Another school shooting (4 Viewers)

So is ryan lanza adams brother?
Who the hell knows. They can't seem to get anything right on first announcement.
:goodposting: trusting mainstream news :lmao:
Serious question. What are some examples of non-mainstream media that are reputable and know to tell the truth?
In situations like this go to the local tv news affiliate websites. Usually they have the best info because they have the most resources on the ground covering it.

Is it easy to get a bullet proof vest? Maybe we as a society should be rather inquisitive as to why people are purchasing these outside of law enforcement. This murderer was wearing one, I think the Colorado movie shooter had one and maybe the Oregon mall shooter? Forget the battle over gun control for a minute - would it make sense to start following the ball on the people who buy these? Is it normal for a 24 year old kid to buy a bullet proof vest?
Do you really think the lack of a vest would have stopped this from happening?
I don't think he's saying that, and IMO he's raising a good point. I don't understand why anybody would want to buy a bulletproof vest for anything other than nefarious reasons. I completely understand people who enjoy shooting, but I'm drawing a blank on legitimate uses for body armor.
fearful of your life? Afraid someone will try to shoot you - ex-spouse, etc?
I'm not but I'll tell you this. Wherever I go, I am eyeballing everyone around. ####### sucks but man if you are wearing all black, you are instantly on my ####list from the word go. This country is virtually producing these lunatics on an assembly line now. 16 years of schooling including college and all those years I never heard of anything like what has been happening in the last 20 years. Worst back then was a fist fight. If someone pulled a knife in the whole county school district it was collosal news.

So when I get home and see my 11 year old daughter...

If she knows about this, how should the discussion go?

If she doesn't know, should she?

How should parents responses be different based on age?

Just thinking about how to handle this.

ETA: Wife says that my daughter doesn't know about it yet.

Police rep confirms: 18 children pronounced dead at the school, 2 more pronounced dead at local hospitals, 6 adults pronounced dead at the school.
   I once shot a bird with a bb gun when I was a kid and watched him flop around in pain before I shot him again to kill him. It tore me up. I hated myself for doing it. What on earth must happen to a soul before it can gun down humans as little as 5 years old.
Same thing happened to me but with a squirrel. I felt bad for a very long time because it suffered.

Very weird. So that Ryan Lanza is following Adam LZ (Adam_LZ).

Adam just tweeted about 13 m ago:

"I have nothing to do with the shooting", etc.

Strange

wait a minute - when we thought the shooter was Lanza, we knew his mom was a teacher & a victim there, right? Does that mean that the real Lanza's mom was killed here? What a terrible way to find out your mom was killed...
The shooter was the brother, so same mother.
damn...so Ryan Lanza finds out that his brother killed a bunch of people including his parents from a facebook/twitter acount due to a mid-identification.
Sounds that way. But the way the day has gone, who knows.
So, if this is true, they found the Dad in the home and one other body (which originally was said that it was the youndger brother). Have they confirmed who that is, if it's not Ryan the older brother?
It's all so very confusing.

Yeah it is. According to twitter, Ryan Lanza and Adam Lanza are related, and both are denying it. Very odd. Maybe there are two Ryan and Adam Lanza's in the same town? Maybe hackers have their accounts?

So is ryan lanza adams brother?
lol the whole thing is such a mess. There was definitely a Ryan Lanza on Facebook, who grew up in Newtown and now lives in Hoboken NJ. I was on his profile within like 30 seconds of the time his name was first mentioned on CNN. That page has since been deleted but these recent screenshots make it seem like he's still posting that he was at work, he's not the killer etc. So either:He's the killer and the screenshots are fakes? He's the killer's brother who was killed and the screenshots are fakes? He's the killer's brother, but not the brother who was killed, and he's posting on Facebook unaware that his mother/brother are dead? He's totally unrelated to the killer(s) and it's just a complete coincidence that his name is also Ryan Lanza and he also grew up in Newtown and also lives in Hoboken?I can't figure out which of those, if any, makes any sense to me. Am I missing something here?
They are dead and the killers are controlling their social media.

If he's going to Iraq or Afghanistan maybe. I suspect personal protection has improved since the early days of the war but I know it was pretty common place for the troops to buy their own protection because they either weren't issued any or it was woefully unprotective.

Now they are reporting that the shooter's girlfriend and another friend are missing.
What in the world is going on with the media... Might be time for us to take a step back and analyze how the media covers these tragedies. On that note, the way the media is covering this reminds me of the Newsroom episode this year on the Giffords shooting. The show can be very preachy but I think they were spot on in lambasting media stations for trying to be the first to report any new fact without any real confirmation or account of the effect the misinformation may have.

Like others have touched on, pretty disturbing that the media is interviewing 6 and 7 year old kids about this.

Just coming in here to post this.My heart aches for the families of the victims, and the other students and families at the school. But I am just astounded at the insensitivity of media members who think getting the story from the kids is so important at this stage.

i always turn to this one by dan bern to work thru these horrific issues:kids prayer:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSke5BSzSjk

Talk to your kids Play with your kids Tell them your dreams And your disappointments Listen with your kids Listen to your kids Watch your kids Let your kids watch you Tell your kids the truth Best as you can tell it No use telling lies Your kids can always smell it Cook for your kids Let your kids cook for you Sing with your kids Teach your kids the blues Learn their games Teach them yours....

My wife called nearly in tears to tell me about this. As a parent of young children, it's totally impossible to wrangle with something like this. It's a really sick world.T&P to those poor parents. I'd never survive something like this.
Good Post! And Agree... Glad my kids are young enough I won't have explan this....

Just thinking about how to handle this.

A friend just shared this on FB, I'll be reading before I pick up my daughter from school this afternoon: Talking with Kids about News.
Thanks for posting. My daughter is already a little paranoid about making sure the doors are locked and such. I do not want her scared to go outside, to school, etc.

I'm going to have think about this real real hard before we talk.

So sad. Anything these days to get a story.

The media interviewing the kids reminds me of the Die Hard scene, where we probably all thought at the time "Wow, good thing the real media isn't so insensitive as this."

If nothing else, tell her to hide if something like that is happening.

News outlets still reporting that Ryan Lanza is the killer. Amazing that we've reached the point with social media that the so much of the public knows more than the news.

Here's another one someone linked to: Crisis and School Safety, Talking to Children About Violence: Information for Parents and Educators

For whatever this is worth - our school district sent the following message this afternoon for talking to children about the incident.

Good afternoon. This is Tom Shelton, superintendent of the County Public Schools. As most of you have heard by now, a tragic shooting took place this morning at an elementary school in Connecticut. Our hearts go out to all of those touched by this atrocity, as we are reminded how precious our children are. Topics like this are difficult to discuss with kids. If you decide as a family to talk about this situation with your children, I would encourage you to minimize their exposure to 24-hour news coverage. Instead, share age-appropriate factual information with them and answer their questions in ways that reassure them. We will be posting some tips for talking with your children on the district website, www.fcps.net, as soon as possible. Our schools are staffed with wonderful counselors and professionals who stand ready to help you or your children if there is anything we can do to support your family. It is natural at times like this for us to reflect on our own practices as a school district and I assure you that we will examine the safety precautions we have in place in our own schools and bolster them where appropriate. Thank you for the privilege of serving your family.

Normally I don't post personal thoughts, but I am noticing something in my mind that I have never experienced before with any other tragedy of this type. The calls for prayers and prayers are making me legitimately angry. Have never felt that before. Anyone else experiencing this?

Sounds like Adam had something on him that made them think he was Ryan.

Also, now saying father may not be dead.

What a cluster.

CNN reporting that the suspect's father, whoever that is, may be "very much alive" and not dead as previously reported.

So people showing compassion and offering prayers over this is making you angry? I suggest logging off and not reading this board if you can't handle that.

No. I see no reason why calling for prayers would make anyone angry.

Sadly it's a routine occurance and we can't even talk about it in any rational sense."WHAT PART OF SHALL NOT INFRINGE DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!!! RAWR!!!"
You can kill a lot more people with gasoline and styrofoam. I'm just sayin'...

Adam lanza, 20, was the shooter. Ryan lanza, 24, was in custody.. Nancy lanza was the mother

I think with all the other shootings we tend talk about Teenage or older kids/adults. When talking about kids as young as 5, it brakes a boundary that has never been crossed and somthing for most parents that shakes them to the core.

You need some time off the internet
