Andruw Jones: Most Overated CF in MLB History (1 Viewer)

According to Jayson Stark

I've been saying for years that Andruw is hugely overated. Everytime he's up to bat I tell my wife "I bet the bum will strike out." I won't even say his name. I just call him "the bum." I was pretty :wall: when the Braves didn't trade him after his almost-MVP season. I just hope that they're not stupid enough to overpay him when this season is over.

I disagree with the chapter. I don't think Jones qualifies as the most overrated, but he might qualify for the quickest defensive decline. At his peak he was everything the "ratings" said he was. So he doesn't get to all the balls he used to, why might that be? Because his defensive positioning is still the same as it ever was? Is that his fault or his coaches/managers? They tell him where to position himself - usually hitter by hitter...Ned Yost does it with the Brewers and has made Bill Hall a serviceable CF virtually overnight. By recognizing his shortcomings the first week of the season, Yost was able to "protect" him henceforth with positioning.

How did Andruw Jones pass the impassable Kirby Puckett as the most overrated CF in MLB history?
And here I thought it was just recent memory with Johnny Damon hording the spotlight as most overrated CFer. At least AJones and Puckett could throw out a guy a on hop. Damon's skipping rocks with weak ### arm. Grow out your hair. Look like JC. Hit 20 dongs. You are a God. That is, until you sign with the Yankees. Then you're the devil.

Mike and Mike were talking about the book the other morning and apparently Stark names Graig Nettles as the most overrated 3rd baseman ever. :goodposting: By whom?

I can confirm that any good play made in the NY suburbs in the 80's was usually followed by the word "NETTLES!!!". I don't know if that's overrating him, but its a fine tribute. This whole book is needless, where do I seriously rate Stark as the most overrated columist? He's a 9th rate Gammons.

I hope Stark's editors didn't see the HR that Jones robbed yesterday vs. the Phillies.

Was playing his normal shallow center. On a spring he completely caught up with it, jumped and with his elbow above the top of the wall, caught and robbed the HR.

Stark is on peyote.

This slump Andruw is in is terrible. 0 for 21 and counting. He has dipped to .199 BA and seems to have lost something in the box....possibly his vision. He is killing the Braves and my first ever FB team.

rant over.

I actually think its DiMaggio. Sure he was a great player, but so many people think he's top 5 or top 10. The streak and Marilyn made him a mythical figure. But he didn't play that long and his prime was interrupted by WWII.

His April stats: 88 AB, 5 HR, 19 RBI, .261 avg, .936 OPS, 19 BB, 26 Ks

His May stats: 99 AB, 3 HR, 17 RBI, .202 avg, .629 OPS, 11 BB, 29 Ks

His June stats: 79 AB, 3 HR, 6 RBI, .127 avg, .435 OPS, 4 BB, 18 Ks

He is an absolutely disaster this year....swinging at anything in the 404 area code and is about as productive as a castrated bull right now.

Someone should remind him he is a free agent after this season. At this rate, he'll be lucky if the Royals will offer him a contract.

good postHe has gone through a few of these 0 fors this year. But his home runs and rbi numbers make him tough to take out of the lineup. I just put him on the bench two days ago, Hart's tear has allowed me to sacrifice Aundrew's potential. I've also included him in a few unsuccessful trade offers. But I'm a little faded, have had a few drinks and am still getting used to the new board so i can't remember who the trades involved. I think it was something like Soriano for Jones and Oliver Perez.

One of the best defensive centerfielders of our era.

Who has been overrating Jones as an offensive player? He has never been a great offensive player, so not sure how you can overrate him.

Damn, another 0-fer night for Andruw.

I'll be the first to say that I was one of those people who shrugged it off at first. Andruw always was a second-half player and really didn't do most of his heavy hitting until July and August, where one would be hard pressed to find a more productive and complete CF. His K's were alway high in June and always high period. No reason to panic right?

But his stats are almost staggering in comparison to his past years- whereas June tended to be the springboard month into his most productive months, this month has been anything but that. On pace for career low hits, runs, obp, ba, ops, slugging- all of which crowned in this month. That cannot be a good sign. His BA usually peaked in June and the momentum he had in June carried over into subsequent months- this tells me that he simply started seeing the ball better in June and once he got comfortable, got into a groove. While K's were high in August, offensive production always peaked in July and August.

What I'm trying to get at here is that it may be much longer- perhaps too long before we see Andruw Jones back to form again. He's traditionally a slow starter but the fact that he hasnt hit that springboard month scares me. Expect more of the same from Andruw until he hits a respectable average for a stretch of time, and ultimately that may seriously dampen any playoff expectations for Atlanta.

1-29 IIRC. :goodposting:
