America's 20 Dirtiest cities: California dominates (1 Viewer)

20 dirtiest cities

Dirty, dirty, you know how I do..

The booby prize this year for Dirtiest City in America goes to Fresno, California. This Central Valley city suffers some of the worst air in the nation, and a water supply so degraded that the city used to tell pregnant women not to drink from the tap. Fresno epitomizes the environmental challenges of the Golden State. And it’s not alone. Plenty of its neighbors in central California like Modesto, Stockton and Bakersfield have it almost as bad. (Other California metro areas ranked among the 20 Dirtiest Cities include San Jose, Riverside and Los Angeles — but don’t worry, they have lots of company from towns in the Midwest and on the East Coast, too.)
Full list

Knew Stockton, Modesto, and Fresno would be on the list before even clicking. Was surprised to see San Jose, but I guess it makes sense. Thought LA would be higher.

Proximity to the ocean and off shore winds keeps most of LA air clean. You don't really see the smog until you head to the valley or go east towards down town

I did not like Riverside much. I do really like LA though, never been to the central part of the state prevalent in this review.

The middle of the state is sandwiched between 2 of the most naturally beautiful regions in the US (Sierra Mountains and Nor Cal).

16 out of 20 are in blue states.

So the lands of fruits and nuts also give us refuse and ruts.

Actually what these cities all have in common is their proximity to industrial farming, manufacturing and/or oil refining it seems to me.

17. Los Angeles, Calif. The 12.8 million people in the Los Angeles - Long Beach - Santa Ana metro area suffer from air that is 1st in ozone, 3rd in year-round particle pollution and 4th in short-term particle pollution. In this picture, workers collect garbage in Ballona Creek. Sperling Air Quality Index: 2 Sperling Water Quality Index: 58
Very convenient of Forbes to include Long Beach and Santa Ana (industrial areas) as part of Los Angeles. I checked my area (between Sherman Oaks and Beverly Hills) and it's in the low to moderate range in air quality.
