Amazon's Kindle Fire (1 Viewer)

I'm getting frustrated. Googling isn't helping me, but here's my question.

How do I get a .mobi e-book from my computer to my Fire via wifi? Email doesnt work and I dont have a micro-usb to transfer that way. :wall:
Dropbox would work, although it's a little effort to set up on the Kindle.Google Docs should also work (from within your Kindle's browser). I haven't tried it with a .mobi, but in theory that should be the easiest method.

Dropbox or Box will work.

Couldn't you also use the Amazon 'Cloud' Drive? Free 5 GB storage space.

The wife's Ipod touch has just about died. For basic e-mail and occasional web surfing on the couch, would you guys recommend the Fire or another Ipod Touch? They are essentially the same price. Which has better form function for typing?

Daughter has both.. She has been using the Kindle fire to write a short story so that might give you a hint ;)

Good info. thx. Are there any B&M stores that I can demo a Kindle Fire?

Does anyone have a link for a good kindle version of Edgar Allan Poe's complete works? It is kinda rough trying to decipher which book I want to buy.

I don't think you can upload random files to that but I'm not sure. Haven't tried it.

That's good to know. I wonder why everyone doesn't just do that instead of sideloading something like Dropbox to get non-compatible APKs.
I didn't know it could be used for non-Amazon purchases, either. In any case, I just tried to send an .epub file to it by email and it didn't work. Is there another way to get stuff into the cloud besides email?

I think that is more a function of .epub not being supported on Kindle? Try sending a .mobi version...looks like that would work, judging by the response you got.

Use a USB connection with a file manager app or something similar. You can see any file via a file manager. It's another couple clicks or so but it will be there.

Stupid question here...how do you recharge the Kindle without the Micro-USB? I didn't think that there was any other option?

He doesn't have the USB connector, or he would just transfer them that way.
I guess my response was a general one. The files are there but they just have to be located properly. As far as ePub goes though... Kindle won't support that.

It comes with a AC Adapter.. not a USB to Kindle cable. As a FYI ... The newer Blackberry USB adapters work as welll.. I have a Blackberry Torch for work and the USB cable that came with it works for the Kindle as well.

Well, we are officially a "Kindle Family" now..

I just ordered the Kindle Touch for my wife for books. We will now have two Kindle Fires, and a Kindle touch.

Wife was sold last night when we found out that we can check out Kindle books directly from our libraries web site..

What are people finding to be the effective battery life on these? If you were stuck on a long international flight and wanted to watch movies or play games through most of it, could you? Do you find the lack of camera or SD slot to be problems or are they easily overlooked?

Battery life is meh. Could be a lot better.Lack of camera or SD card slot not an issue at the moment. Keep in mind you still can hook up an external hard drive to it because it has a micro USB slot.

So in August I'm flying Philly to AZ to Hawaii. You would say that I should not expect the Fire to be in use for most of that flight without a battery dying...correct?

Probably. Depends on how you're using it, of course. If it's for book reading, it should do good. If you're constantly needing to update your Twitter or Facebook via wi-fi, expect less.

If you root I believe there are custom ROMs that improve the battery life a fair amount. I didn't notice any problems with it using the stock ROM as long as you don't leave a ton of apps running in the background.

So is everyone rooting or running stock? For 140 I may just dump the thought of an IPAD all together

I am in the same boat. Totally torn right now. Also wondering if the new Fire comes out before my trip and is that much better. I read one article before that said the "new" Fire is really the one they wanted to come out with to start, but had to get something on sale for the 2011 holiday season.

I've used it on domestic cross-country flights w/ wi-fi off and still have mad more than half battery left. If you can find an outlet during your layover, you should be OK.

I rooted a few days ago. I'm running a stock type ROM for the time being. Might switch to something better once they're a little more stable.I also installed OTA Rootkeeper so I can temporarily unroot to view Amazon Prime vids.

Eh, screw it. Just bought one. Figured for $140 I can always return it in the 30 day window if we don't like it. Can't really go wrong. So I think I'll need to start learning all about this rooting stuff and if it is worth it.

Rooting voids the warranty but there are way/guides to return it to out of the box condition after rooting if you need to return or sell it.

 Haven't found any reason to "root" it.Everything I need to get too use works perfectly on the Fire as it is without rooting it..

I guess I can post here or in the android apps.

I was able to install the Amazon Instant Video app on my droid razr and a couple tweaks have it working...

Except it works only on wi-fi :kicksrock:

I know that the website works. Good news though is I think I can dowloand to my phone and watch offline if I want

Can't you use a USB recharger with Batteries? Like this...

So what are the "Must Have" items in the Google Play/Android Market that are not available in the Amazon Market?
All the Google apps, for one: Gmail, Google Voice, Google Maps, Google Music, Picasa, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Reader . . .Of the other apps I use a lot, I don't remember which are available on Amazon, but a bunch aren't: Catch, Dolphin, Last Pass, Dropbox, Mobo Player . . .You don't need Google Play to get any of those, but it would make it easier.

I use G-Mail, Voice, maps and Music and the browser version works just fine for me.. On my Blackberry I had a few of the Apps loaded and still found myself going back to the browser to access them.

It's just personal preference. I don't know if there's anything "must have" it just depends on how you want to use it.You can sideload a lot of it or you can use the browser version like snogger mentioned. I just prefer to not have those restrictions and there's little downside to rooting even if your only slightly tech savvy like me.

Yeah, you can use all the Google services in the browser, but I like the interface with the apps better (especially Google Maps and Picasa), and I also like to get an icon in the notification bar when I get a new email or text or voicemail.

I use mine 95% of the time for reading and if I keep the brightness down it will last me 10-12 hours. My wife plays games on 90% of the time and he battery goes in three hours.

When my battery does go down I tether it to my laptop with the usb cable and it lasts a long, long time, no mater whether I am watching movies, playing games, or reading.

A number of people have talked about the rooting/ROM/sideloading/etc on this to get more apps and functionality. At this point I'd like to be able to just access Google Play without losing any current functionality. What is the minimum I need to do to get that result?

Also, the wife was trying to do GMail on the native Silk browser. Reading emails was easy, but once we hit "REPLY" we couldn't find out where to touch to open up the editor so we could actually type a response. Any help?

What are your favorite free apps and what do you use them for?

Is there a calendar app that will cause the unit to power up and do an audible alarm for events as a reminder?
