Forgot to mention above that I did not count the negative VBD value for the "Skip A Pick" 3rd string QBs in the team VBD totals.

Now I'll comment on my team.

1.7 Larry Johnson. I thought this pick was a nobrainer. Last season, LJ was the #5 scorer with 340 fantasy points, with only LT and 3 QBs finishing higher. Good value, assuming he signs, and all signs currently point to that happening. Probably can't get much better value than this at 1.7.

2.10 Torry Holt. Considered TO, but I'm a N.C. State homer, which might have biased me. In retrospect, TO might have been a better choice, given playoff points.

3.7 Chris Cooley. Last year, the third biggest dropoff in the entire league at any position was from TE13 to TE14. I wanted to get two of the top 12 or so TEs. In order to do that, I figured I had to take one here and get another in the 4th round. Gates, Winslow, Heap, Gonzalez, and Shockey were all gone. I'm not confident in Crumpler, given the changes in Atlanta and his health issues. I know a lot of people are high on Vernon Davis, but Cooley was the #7 TE in this format last year and #4 in 2005, and I preferred to go with the proven guy. And I think there is potential for improvement for Cooley this year... the Redskins should get better QB play, and Saunders has said he plans to get Cooley more involved. So Cooley was my choice.

4.10 Ben Watson. L.J. Smith, Davis, Witten, and Crumpler all went since I took Cooley. I felt Ben Watson was the last guy who was reasonable to project as top 10, and was happy to get him. There were a number of QBs left, so I was inclined to wait on them. 23 RBs were gone... I thought about Thomas Jones, but thought Watson was clearly better value. 16 WRs were gone, with Burress possibly the best remaining... again, I thought Watson was clearly a better value. Likely playoff performer.

5.7 Tennessee Team QB. Atlanta scored big last year. Hoping for a similar season from Young. Last season, Tennessee was only the 17th best team QB, with 251 fantasy points. But in Young's last 8 games, he averaged 20.7 fantasy points per game... a full season pace of 331 fantasy points, which would have ranked as the 5th best team QB in this format last season. I realize scaling up isn't always valid... but as the 10th QB off the board, he seemed like a good value. Also, I know some disagree with this, but I did not want to get stuck with bad QBs, since QB is the top scoring position, and QB scoring can drop off steeply at the bottom... so I wanted to get my first QB early and put myself in position to take the second if a run started.

6.10 Chambers. I figure he'll be among the most targeted WRs in the league. Hoping Trent Green can help him rebound from last year. Got him as WR32, which seems like decent value, considering (1) he was WR8 in this format just two years ago; (2) Trent Green is an upgrade at QB this year; (3) he got 154 targets last year; and (4) McMichael and Welker are gone, so even if Ginn plays well he should still get huge targets. Also considered Jennings, Darrell Jackson, Berrian, and Holmes, but figured at least one would slide to me in the 7th. I also considered Fred Taylor here, but figured Chambers will outscore him in this format, so I took the points.

7.7 Santonio Holmes. Good value as the 38th WR taken. Good chance at playoff points here. Considered Lendale White, but I think Holmes will likely outscore him and again took the points.

8.10 Leon Washington. Good value as the 38th RB off the board. Possible playoff points here. Has been looking good this preseason, and Jones is dinged. If Jones were to underperform or miss a few games, he could break the top 30. I felt there was another minor RB dropoff coming and wanted to get another RB before it.

9.7 Baltimore team QB. 20th QB off the board. Pretty good value in that they finished 14th last year in this format, it is McNair's second year in the offense, with an entire offseason as a Raven, and Boller provides a capable backup. And in theory the offense will improve with McGahee... more passing TD opportunities? Also, this is a likely playoff team.

10.10 Jacksonville Defense. 8th defense off the board, and finished 8th last season. I think they have potential to improve. A key to my season last year was that I took 2 of the first 10 defenses, which gave me 2 shots for a big performance from defense, which can be a high scoring position. I wanted the same thing this time, and figured I'd go back to back defenses here. Of course, last year, I was lucky enough to get Baltimore... Passed on Miami, which some people rate highly. Good chance at playoff points here.

11.7 Denver Defense. 11th defense off the board, and finished only 14th last season. Again, I think they have potential to improve. Can't decide if I jumped the gun here... but the options at RB and WR were so unappealing I found it hard to pass on good defenses for them. Again, likely playoff points here.

12.10 Dwayne Bowe. One of the last starting WRs. 64th WR taken. I don't love the pick but I felt he was the BPA.

13.7 Shayne Graham. Amazingly, I got him as the 10th kicker taken. While he did finish #16 in this format last year, he was #4 in 2004 and #3 in 2005. I think he should rebound into the top 10, and he has a good chance at playoff points. I have to say, I was surprised to see 9 kickers gone midway through the 13th. I knew I did not want to end up picking in the bottom quarter or so of the kickers, because there will be some kickers there who may not win a job in preseason and/or may get replaced during the season... so I had to get a kicker rostered to be in position to take another, maybe in the 14th.

14.10 Bobby Engram. Had Josh Scobee queued up and he went with the pick before me. But Engram was very good value as the 72nd WR taken. It is true that he finished only 86th last season, but he missed several games. In the 8 games he played, he averaged just under 10 ppg, which is top 40 WR numbers, and that was with Jackson, Branch, and Hackett all playing well... Jackson is obviously gone now. In 2005, he finished 34th in this format; that may be misleading, since Seattle had a lot of WR injuries in 2005, but he obviously has potential, and has been playing with Hasselbeck and in this offense for a while. And, again, he is a likely playoff performer.

15.7 Nick Folk. Assuming he beats out Gramatica for the starting job, should be good value as the 23rd kicker taken, since Dallas should score a lot and is a likely playoff team. As far as I can tell, he is likely to win the job. It would definitely be a big blow to my team if he loses out or doesn't hold onto the job.

16.10 Noah Herron. At this point, all RBs remaining are long shots. With Morency missing preseason with an injury and Jackson not looking particularly impressive, I am optimistic that Herron will get some touches and points.

17.7 Antwan Randle El. Surprised to nab him here... he is currently the #2 WR for the Redskins. I know that is probably the 4th option in a Saunders offense, but he has reasonable potential for the 86th WR taken, especially considering that he'll likely throw in a few points rushing, and maybe even passing, in addition to receiving. I viewed this as a safe pick. Someone left will probably emerge as a top 40 WR, but I figured my odds of correctly picking him weren't great. I think my team is a contender and didn't feel I needed to swing for the fences.

18.10 Kenny Watson. With Irons injured and Perry possibly going on the PUP and having had past trouble staying healthy, I hoped that he could basically get Rudi's leftovers. Last year, Watson had 48 touches and the other Cincy backup RBs had 42... in 2005, there were 133 backup RB touches, and 112 of them went to one guy - Perry. I am hopeful that Watson can split the difference and get up in range of 70-100 touches. That might not be likely, but it is possible. Another possible playoff performer.

Per my previous post, DD shows my team around 60 points behind the leader, but that is with LJ projected at only 228 fantasy points. I expect him to sign soon, and his projection to rightfully jump up quite a bit. I finished 6th last year, and that was with Ronnie Brown in the first... I expect a much better performance from my first rounder this year. That difference alone would have put me in 2nd or 3rd place last year, and I think I did a better job in the later rounds this year... we'll see.

And I think my team is likely to have several players make the playoffs. Last season, my team had a total of 8 playoff games, with only 5 players making the playoffs. So I expect more playoff points this year.

The keys for my team now are LJ signing and Folk winning the Dallas K job. And, obviously, staying healthy.

A little late writing up my team but here goes.

Colts, Indianapolis IND TMQB

Patriots, New England NEP TMQB

In the first round with all the uncertainty at the time with LJ, and all the rest of the running backs tiered together, I chose to take the safe pick of Indy team qb, which finished 2nd overall last year to LT. I wasn’t planning to take another qb that soon, but after 3 other qbs were off the board and NE qb still there, I decide to take a different approach. NE finished as the 4th qb last year, and with there upgrades at WR they should do at least as well this year. I should have the best qb tandem in the league, especially considering that I used 2 of my first 3 picks on the position. Both should make deep runs in the playoffs.

Grade A+

Bush, Reggie NOS RB

Jones, Thomas NYJ RB

Morris, Sammy NEP RB

Peterson, Adrian CHI RB

I thought that having Reggie Bush drop to me at 2.12 was a steal, especially considering the PPR in this league, oh wait, never mind. But seriously, he should out perform his draft position as the 15th rb off the board. Last year he was the 13th ranked rb, and he should improve this year. Thomas Jones was one of the few non-RBBC rbs left and I felt he was good value at that point, but if his injury lingers or gets worse, that would be a crushing blow to my team. In the 10th and 12th rounds I took two rbs who could have a big upside if the “injury prone” rbs in front of them go down for any significant amount of time. Most have good playoff potential, with only Jones a possibility of missing the post season.

Grade C+

Jackson, Darrell SFO WR

Johnson, Bryant ARI WR

Jones, Brandon TEN WR

Jones, Jacoby HOU WR

Mason, Derrick BAL WR

Price, Peerless BUF WR

For not taking my first WR until the 6th round, I thought that I scraped through the bottom of the barrel to get some decent wrs. 5 of the 6 should be starting for there team and the other (Bryant Johnson) finished 48th last year. If he can do similar this year and the rest all stay health (D. Jackson) and start, I will score ok for where they were chosen. Only Mason look to be guaranteed of playoff games, although 2 or 3 of the others have an outside shot.

Grade D

I didn’t get in before the TE squeeze, and when I decide to get one before all the decent ones were gone, the best that was left was McMichael. Last year he finished 11th among TE’s, but he probably won’t have as many targets as last year. He has potential to finish in the top 10, but he could also slide down. Not to bad for the 13th TE taken in this TE crazy league. Utecht was the 20th TE last year and if he finishes the same this year I will be happy as he was the 32nd taken. Utecht should be in the playoffs, and McMichael has a decent chance.

Grade C-

McMichael, Randy STL TE

Utecht, Ben IND TE

I should have one of the best sets of K in the league. I wanted to get one good K before there was a run so I took Vinatieri in the 11th. Might have been a little early (2nd K off the board) but in the 13th I wanted to beat a run on K before all the sure things were gone. 10 K went off the board before I picked in the 14th. Indy should make the playoffs, and according to Kitna, Detroit will to.

Grade A-

Hanson, Jason DET PK

Vinatieri, Adam IND PK

I wanted to get one of the better D’s before they were gone and got NE in the 7th after CommuterMan got the 2 best at the 5/6 turn. After the top ten were gone, I decided to wait as last the gap between the 12th team and the 29th team was only 50 points last year. Patriots should go deep into the playoffs, Atlanta not much chance.

Grade B-

Falcons, Atlanta ATL Def

Patriots, New England NEP Def

If I catch a few breaks I should have a good shot to be at the top in the end.

It was fun drafting again this year. Most of the time I had several players pre-drafted only to see them go right before my slot. Good luck to all.

Now I'll comment on my team.
Decided to wait until after week 10, with all byes completed, to revisit my original views.
LJ is somewhat surpringly still the 15th best RB at this point, but we already know that he'll miss more time, and thus will drop... all in all, he will ultimately be a disappointment that hurt my team pretty badly. And it seems doubtful that KC will make the playoffs at this time, so playoff points aren't likely.
2.10 Torry Holt. Considered TO, but I'm a N.C. State homer, which might have biased me. In retrospect, TO might have been a better choice, given playoff points.
Obviously missed on this choice at this time. So far, I cost my team 34 points, but, more importantly, TO will get playoff points and Holt won't... so it's a bigger gap than that already. That said, Holt has still played reasonably well, especially considering the Rams' implosion.
And I think there is potential for improvement for Cooley this year... the Redskins should get better QB play, and Saunders has said he plans to get Cooley more involved. So Cooley was my choice.
Pretty good call here. Cooley is currently #7 in this format. But, again, it doesn't look like I'll be getting any playoff points here. Witten and Dallas Clark would clearly have been better calls (assuming Clark gets healthy).
Well, Watson is TE12 at this point, and hopefully is over his injury. Clearly, his team will make the playoffs. So not a bad call, all things considered. But I was wrong about Burress... though it's hard to say what other TE I would have ended up with if I took Burress here, so all in all I'm okay with this decision.
Big disappointment here. So far, the Titans team QB is ranked #28, and in general the gap is not close. But I hope for some improvement here in the final 7 games of the regular season, and the Titans are poised to make a strong push for the playoffs. So I'm hopeful they will end up better than where they stand right now.
I also considered Fred Taylor here, but figured Chambers will outscore him in this format, so I took the points.
Probably not a great pick, but it remains possible Chambers could see an improvement here if the Chargers offense gels in the second half of the season. And the Chargers should win their division and thus make the playoffs. Jury is out on this pick IMO.
7.7 Santonio Holmes. Good value as the 38th WR taken. Good chance at playoff points here. Considered Lendale White, but I think Holmes will likely outscore him and again took the points.
Outstanding pick here. Great value and could play multiple playoff games.
Total bust of a pick. No playoff points. I suppose he could still salvage some points if Jones were to get hurt somehow. Too bad we don't get points for kick returns...
Another disaster, since they are even worse than the Titans' QB, and again will not be making the playoffs. Terrible pick.Continued in the next post...

Currently tied for 12th. Not bad, but not great value. Should be a playoff team, though.
Another bad call. They have underperformed and are not likely to make the playoffs.
12.10 Dwayne Bowe. One of the last starting WRs. 64th WR taken. I don't love the pick but I felt he was the BPA.
Outstanding pick here. Only 23 WRs have outscored him.
Only 2 kickers have scored more points. Not bad value at this point. No playoff points here.
Great pick here, especially considering how close I was to taking Scobee... just shows how easy it is to miss this late in a large draft like this. Only 14 WRs have outscored him. He certainly has benefitted from injuries to Branch and Hackett, but he should still hold steady value going forward in this format, and Seattle will likely make the playoffs.
Great value pick here. Only 1 kicker has outscored him, and he should get playoff points... maybe a lot of playoff points.
16.10 Noah Herron. At this point, all RBs remaining are long shots. With Morency missing preseason with an injury and Jackson not looking particularly impressive, I am optimistic that Herron will get some touches and points.
Zero points for the season. Still, as noted originally, this was a long shot, and it didn't hurt too badly.
85.9 points in 9 games is excellent value here. Very good pick.
Great pick here - 86.8 points in the final round. Obviously, I did get lucky with Rudi's injury. No playoffs, though.

So after all that, I sit in third place, 118 points back but 82 points ahead of 4th place. Not a bad position to be in. I think I could have 6-7 playoff performers, hopefully I'll get more out of the playoffs than last season.Turns out LJ will be a key to my season after all. Had he come close to my expectations, I'd be challenging for first place right now. Looking back, so far it seems that my mid and late round picks provided better value than my early round picks. I certainly need to reconsider my philosophy on QBs and Defenses in this format next year... those were disaster picks all around for me, while I picked great WRs, TEs, and Ks. My RBs weren't great, but my philosophy was to accept low points at RB... if LJ was performing, my strategy would have worked despite the QB and Defense picks.
