An alternative to fantasy football....? other sports etc. (1 Viewer)

Now that the season is coming to a close, what do any of you do as an alternative to NFL-based fantasy football??

A few friends of mine "jokingly" referred to the AFL/footy/aussie rules football as an outlet.

Upon further inspection and research, it looks like a great substitute, but admittedly my knowledge is pretty weak on the sport.

Most other major U.S. sports do not interest me much at all.

I have little desire to play fantasy golf, (though that season is approaching quickly) and I can't stand the thought of following baseball closely enough.

The NBA has a little appeal, but not only has that been underway for a bit now, I don't like it enough to warrant any of that either.

NASCAR is another I don't have any desire to get into.

Now hockey is one that I like the sound of, and I have a couple friends that swear by it, saying its a great game for fantasy.

Again, that season is well under way, and its far too late to get into the league I was invited into.

Football I guess will always be the king for that matter.

I have said for several years that we need a "secondary/lesser" league that runs in the offseason, say perhaps 12-16 weeks beginning in March.

NOTE- This would be an excellent way for developing players, a ton of undrafted talent, and regular guys off the street to work their way into the NFL.

This would also give us fantasy fans a way to "keep the fantasy $$$s coming in" , and to help tide us over until the NFL cranks up each year.

Any thoughts or alternatives are appreciated.

Fantasy Basketball is an excellent game for Rotisserie format. As is Fantasy Hockey, but Hockey is harder to keep up with. The only Head-to-Head alternative worth playing is Baseball.

Nothing. The NFL is the only sport I watch.

Edit: I play dynasty and there is no offseason.

Just gamble for real, imo. If you're playing off hunches anyway, you might as well gamble off specific hunches.

Hockey ongoing

Baseball next up

If you're degenerate enough to hanker for a spring football league (always a winning idea) that you'd wager money on for fantasy, you should give one of the other sports a shot. Find a relatively inexpensive league just to have some skin in the game and try it out. You might find you like it.

I play in a couple NFL playoffs leagues, just for fun.

After the Super Bowl, I follow the NBA more closely, but I don't play fantasy basketball.

I am starting a magical football league website next year. PM for details on where send the money. It will be secured by Western Union so you know the money will safely make it to me.

Phenomenal idea.

Thanks guys for the responses.

I doubt I will ever get much into anything else, as far as fantasy is concerned but you never know.

One thing last year I *DID* get into, is Aussie LFL football.

Now if you aren't familiar with this, you seriously need to check it out, and trust me sometimes the level of play is far better than you would think.

The eye candy is only a good portion of it. (though a big one) :)

I have tinkered with the idea of a dynasty league, but I don't have access to one here locally..... and I likely don't want to get into one of those leagues, with the vast majority of head-to-head players I know already.

I might sniff around here and try and find my way into a start up dynasty league somewhere.

Thanks for the ideas.

Hockey is fun and I've done a Premier League fantasy league at a local pub. I learned a lot about hockey and watched some games but it felt extremely random. If you can get into English soccer & watch it with some ex-pats somewhere that's really cool, but that's a pretty rare situation if you can find it.

I dunno - I know of at least three English-themed bars (pubs?) within about 30 miles of our house where the Premier League is on all the time, people bet on it, do soccer fantasy leagues, etc. Now, I'm in the second-largest metro area in the country, but I know of at least one place in Atlanta, another in Chicago, and several in Philadelphia that have the same atmosphere. I think they're around in most big cities. "Soccer bars."

If and when you start playing fantasy baseball the game of fantasy football will bore you. Been playing FBB for 6 years now and football is just an afterthought now. Love the Monday to Sunday games in baseball so you have action every day. One bad day does not kill you like it does in football. And you can overcome one huge game by an individual that is difficult to overcome in football.

There are definitely some better aspects to baseball, mostly the fact that one crappy day is usually followed by your whole team playing again the next day. But the injuries are often far harder to overcome than in football. All depends. I think they're both fun and refuse to stop playing fantasy baseball until I finally win an auction rotisserie keeper league, which I consider the hardest thing to do in fantasy sports, or maybe that's just because I've never done it. :oldunsure:

I'm just the opposite. I do both of them but find FBB to be so much more boring than FF.

Was going to write a very similar post about fantasy hockey. I'm not bored with FF at all, but I enjoy the drastic differences between FF and Fantasy Hockey.
