Andruw Jones: HOF? (1 Viewer)

They are discussing it on the NYY-TEX broadcast. Seems like an interesting one.

He's one of 4 players ever with 10 Gold Gloves and 400 HRs (Willie Mays, Griffey Jr., and Mike Schmidt).

I'd vote no, but, he was awesome enough over a long enough period of time that he should probably get strong considerations. It's just the fall off after age 30 was so severe, it's gonna hurt his case.

I don't think most people are going to remember how awesome a defensive center fielder he was. He has the 2nd highest defensive WAR ever.

Maybe too much of a free swinger, struck out too much, but he could bop.

If he didnt have such a monumental collapse at age 31 he would have a shot. (steroids anyone?)
But that was the thing about the steroid guys is that they didn't drop off after 30. They kept going strong into their mid-late thirties. Plus Jones never seemed to put up the silly video game type numbers of the other juicers (hit over .277 once...drove in 100 runs five times...only twice over forty homers). He was a highly regarded prospect coming up, hit almost immediately (31-90-271 as a 21-year-old).Not saying it's impossible, just that he's nowhere near the top of my suspicious list.As far as HOF, he's gonna definitely come up short. His Dale Murphy-esque dropoff assured that much. Gonna finish with nice numbers, but too close to Darrell Evans/Dave Kingman territory to warrant serious consideration. I realize he's got the defensive pedigree and I personally would consider putting him in for that, but I value defense a lot more than the voters do.

I looked at Murphy's numbers last night.....he had a 10 year stretch where he was one of the games best players. Is 10 years not enough?

No im saying his dropoff coincided with the end of the steroid era. So I suspect he stopped taking them then. Plus he hit 50 hrs once. If that's not video game esque I don't know what is

He'll have to buy a ticket like everyone else to get into the HOF

.256 career batting average and under 2000 hits. Not seeing it. To get in with a BA that low, you've either got to be best defensively to ever play your position by a wide margin (Ozzie Smith) or hit an incredible number of home runs (Killebrew). Jones is up there defensively, but I don't think he was that much better than Jim Edmonds, who I think has a stronger case.

60.4 career WAR is better than a lot of Hall of Famers, but 40% of that comes from playing a key defensive position exceptionally well. That's pretty legitimate but doesn't get as much respect from voters as the traditional offensive numbers.

He'd be a much more serious candidate if he had maintained some kind of normal career arc but he collapsed before he left Atlanta. He's managed to prolong his career as a decent platoon player but he'll be lucky to stay on the HoF ballot for more than a few years.

He's had a good career and has made a lot of money doing it.

Yeah but fifty HR alone doesn't seem ridiculous to me. George Foster and Cecil Fielder both had 50-homer seasons likely without juice. This wasn't Brady Anderson or Greg Vaughn coming out of nowhere to pop 50, it was a guy who was widely regarded as one of the best talents in the game who regularly hit 30+ hr and then hit 50 and 40+ in his prime years. Doesn't seem outrageous to me.
