The email app I prefer is Gmail — not just Gmail the email service, but Gmail the actual app that I use to access the email service. Since it's made by Google, it's not available in the Amazon App store, and it's not even installable by sideloading without jumping through a few other hoops first (if I remember correctly).

Some apps are available from the Google Play store, but are not available from the Amazon App store. I do not think the reverse is true. So depending on exactly which apps you want to use, you may find the Kindle Fire to be a bit limiting, or you may find that it doesn't matter because the stuff that's not easily available isn't stuff you'd want to use anyway.

I get it. Thanks for the help. Not an easy decision. We don't spend a ton on devices and our needs will be basic for the most part, but it's well past time we got a tablet for the kids at least. The $50.00 off may be enough to put me over.

I'm in for either the new Fire HD or the Fire HDX. I prefer the 7" screen for reading/handling.

HD has dual core processor 1.5 GHz, dual band wifi, no camera, 8 or 16 GB.

HDX has quad core processor 2.2 GHz, dual band/dual antenna wifi, camera, 16, 32 or 64 GB.

Fire HD 8 GB is $139, 16 GB is $169

Fire HDX 16 GB is $229, 32 GB is $269, 64 GB is $309

I don't think 8 GB is enough storage. Leaning towards the HDX 16 GB.

I wonder if Amazon will have a Black Friday deal on these, though.

Incidentally, slickdeals has a link for Kindle Fire HD 7" on eBay for $99.99 refurbished. Now last generation but a good deal if you trust refurbed tablets.

They offered to send a new 2nd Gen one for a $79 upgrade, but I'm leary even though they say the charging port issues are fixed for that one. They also offered a 16GB Fire HD for $129. An HDX would be full price and a $25 Amazon credit.

He only uses it for reading and playing Minecraft and Angry Birds.

bought kindle fire over xmas mostly for my son. i liked the idea of the FreePlay feature but i'm less thrilled by it. it's not especially robust or smooth for the kids books. maybe the videos will be more effective? have not tried games yet. my son is almost 4. any tips?

had a 1st gen with no problems and have a HDX now . The HDX is worlds ahead the original fire. Great display and much more responsive . The Silk browser is much better now although I side loaded Chrome & have been using that as my browser

I'm having difficulty downloaded kindle books to my kindle. In the past, all I had to do was buy a book and it would automatically download it. Now it just sits in a queue. Did Amazon alter their delivery system? Anyone have a similar issue which they resolved?

Just bought a free book yesterday from the Web site and later that night when I started up my Kindle it was there..

Maybe it defaulted to to a different device..

You should be able to log into your account on Amazon and click the "Manage your content and devices" and force the delivery of any book you bought down to the correct device.
