Have any analyses been done on how Superbowl winning teams are comprised, say in the last 10 years, or since whenever the new modern passing rules came into effect? In particular, I think it would be interesting to know:
1) How the salaries were allocated (e.g., by position)? Where was the money spent?
2) Proportion of players who were drafted by the team, signed as free agents, acquired by trade, etc.?
3) Offensive/defensive philosophy and rating
I'd be curious to see if any patterns would emerge and how predictive those patterns might be on a year-over-year basis. For example, setting Seattle aside due to how hard it is to win back-to-back Superbowls, could any patterns suggest a short-list of teams who are likely to win next year, including some we might not expect?
I haven't seen any data, but my hunch is that teams like Washington, Dallas, Houston, and others are comprised in a significantly different way compared to NE, Den, Sea, SF, and other steady contenders. I'd expect to see across-the-board similarities between the championship teams of Pitt, NE, Indy, NO, Sea, etc. I think the analyses would be particularly interesting on the defensive side of the ball, since the defense doesn't nearly get the same amount of attention as the offense. I'd also be interested in the offensive line, for example.
Anyway, just curious if anything has been done in relation to this kind of topic.
