Amazon's Kindle Fire (1 Viewer)

I'll almost certainly buy this soon as I have $100 gift certificate to Amazon burning a hole in my pocket.

I have a number of books that were not purchased on Amazon. Is there a way I can store these on the Amazon cloud and have them show up in the carousel (the books are in .mobi format)?

How is it? Mine should be here in a couple of hours.I sold my iPad1 yesterday while the value was still decent. Since I'd been using the iPad a little less lately, I figured I might as well put some money in my pocket and give the Fire a whirl until iPad3 comes out.
Update: I want my iPad back. Besides watching boatloads of Wonder Years episodes on this thing via Prime, I'm just not feeling it.
If you bought this to replace an iPad then you made a mistake.. It is being sold as a iPad Alternative, but why would you think going from a 10" screen to a 7" screen with less Applications than the iPad has would be a good thing
:goodposting: We have an iPad 1 and our two Fires. Two totally different animals and its unfair to compare the Fire to an iPad

I have heard a lot of people that are unhappy with the Fire. One guy already took his back and is getting a Nook instead - said the Fire was just sluggish.

It was the first week or so, but they pushed an update down and I haven't seen any issues.. I've had a Game running, with music running in the background, and then paused the game, went to my e-mails and then browsed the web, then returned to the game without any issues.

Yes, hence my "I want my iPad back" statement. It's not the lack of applications that bother me. I mostly used the iPad for email checks, web browsing and twitter. Most apps. end up just being a waste of space and time IMO. The whole interface is just a little clumsy on the Fire. No physical volume button. The carousel zips by what you want to select nearly every time. The browser is crap. The default email system is just OK. The twitter app is so poorly reviewed that I ended up going with Seesmic. I know I could probably lookup some hacks to make it more likable, but why bother? I thought I could live with how heavy it is, but with all these other things considered, that fact just annoys me more now too.ETA: the screen size isn't a big deal. I think a 7" iPad would be kind of cool.

I read somewhere that you can now root the Kindle Fire. Have you tried that yet?

We do a lot of long drives and the kids want to get a Kindle Fire so they can download a movie or some comics before a long drive.

Can I rip DVD's on my computer and transfer them to the fire, or upload books I have on my laptop? Or does all content have to go through Amazon?

For people that are getting the free Amazon Prime content for their Fire's, are you also streaming it to your TV as well? What are you using? Boxee? Google TV? Apple TV? If I'm going to drop the $80 for Amazon Prime with this I want to get the most out of it.

The Fire seems faster to me. I have about 350 books loaded on them and the Fire seems more responsive both when going thru the titles and loading one up.

If you want to get your $80 worth of Prime, quit driving to the store and paying sales tax- have most everything delivered to your door in two days with Prime.

To all Fire users. i am getting one for my wife. What accessories do I need?

I was planning on just getting a case, do i need a light or another charger?
There are no "Must have" accessories as I've had mine since Launch and we didn't purchase any accessories. But I did add this to my Wish List and hoping my wife ordered it for me for Christmas
Is it $15 better than this one?
Getting great ratings  wasn't available when my deadline hit.. if she didn't order one fir me I'll probably look at this one.
If you get the case, I'm guessing you should still get the screen protectors to avoid smudges?

Most ratings of screen protectors are all over the board. We don't have one and so far no issues.

Because I use my finger all the time to navigate, I do get a lot of smudges, but they seem to wipe off ok.

Wife and I are going to Best Buy to check this out and if we like it, gonna pick it up for Christmas.

If all we want to do is stream some movies/TV shows, surf the net, and check email, this thing is pretty much awesome, right?

What about viewing recipes and such on like foodnetwork.com and allrecipes.com etc?

TIA.

If you plan to watch toe movies by yourself then yes pretty good for steaming the shows and movies they offer.. I've gone back and watched old Twilight Zone shows and others.. They stream very nicely with no issues. If you want to share with the family then I believe there are apps fro that but haven't looked into it.There is an app for allrecipes that you can get for free..

Thanks guys. Just found my wifes present.

Not sure she will like it as she has never said she wanted one but it looks cool

Was it out of stock? The only way you are not getting something by Christmas if you order this week is if it's out of stock (if it's sold by Amazon and not a 3rd party seller).

Amazon's Kindle Fire lets kids charge up a storm

On Wednesday 7 December 2011, 4:36 SGT

By Mitch Lipka

(Reuters) - Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet, one of the hottest gadgets this holiday season because of its low price, has some parents bristling over the simplicity at which children can order from the retail giant and the inability to stop them without crippling the device.

Another concern is over theft or losing the device, which can be then easily be accessed for purchases unless a user sets a password to lock the screen when it's not in use.

What happens is that when you order a Kindle Fire - which differs from the Kindle reader by allowing users to browse the web, play games, video and music - it comes with your Amazon account information preloaded, along with "1-Click" ordering. That means anyone who is holding that device can place an order, whether it's their account or not. No prompts come up to confirm the purchase or ask for a password.

So that means that the itchy fingers of toddlers can click way, including the 3-year-old daughter of Scenic Labs founder Jason Rosenfeld. He says his daughter was using the device and clicked on an image of a children's product that appeared on the screen because it was in his shopping history -- he had browsed the item while holiday shopping on his PC.

"She picked it up and got it running," Rosenfeld says. After seeing the order confirmation in his email, he was able to quickly cancel the purchase.

While the $199 Kindle Fire device has been embraced as a cheaper version of Apple's iPad ($499 and up), it's designed to streamline ordering an extensive array of goods sold by Amazon.com. So, the process is simplified. Competitor Barnes and Noble, which released its Nook Tablet ($249) without the same fanfare, requires users to confirm their purchases before they go through.

In an email in response to questions from Reuters about Kindle Fire, Amazon did not address concerns about the "1-Click" ordering, but says it has provided the ability for parents to limit what their kids buy when using applications downloaded for the devices.

"We do provide customers with parental controls for purchasing in-app items," Amazon's statement says. "We're also working on adding additional parental controls."

The company also says there's no issue with shipping the devices preregistered, even though there have been reports that devices have been removed from the clearly marked boxes and used to make purchases by unauthorized users.

"Customers tell us they love that Kindle Fire arrives registered to their account and ready to go," Amazon's statement says. "Those who prefer to have their Kindle Fire arrive unregistered can select 'gift' during the checkout."

An industry analyst says he doesn't expect the concerns to hurt sales, which are projected by research firm IHS iSuppli to be close to 4 million units by year's end (less than a quarter of Apple's tablet sales, but triple Barnes and Noble's).

Because Kindle Fire is one of the hottest products this holiday season, R. J. Hottovy, director of Global Consumer Equity Research for Morningstar, says he expects that consumers will look past the security issue.

"It will probably triumph over any concerns on that end," he says.

If complaints continue, Hottovy says, it shouldn't be difficult for Amazon to add the extra purchasing step you see on most devices.

"I would expect that Amazon will add that sort of functionality to the software over time, if it becomes a bigger issue," he says.

For now, though, the single-click purchasing requirement to make the Kindle Fire fully-functional remains. And that has some parents who either bought the tablets as holiday presents or already have them in their homes angry.

St. Louis area software engineer Lance Durham says he decided to get a couple of Kindle Fires to give as presents to his children. He was loading some games before wrapping them and realized he couldn't turn off the single-click ordering, which charges his credit card.

"There was no password or pin, nor any kind of confirmation - the purchase immediately went through," he says.

So Durham called Amazon and says he was told the ordering from Amazon could not be disabled, and the company suggested he "deregister" the device after every purchase. That, he says, caused the downloaded apps to stop working.

He returned the tablets.

Others suggest turning off the wireless, which would allow only the use of previously downloaded items, such as books and games. Some forums on Amazon are filled with user after user trying to come up with ways to beat the system with limited success, including turning off the "1-Click" option.

San Francisco-area software developer Subrata Majumder says he turned off "1-Click" and that did nothing.

"Kids can tap the '1-Click' button out of curiosity and contents are purchased immediately. My son taped the '1-Click button' a few times," he says.

As it did for Majumder, customers say Amazon has been refunding these errant purchases. But the inability to control his preschooler from making purchases, prompted him to return the device. "Can my 3 1/2 year old son take my credit card to a retail store and purchase goods?"

Gary Davis, director of consumer product marketing for web safety and protection firm McAfee, also warns parents they won't be able to use parental controls to restrict browsing as they can on other computers.

"Any device that has an unfiltered connection to the Internet is an unsafe environment for children," he says. "Parents need to be aware that the Fire is more than a standard e-reader, and take appropriate precautions when allowing children access to the device."

Kurt Roemer, chief security strategist for Citrix Systems, says parents and other users should understand what the Kindle Fire is and how it works before letting anyone use one.

"My advice is if you can't trust someone with a device that can place orders in a click and may have access to age-inappropriate content - don't hand it to them," he says.

Just FYI for everyone getting one for their kids to play with:

I checked over the weekend and parent controls to require a password for 1-click purchases though the application has been added.
More information on the "fix"
there's a new way to set parental controls on purchases by going into the settings for the Amazon store on your Kindle Fire itself.

To do this, on your Kindle Fire, go to the Amazon store, go to the Menu button, then the Settings button, and there should be a new feature called "Parental Controls" that will allow you to stop in-app purchases. As with our article a few days ago on permanently deleting apps, this is a brand new feature that is being rolled out. But it should allow you to restrict purchases and give you peace of mind when you give your Fire to your kids.

A few other tricks involve changing the 1-click purchase method to Gift Card and then changing it back when you want to make a purchase. We've also heard of people using an free app called ZDbox to lock down apps that make purchases by requiring a password. It might be worth experimenting with.

Edit: Brian on Google+ spotted a great new way to turn off 1-click for the Fire. Here's what do to:

1) Log in to Amazon.com.

2) Go to "Your Account"

3) Go to "1-Click Settings"

4) On the right side of the page, you'll find "Mobile 1-Click" and under that "Kindle Fire," and a button labeled "Turn Off 1-Click."
 BTW.... LOVE this quote from that site today:

From the New York Times, "The 7" Fire does a good job displaying sites optimized for smaller mobile devices, but stumbles when it tries to show pages for 10" mobile tablets. It's like squeezing a size-10 person into a size-7 suit."

To quote myself at age 13, "No duh."

As a guy who has everything hardlined, (Comp, all video game systems, cable) what does one need to run this? Wireless router etc.

Please explain it to me like I am a dummy.

Also, what accessories are a 'must"?

Buy a Wireless Access Point since you likely already have a route that's running all that other stuff. Plug it into your router, follow the setup directions. Wireless network. Wa La

Couple Questions:

If these come pre-loaded with your Amazon account info, how does that work with B&M purchases like at walmart? I ask because the GF's sister is looking at getting 2 for her kids for christmas and she greatly prefers purchasing via B&M than online. Would you simply log each of the tablets into an existing Amazon account when you first turn them on?

Also...

Forgive me if this has been covered (I'm sure it has) but do these have access to a decent selection of apps/games? Looking mainly for angry birds type stuff plus apps for facebook and stuff like that.

Thanks in advance.

easy Apps answer.. LOTS of Apps at the Amazon app store  When you first turn on the Fire, you log into the preloaded Amazon account that you bought it with and can order directly from Amazon..

But it has a full web browser so you can still go to walmart.com or any other store and order from their sites without interacting with Amazon.

SOrry... perhaps I wasn't clear.

If they opt to order these from Walmart vs Amazon, how does it preload your amazon.com account? Or does it come with it's own account? IF so, is that not inconvenient for thsoe who already have an account.

I get that if you buy it with an amazon.com account, it comes pre-registered to that account. That makes sense. Just seeing what happens if you buy it elsewhere.

Bought my at Staples, the set up wizard will set up Prime for you off of your exiting Amazon Account (if you have one) or will initiate one if you don't. Used the Prime membership to grab a $17 eBook for free.WiFi Analyzer is an awesome free app. Not only have I used it to find the strongest signal away from home, but also to gauge when it may be time to reset my router. The NetFlix App is awesome too and the picture quality is excellent. While basic, the TV Guide free app is slick.

Thanks for the info, I just ordered one as my wife's Christmas present. When you're checking out, they ask you if it's a gift. If you check that it is, you have the option of having it sent to you "Unregistered". Otherwise, they'll send it registered under the account you bought it with. I had no clue what to get her this year, so hopefully she'll dig it!

The Fire does come pre-linked to your Amazon account. I'm not sure how to change that. Yes, you can have multiple Fires (or other Kindle devices). Mine came as "Jobber's 2nd Kindle" in the configuration. I have a regular Kindle also.

Now to watch the video and decide if I'm ready to take the plunge for the Skinomi TechSkin.
I have a call in to the company on the one I ordered. The day it was delivered, temps were in the 20s and it sat in the mailbox for a few hours. I followed the direction to the letter and there was some serious clouding that did not go away. Only thing I could figure is that the adhesive froze (or otherwise congealed).

My coworkers and I are buying a Kindle for our boss. We aren't sure if we should get her the 3G Touch or the Fire. She travels a lot via plane and is in hotels often. I'm guessing that we should get the 3G Touch if we KNOW she is mostly going to read with it. If we aren't sure of that, is the Fire the way to go?

I know you can stream movies on it, but can you also store movies and watch them on a plane that doesn't have WiFi, for instance?

Talked to customer service. They've had several calls from areas with freezing temps. Turns out the cleaning solution is freezing and leaking. They are sending me another one, packaged differently to hopefully avoid the issue.

 it does have limited storage.. But you can store Music, video and books on it.

Timely post over at fireapps.blogspot.com:

Screen Protectors

Now to watch the video and decide if I'm ready to take the plunge for the Skinomi TechSkin.
I have a call in to the company on the one I ordered. The day it was delivered, temps were in the 20s and it sat in the mailbox for a few hours. I followed the direction to the letter and there was some serious clouding that did not go away. Only thing I could figure is that the adhesive froze (or otherwise congealed).
Talked to customer service. They've had several calls from areas with freezing temps. Turns out the cleaning solution is freezing and leaking. They are sending me another one, packaged differently to hopefully avoid the issue.
Keep us up to date! from reading on that one, it mentioned it doesn't leave residue behind.. I've read those claims before that turn out to be :bs:

Namely the 3M wall hangers that claim they won't remove the paint when you remove them..

have you removed yours? and if so are the claims correct?
