Anomalies or future starters? (1 Viewer)

I'm looking for insight on these players that had nice Week 1's, but whom aren't being discussed much:

Trent Cole DE PHI -- 2 T, 1 A, 2 sacks, 1 PD.

Cortland Finnegan S TEN -- 1 FF, 1 PD, 5 T, 1 A, and 1 sack.

Kevin Mathis S ATL -- 1 FF, 3 PD, 6 T.

Demetric Evans DE WAS -- 1 FF, 1 PD, 2 T, 1 sack.

Justin Miller CB NYJ -- 2 PD, 3 T, 2 A.

Jason Simmons S HOU -- 1 INT, 1 PD, 2 T, 1 A.

None are starters, some are DEEP on the FBG's depth chart, and none were mentioned in Culcasi fabulous IDP Perspective. If you've seen any of these guys, know why they're playing, how they're playing, or if you've got any insight, please share, we can't let these gems slip by. And of course, feel free to add any other notables from week 1.

I'll kick it off with Trent Cole, the only one I know about. Cole finished 2005 strong and picked up where he left off, however he's still listed behind Kearse and Howard and being used mostly as a situational pass rusher. He's fast off the edge, spots the ball quickly, and makes the play. With PHI looking strong on O, the opposition may be passing a lot, meaning we may see a lot of Cole. If Kearse or Howard are injured, Cole's value goes way up.

My league uses fairly standard scoring. Regardless of scoring though, those guys above obviously got lots of playing time and posted solid numbers, worthy of starting in my league and many others. It would be nice to learn why and to see if they're worthy of picking up.

Nope, no credit for return yardage in my league.

Miller was in a TC battle with barrett, but Barrett won. Miller got a lot of time in this game because Barrett was a little dinged up.... not sure which will start next week. Miller is the guy for dynasty leagues though...

The one guy that I missed and I don't know about is Finnegan in Tennessee. I was going to poke around here to see what anyone knew about him. Rookie 7th round pick from Samford, he was in the battle for the nickel-back role so that's likely where his numbers came from. Not sure about his long term potential. He was arrested for a DUI in late June. From his pro day: 5'10 188, "He ran the 40-yard dash with times of 4.35 seconds and 4.33 seconds while completing the short shuttle in 4.34 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.95 seconds. He had a 44-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-8 long jump. Finnegan also completed 14 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press."The Redskins had high hopes Demetric Evans this year as he was in line to push Renaldo Wynn out of a starting job before the Redskins signed Andre Carter. He just turned 27 and this is his 5th year in the league. Signed through 2008, with Phillip Daniels getting old, he could have some value.Rovers touched on Miller. Mathis and Simmons belong on waivers.I'm not sure that Trent Cole will ever be viewed as more than a pass-rush specialist in Philadelphia. But Derrick Burgess was the same way and we know how that turned out (both guys are in the 6'2 260 range)

Finnegan could bear watching but most of his production came on a single play where he was unblocked. He's behind a host of decent linebackers and alongside a better player in Chris Hope even if he sends Lamont Thompson to the bench. (ETA: Finnegan actually looks to have lined up more at slot corner than an extra zone coverage back. Despite Thompson's poor play, Finnegan probably isn't a threat)Miller has been discussed more than Thomas Davis if possible and really only has value in leagues with return yards.Cole is another player I'll be addressing in my column this week. He's a guy to have on your radar for sure. He got significant PT this week and has shown evidence of being a two way guy in the past. Since neither Howard nor Kearse are pillars of durability, Cole is a guy you may want to move on sooner than later.

How about Matt Mcoy 9 tackles and a forced fumble..

Wynn ended up inactive for last week with an ankle injury he obtained during preseason, so Evans was in line to see more PT than he normally would have. IIRC, though, Evans got banged up a little during the game himself and came out for a little while. As cracker mentioned, Daniels (and Wynn) isn't getting any older, and Wynn has had his share of bumps and bruises over the last year or so. Depending on if Wynn and Daniels can stay healthy, Evans has a shot at seeing a good bit of playing time.

Cole has been on my roster since last year, same with McCoy. I'm hoping Cole continues his current upward trend, I'll take a Burgess clone any day!

Picked up Finnegan and Evans in FA. The write-up on Finnegan sounds nice and everyone knows TEN could use some playmakers, and it sounds like Evans has a good opportunity. Also grabbed Ko before the Vincent IR news.

I decided I'm staying away from HOU DBs; I've got Glenn Earl too, what a chump.

I have the Charger Raider game on in my office right now (yes, I can do this). Tyler Brayton looks like he's going to generate a ton of stats this year. Just sayin'. Also, if you start DTs and are looking for help, Terdell Sands took four tackles away from the LBs in the first half. He's pretty active.

I found this nugget today on Finnegan - Linky to The Tennessean
McCardell to test Finnegan

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

While playing for Division I-AA Samford, Cortland Finnegan thought a crowd of 8,000 was hostile.

When the Titans rookie cornerback checked the surroundings in his first NFL game Sunday, he couldn't help but think of how far he'd come.

His fourth quarter sack of Jets quarterback Chad Pennington, which resulted in a fumble at the 1, was one of the biggest plays of the game.

"I appreciate where I am,'' Finnegan said. "But I know I still have a lot of work to do.''

The seventh-round pick gave himself a grade of C-minus for his first NFL start.

He also realized it won't be long before offenses begin testing him, and it could happen as soon as Sunday in San Diego.

As the nickel back — the fifth defensive back on the field — he is expected to get a lot of work against 15-year veteran receiver Keenan McCardell, who regularly lines up in the slot.

"That's why practice is so crucial and watching film is so crucial, because there's a lot of crafty slot receivers,'' Finnegan said. "There's going to be a time and place when that will happen, when they'll test me, and I just have to be ready for it."

Finnegan said film study of McCardell revealed he "does a lot of things you have to be ready for. I look at it as it's a positive for myself to be able to play against a guy like that in my first year.''
I suppose being the nickel back would improve his worth overall.
