Am I Making Too Much Of This? (1 Viewer)

I am going to talk to him about it tomorrow at the Oaks. Right now, I am planning to say that we've been friends for a long time and that I don't feel good about how the hotel/points has been handled and I wouldn't feel good if I didn't say something. If he hadn't used our place in PC, I'd pay him $900 even though I think he's way overpricing the points--I can buy them for less from Starwood directly. But I think there needs to be some quid pro quo given that he stayed at our place in PC over Sundance.

I really wish he hadn't put me in this position.

So you're saying I can use the pad over new years. Thanks man. I'll leave a couple hundos on the counter for housekeeping. No need to give me the address, I'll just find the biggest house I can ski up to. I'm sure it's yours.

Yeah... the value of points when used for hotels tends be very low in my experience. I generally only use them for flights because I usually can get $0.02 - $0.025 per mile that way. Hotels usually don't give that good an exchange rate though.

just for jollies and to get my mind off other more pressing matters, I compared a night at Starwood Louisville Riverside a couple of weeks later... $199 for 1 king bed for one night. Using miles it would have been 29,817 for the same night.... less than $0.01 per mile, which is kind of sucky.

He's definitely making out on that $900 deal. Heck, if I could cash mine out for $0.03 per point, I'd take that all day long, too.

the chicken bone in the boot is a good move but seems like they went a little too far with some other stuff

Had a two minute conversation with him this am, and he agreed with my point of view. He was a complete gentleman and we decided to swap the Sundance weekend for the Derby hotel.

I'm you it all worked out and this matter is no longer eating you up on the inside.

But you're still going to take a dump in his travel bag, no?

I don't have Sheraton points so he booked two rooms on his account--each room was 30k points for the weekend.

This week, he texted me asking if I could bring $900 cash for the room. Obviously, I don't mind paying as they are his points etc but $900 seems like gouging to me. His point is that the hotel has raised their rates 50% since the last time we booked there.
That's about how much I value my Starwood points.

70k points gets you 5 nights at a Category 4 hotel (can stay in Lake Como at a Sheraton that costs 335 EUR a night) and 50k airline miles.

You can't buy more than 20k a year and it would cost you $1050.

A maximum of 20,000 Starpoints may be purchased or received as a gift into your account per calendar year.

How much do Starpoints cost? Is there tax?

Starpoints cost US $.035 per point.

I went to the site last week and they had a "special" for $0.025/point. In my experience, buying points directly from airlines, hotels etc is never a good deal special or not.

Exactly. Had a great time today and will do the same tomorrow.

Anyone who actually pays for the points should have their head examined. Anyone who pays $0.035?? I have something to sell them.

Immediate relationship-ender for me. Guy is a superdoosh hitting you up for the marked up $ value of freaking reward points, even without considering the favors you've done him.

Tell him nevermind, watch the horsies run around on TV and leave him stuck with the fake, magic points bill.
