the other usual low-level CB1 suspects. The only guys I feel comfortable giving a mid-CB1 floor to are Woodson, Finnegan, Winfield and Tillman.
Atogwe has looked really good in the skins D, regardless the impact of Landry what can we expect productions similar to what he had with the rams?
It’ll be very similar to his early career with STL if Landry is healthy. He’ll be highly dependent on big plays. If he can run up those nice FF and INT numbers, he’s a solid DB1. If not, he’s an inconsistent DB2/DB3.
is there a better target between the houston safeties(manning/quin)?
Phillips will use them interchangeably, so it’ll be close. Hard to say which one will play force against the run more often, but it’s probably smartest to expect a slight edge to the SS (Quin). And he’s looked good so far. I’d say both have DB2 upside, with Quin a more even game log.
Is that really true about Curry. I have looked, but could not find confirmation on that anywhere.
It’s what I’ve been told by Danny Kelly and the folks at the Field Gulls blog, who’ve noted the change in some practice reps this week. We thought it was worth mentioning but it came out sounding more certain than we should’ve. I think it makes sense and we’ll see how it plays out this weekend.

Best of luck to those drafting this weekend. I'll let the keyboard cool off for now, but we'll probably have plenty more to talk about after this weekend's games.

thanks jene for the input. I have been playing Fantasy Football for 10 years (been playing IDP for 6 years) and i practically stumbled into this webiste (idk how i never found it before this year). Its an amazing source of IDP information, and clearly the best i have found anywhere. I will be subscribing this year to enjoy the many other features of the website that i have not seen yet. If everything is as well thought out and researched as the posts in the forums and the podcats then clearly it will be worth every penny.Thank you and everyone at FootballsGuys for the amazing work!-Dogfysh076

Buuurn. :) Probably accurate, however.

That WOULD be completely Del Rio-esque, wouldn't it? How does this jagoff still have a gig again?(I assume it's because he's willing to work for what amount to minimum wage for a coach.) I have the Jags games foisted upon me most weeks, due to geography, and Mincey just makes plays. It may look ugly sometimes, but he gets results. Why take that off the field? *boggle*I'm still in the Mincey camp though. Not like Roth is anything fantastic, nor is Kampman exactly a pillar of durability....but thanks for the reality check, Doc.
