Was in a discussion tonight when the question came up that of all of the pitched balls in baseball that are made with full effort to batters, how often is a pitched ball hit with the bat? Foul balls, hits, tips and so on all count.

Also, of all of the pitched balls made with full effort to the batter, how often do they reach the catcher without getting touched by the bat? Called strikes, balls, dirt pitches, and so on.

Curious to know what others think as to how often a ball is hit. Do they keep these types of stats elsewhere on the net or no?

I think you can find your answer by using the raw actuals on Fangraphs.com. They have advanced batting statistics that list the number of balls and strikes for each batter. In the "Plate Discipline" section, they show the percentage of pitches swung at and the contact percentage for swings. It'll take some math to calculate exactly what you're looking for.

FWIW, an extreme contact hitter like Ichiro has a contact percentage around 90% compared to Mark Reynold's 60% figure. Marco Scutaro and Juan Pierre lead the ML last year with 94.8%.

That's not what he askedHe asked 'of balls pitched', not of balls swung at

Yeah, but he can find the other numbers (balls/strikes, total pitches, percentage swung on) on Fangraphs and do the math himself. It's a lot easier than making a poll with 20 items.

a) Contact Percentage times Swing Percentage

b) 1 - Swing Percentage

data can be found at fangraphs.com

Here are some stats for 2010.Total number of pitches: 709,441

Strikes (includes swings and called): 445,456

Balls: 263,985

Percentage of balls that were intentional: about 2% (approximately 5280 so 258,705 were thrown with full effort)

Breakdown of the Strikes: Looking 28%, Swing and miss 15%, Foul 27%, In play 30% = 100%

note: when a ball is hit in play it counts as a strike no matter where the pitch was, even if it was out of the strike zone

So if contact is made on 57% of all strikes (foul 27% + in play 30%) then if you ignore the "intentional" balls you'll have approx. 253,910 contacts out of 704,161 pitches or a contact percentage of 36.2%

A breakdown of the 455,531 pitches where there was no contact (709,441 pitches - 253,910 contacts).

Intentional Balls = 5280

called Balls = 258,705

called Strikes = 124,728

swing and miss = 66,818

These are some amazing numbers.
