Does Gates have enough value to actually select him in the 2nd round? Being a TE, its always tough to select above other positions, so how high are you on Gates?

Who you would choose Gates before?

Would you select Gates over Jamal Lewis or Willie Parker

Would you select Gates over Chambers or Darrell Jackson?

Howabout before Moss or Harrison?

In PPR, yes he is that valuable. Only three WRs outscored Gates in each of the past two years. Not to mention the advantage of having an edge of 5-10 points a game before it starts on average.

But he is....thats the thing.Even without PPR Gates has more value than Chambers, Jackson, etc. and is just under Harrison and Moss.

My league made an interesting change this year --

TE TD's are now worth 8 pts instead of 6

TE receiving yarrs are now 1 pt for every 8 yards instead of 10.

After 100 yards receiving, TE's now get 3 pts for every 8 yards.

It is not a PPR league. But does this not make Gates even more valuable than if it was a PPR league with traditional scoring?

In TE req league I would take him around the 2.12, 3.01 turn. More likely early 3rd. It's like having an extra player on your team when he doubles the opponents TE in points.

That's where I took him one league, as I was picking 2nd overall. To me, that's pretty obvious that it represents good value. What is a little more difficult is picking in the bottom half. Picking 12th in a 12 teamer, either risk him that early or forget it. I can see going either way.

well, there is no ppr in my league but TE'S get points on a different scale than WR'S so they are getting more point with less yards so i think he is worth it.

Yes. Solid early third round pick in that league... if not late second round pick given that system.

i do want to add that even myself, im having a hard time deciding to take chambers over him. i think if cullpepper is healthy and looks good chambers could go crazy this year if he is putting up 1100 and 11tds with bum QBS he could possibly do 1200-1400 with maybe 13-15 tds. i see many projections on chambers, if cullpeppers healthy but they are not incresing his numbers, if healthy they will be better.

Would you select Gates over Chambers or Darrell Jackson? No

How about before Moss or Harrison? No

Chambers, Moss and Harrison have more upside than Gates... downside about the same. Gates should be consistant with the last 2 seasons but considering his #'s are ALL WORLD for a TE I wouldn't expect much of an increase. Chambers has the realistic potential of 12 TD's, 1300 yards and 80 catches. Chambers has a higher ceiling than Gates. Same goes for Moss and Harrison. Jackson is the #1 WR on one of the best offenses in the NFL. He's as safe a bet as you can get.

You could still get guys like Crumpler or LJ Smith 5 rounds later.

In the end it all comes down to draft trends and needs... but I wouldn't do it.

I would likely consider him before a Willie Parker or Jamal Lewis, doubtful over Moss or Harrison or DJax.

Put me in the camp of "buy low" in the Phil Rivers era. I might be wrong, but I'd take my chances a round or 2 later with Shockey over a 2nd round gates this year.

There is just too many good TEs out there for me to justify takeing Gates in round 2. I don't care what the scoring is....
