Another school shooting (2 Viewers)

Wow neighbor trashing the mom sort of
Care to unpack this?
Interviewing older lady neighbor, said the mom was very demanding and peticular. Said something to the affect of being difficult and mentioned divorce.Reporter asked if there was issues between the mom and son and the neighbor says, no not really....So i don't know what to make out of that
The guns used by Lanza were apparently purchased by the mom.

Nothing?Who knows more about the details of a mother/son relationship than a neighbor who obviously doesn't hang out with either?

I want to have some reasonable explanation why an elementary school teacher and mother needs at least three firearms, one a semi-automatic, and possibly more.

AFA (American Family Association) Spokesman Bryan Fischer Says Children Died in Shooting Because School Did Not Embrace God.

Bryan Fischer said that God could have protected the victims of this massacre, but didn't because "God is not going to go where he is not wanted" and so if school administrators really want to protect students, they will start every school day with prayer.
Yes, by all means, let's help these people get more exposure.

Mojo got the talking points email from superliberalsite.com faster than you did. Might want to let him handle this.

[typical gun owners response] I am a law abiding responsible person so I have the right to have as many weapons as possible. And everybody around is responsible and would never use the three firearms in the wrong way [/typical]

Security at our schools is not secure at all. We lock the doors. That's it. This past Wednesday, we had our Winter Concert. As soon as their kid was finished with their song, I saw tons of parents walking the halls in order to say hi to their kids in their classrooms instead of staying in the auditorium. At any point, a disgruntled parent could've been walking the halls unattended. I don't know what needs to be done, but something does.
It is hard to coldly just look at the facts at times like this, but maybe you can take some comfort in knowing that schools are incredibly safe places and school violence, like all violence has steadily declined the past few decades.

I see they are getting their talking points together before the next gun control debate starts.

Kids are much safer in school than they are at home or in a car.

It's unreal. When I was in school over 30 years ago, none of this was even a thought. Lock the doors for what? I can't even imagine what this country will look like in another 30 years.

Unfortunately, there is nothing anyone can do to stop these kinds of tragedies. You can't stop crazy, it ALWAYS finds a way. What a sad, sad day. :(
I was walking in Isla Vista when David Attias drove his car through a crowd of people, killing four of them. Considering how many people were out that night (any weekend night and especially Halloween), I don't know how the body count wasn't higher. Your statement is sad but true.
Side note here, I work in the film industry and I've never understood what makes people, directors in particular, want to be at work for 14-16 hours every day. Then I worked an episode of House that was directed by David's father (pretty sure it was the one with Dave Matthews). Once I knew who he was, I could see why he didn't want to go home (I think this was soon after the insanity findings). His eyes looked dead. Not dead like a shark's (very common in our business) but just without joy. Andy Reid must be like that. I can't imagine what they must feel like knowing what their child did and what lengths they have to go through every single day to just get out of bed and not swallow a bottle full of sleeping pills and ending it all.

So I go to pick up my girls (ages 9 & 10) from the ex's house tonight. First thing out of my 9 year-old's mouf, "Dad, did you hear the news?"... and she just couldn't stop jabbering about the shooting. She said she heard about it on the news. Luckily she didn't ask anything in the way of questions, which suits me fine because I didn't have any answers for her. She seemed really confused as to how such a thing could happen.

There no clear answers here. Best thing you can do is make sure they know that your relationship is one of love and acceptance. No matter what issues they are feeling, they can share with you and you will do whatever it takes to help them. As they get older, alert them to the signs they may see in themselves/friends that may be going through serious issues. Encourage your daughters to advocate for their own mental health and the mental health of loved ones.

Why did they haul off the brother in cuffs?
Cuff first ask questions later.
Where was he cuffed? At the scene or another place?
His apartment in Hoboken I think. Cops found him there and took him away in handcuffs.
Thanks for the info.I was expecting the "wrists" answer which is why I further elaborated on the question, but Abe couldn't resist.
I haven't been funny in a while, according to my wife. Looks like my streak remains intact.
Yeah, you need to find another thread to try and be funny in. It's not the time or place.
Sure it is. It's a damn grim thread. I've been catching up on it for the last hour or so and it's oppressive. A little tongue in cheek humor is greatly appreciated.

I picked up my 13 year-old daughter at school this afternoon. She was already aware of today's event. I neglected to ask her how she found out, but now I am curious. Did a teacher/principal break the news, or was it a viral story told by twitter/text/word of mouth?

It would have been everywhere man. You can try to shield it from children who are younger but at 13 she is in class with kid's with iPhones and iPads etc., all it takes is someone checking twitter or getting a text for people to find out.I remember distinctly when I was in I think 8th grade for September 11th. This was before smart phones and such but all the older kids still found out, whether through rumor or whisper, even if the teachers tried to keep it from us until the end of the day.

From what I gather, the first she heard about it was on the news on TV at her mother's house. I'm just glad she finally dropped it because I really didn't know what to say.

There are tons of idiots in the world using this tragedy to promote their personal agendas. We get it. Be careful and don't make the same mistake

Yeah, I am a teacher in the Eastern time zone. I didn't hear about it all day. Not from a kid or teacher or an administrator. Right at the end of the day, everyone in district received an email from the board office reminding us to make sure the doors are locked, not allowing anyone in except through the main office, etc. I immediately thought that there must have been an incident somewhere, but actual details weren't going around school. Unlike many professions, teaching isn't one that really allows for regular checking of websites, radio or tv stations.

Have to assume RBM either didn't read the comments or misunderstood them.

There are 3 positives that can come from this horror: 1) people can stop and realize the importance of giving time and love to young people (not because young people were killed, but because young people grow into adults that sometimes end up being so miserable that they engage in devious behavior, 2) people can realize that mental health is something we need to pay more attention to, 3)the national media in it's current state is not acceptable

The one about taking God out of school? Like I said I don't agree, but I really don't know how it's so offensive. I assume a lot of religious folks are thinking along the same lines. After everything that happened today, it's hard to believe people are so outraged by that.

Normally I don't post personal thoughts, but I am noticing something in my mind that I have never experienced before with any other tragedy of this type. The calls for prayers and prayers are making me legitimately angry. Have never felt that before. Anyone else experiencing this?
Yup

I got this alert from my child's school today (his school is 5 miles from Sandy Hook Elementary) :

Everything is fine at the school. We are presently in a lockdown; do not call the school, do not come to the school.

Needless to say my first thing was to call my wife and find out what was going on only to find her just as clueless as I was. When news started to trickle out what happened you just get weak in the knees. I cannot describe Sandy Hook to you except to say it is a very tiny New England town, one that I was looking at moving to about a year ago. Sandy Hook borders Newtown which is about the most picturesque town you could imagine. Sandy Hook sits right down the hill from the large flagpole in the center of Newtown. It is inconceivable that something like this could happen here, as Sandy Hook is no bigger than a postage stamp. I eat with my son before school at the Sandy Hook Diner, which is right around the corner from the elementary school. There is a vigil tonight at the churches and both Catholic Schools are also having vigils. My sons last day of school before Christmas break, was spent herded up in an posterior room of his classroom until the police released the school; fortunately the children felt that it was a drill and only got agitated towards the end. My hearts go out to the families in the community that are effected by this. I am laying in my bed with my son, talking about what happened today and am very thankful.

It's basically an LHUCKS type move IMO.

SeriouslY?? Huckabee is stating that if we still prayed in school this and other tragedies would not happen. That is really warped thinking. And Mike Huckabee influences a lot of people.

You don't think it's offensive to blame the shooting on people who had nothing to do with this simply because they don't think it's appropriate to teach religion in public schools in a multi-cultural, multi-religion society? Okay.

Is. He was posting to facebook while at work after his name was released as the shooter. Then he posted again from the bus on the way home, having no idea that his brother had killed his mother and then gone to the school. His brother had taken his ID, which was found on his body at the school after the shooting. That's how I understand it, anyway.

The outrage is that this supposedly "good" ##### bag is using this tragedy to further his personal agenda. It's disgusting, tasteless, and subhuman of him to do so. Just simply express condolences to the families and leave causality for another day.

FYP. Pretty sure it needs to be Christianity for Huckabee to be happy about it. I'm sure everyon in Al Quaeda prays every morning before they set out on their daily todo list.

I do not know; the names have not been released. I know people who live in Newtown and their children might go to Sandy Hook but as I said the town is very small. Tomorrow is going to be an eye opener for the grief of this community, when everyone is home from work.
