antidepressant trials suggested that children who received antidepressants had twice the rate of suicidal ideation and behavior than children who were given a placebo.

The rate of suicidal behavior (deliberate self-harm or DSH) among children and adults (24 years or younger) who started antidepressant therapy at high doses was about twice as high compared with a matched group of patients who received generally prescribed doses

I thought this was well known. In fact I think sometimes the anti-depressant commercials even warn about suicidal thoughts as a possible side effect

(I did not read the article so perhaps there is new news in it)

Well as usual the title is a little misleading:

Children and young adults who start antidepressant therapy at high doses, rather than the "modal" [average or typical] prescribed doses, appear to be at greater risk for suicidal behavior during the first 90 days of treatment.
With that said children are overmedicated in this country IMO and drug therapy should be a last resort.

hey brohans lets all just not respond to posts with misleading or tricky titles like this one and then maybe joe will see a page full of no response threads and do the right thing take that to the bank brohans

Correct. From the FDA: Antidepressant Use in Children, Adolescents, and Adults

[5/2/2007] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today proposed that makers of all antidepressant medications update the existing black box warning on their products' labeling to include warnings about increased risks of suicidal thinking and behavior, known as suicidality, in young adults ages 18 to 24 during initial treatment (generally the first one to two months).
