Asked by Senator John McCain what he thought it was about the "anti-immigration" Progress Party that appealed to Norwegian voters, Greek American businessman George Tsunis seemed unaware of the party's role in the ruling coalition."You get some fringe elements that have a microphone and spew their hatred," he said in the pre-appointment hearing. "And I will tell you Norway has been very quick to denounce them."

McCain interrupted him, pointing out that as part of the coalition, the party was hardly being denounced.

"I stand corrected," Tsunis said after a pause. "I would like to leave my answer at... it's a very, very open society and the overwhelming amount of Norwegians and the overwhelming amount of people in parliament don't feel the same way."

The blunder came after a faltering, incoherent performance from Tsunis, in which he made a reference to Norway's "president", apparently under the impression that the country is a republic rather than a constitutional monarchy.
The New York businessman and lawyer donated $50,000 to McCain in 2008 before switching parties and bundling nearly $1 million for the president in 2012.

This kind of ### annoys the hell out of me, but ambassadorships have served as political favors since...well, since ambassadorships have existed.

At least the important posts have historically gone to foreign service professionals...career diplomats The ambassador to Norway is about as important as the 4th undersecretary of the Postmaster General. Seriously, how bad can he #### things up?

Bundling by gathering contributions and submitting under one fund name. $20 million to a winning president.

Bundling by gathering contributions from one person and submitting under several different names. $20,000 to a losing Congresswoman.

Now who is buying greater influence?

By the way I agree with the law D'Souza is being prosecuted under.

Then how about you shut the f### up about it? It's an idiotic comparison that you only care about because the legal way helped Obama.

If you really care about it, you'd support public funding for all Federal elections.

If you're going to be an Ambassador in return for cash, why would you pick Norway? Why not somewhere a little warmer?

Hm, ok not much there. My position stands, I'm just talking about the disparity in what is prosecutable in this country.

I care about legal and illegal improper influence of elections on a qui pro quo level. I'm not for public funding because I think if a person wishes to support a candidate they should be able to do so.

I wonder if the fracker got any corporate donations in that $20 mill that got kicked back by the corporation(s) to the donors.

Oh I have my friend... in a past life.

20 mill from a fracker to a winning president all tied up with a red bow.

You think he just got the ambassadorship for that?

And wait, isn't there an entire thread on D'Souza and his idiocy? Why the f##k are you bringing it up here?
Because someone just bought an ambassadorship for 20 mill and that flies as kosher?
:lmao:

Like I said above, ambassadorships have been for sale since the day they invented ambassadorships.
And do you think a fracker got just an ambassadorship?
OK, I think a big money guy got something he wanted...what do you think happened?

My guess - an open line and maybe regulatory favors.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has granted the first-ever LNG export permit license to Dominion Resources, Inc. to export gas obtained from the controversial hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) process in the Marcellus Shale basin.

It’s the fourth ever export terminal approved by the DOE, with the three others along the Gulf Coast: Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG, Freeport LNG (50-percent owned by ConocoPhillips), and Lake Charles Exports, LLC.

...
http://shalemediagroup.com/obama-doe-issues-first-marcellus-shale-fracked-gas-export-permit/

And etc. ...

“Exporting LNG to foreign buyers will lock us into decades-long contracts, which in turn will lead to more drilling — and that means more fracking, more air and water pollution, and more climate-fueled weather disasters like record fires, droughts, and superstorms like last year’s Sandy … As we have shown, once environmental impacts are evaluated, it becomes clear that the additional fracking and gas production exports would induce is unacceptable.”

“Dominion” means “the act or fact of ruling,” and today in the Marcellus it equates to the “golden rule”: he who has the gold makes the rules, in which Marcellus-fracked gas will soon flow to the highest bidder on the global market.
20 mill sounds pretty cheap by the sound of it.

Almost sounds like they're gloating there.

clearly there's a quid pro quo expectation that ambassadorships can be bought. It's really disgusting IMO even if it's a pissant country...

Actually what he did was reimburse people for their contributions so he exceeded the personal contribution limit. He is an idiot.

NC, can we take the party hat off.

Yes, he's an idiot - but what do we say about all the thousands who do the same across the country, in local state and federal elections - they're not idiots because they're clever and they don't get caught? Take it out of this context and do some digging into local elections, far removed from the federal sphere, and you might be surprised by what you find in your own area.

My initial point was $20 million delivered all tied up with a bow to a winning president is a far more pernicious influence than $20,000 delivered to a badly losing US senate candidate. You'd think we could all agree on that.

I met the ambassador to the Czech Republic under W several times. Basically was a big GOP supporter/country clubber down here and got the appointment. He knew zero about the country. Think it's just part of campaign payback SOP. Better than promising and delivering legislation IMO.

First I have been talking about getting the money out of politics for a long time, both sides of the aisle. Secondly if D'Souza was giving to Democrats I'd be just as happy to call him an idiot and be glad for his hopeful jailing. This isn't about party for me. So glad to see more people catching up.

Secondly if D'Souza was giving to Democrats I'd be just as happy to call him an idiot and be glad for his hopeful jailing. This isn't about party for me. So glad to see more people catching up.
Ok then: Amen. - It's been an issue for me - locally - for a while as well.

:X
Bundling $20 million.

D'Souza bundled $20,000.

:excited:

Just sayin'.
Bundling is an actual thing.

D'Souza decided fraud was a better way to go.

You are invited on to the no gerrymandering bandwagon(regardless of which party makes out) if you'd like to join.

I think if I wanted to go Northern Europe and I paid for an ambassadorship I'd pick the Netherlands. That way you get Amsterdam in the deal.

I think you have to assume that he just didn't pony up enough money to get first pick. Netherlands and a bunch of the warm weather ones were probably gone by the time his draft spot got called.
