Any love for ADP at 1.01? (1 Viewer)

Looks to me as if absolutely everybody is on the Chris Johnson bandwagon as the top pick in all drafts, regardless of format, league size or scoring system. I have the first pick and would like to make the argument to take Adrian Peterson instead. FWIW, 12 team redraft league, performance scoring with all TDs 6 pts, start 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR/TE, 2 flex, PK, defense.

As everyone knows, both of these RBs are beasts who are likely to go 1500-2000 total yards and 14-18 TDs. With the loss of their backups, there is no chance for them to lose touches, red zone carries or third down opportunities.

Peterson will not lose touches no matter how often he fumbles; although he has a reputation for putting the rock on the ground, his fumbles/carry and fumbles/yards ratios are average. In most scoring formats, no points are lost for fumbles anyway.

Peterson has proven that he is a consitently superior performer whether he has no support from his passing game (meaning when there are consistently 8-9 in the box), or whether he lines up behind a gunslinger who forces passes and throws even in obvious running situations. In other words, it doesn't matter whether Favre comes back or not, ADP will put up great numbers either way.

Here is the best reason to go for ADP insterad of CJ: Johnson has been good for one year, and great for one year. Peterson has been a beast for several years running, ever since game one of his rookie year. His consistency and excellence have made him the Marshall Faulk or Ladanian Tomlinson of today's NFL. He may not be the #1 RB every year, but it would take an ACL or an tsunami to keep him out of the top five. That's the closest thing to a guarantee as anyone can get in fantasy football.

I'm a big believer that you can't usually win a fantasy championship with your first round pick, but you can definitely lose one. Every year there's a Matt Forte or Willie Parker selected in the first round who buries his owner, since you can't build your team around a bust. Therefore, an important question every owner must ask before pulling the trigger on his first round selection is... which of these studs is least likely to screw me up? Who is the lock to give me first round production and be the backbone of my team, barring a prolonged injury? IMHO, this is why Brees is going before Rodgers in most mocks and drafts, even though Rodgers has higher projections across the board.

There's no question whatsoever that these two RBs are alone in the top tier, no disrespect to MJD, Ray Rice and the top group of QBs. Pick 1.02 is easy...grab whichever one is left. But at 1.01, I'm going for the guy who has done it for several years, under a variety of different conditions, in a tough defensive division. Nobody expects CJ to duplicate last years numbers, even with Lendale gone, and nobody knows how significant the dropoff will be.

For my money, it's gonna be AP. That's my pick unless some of you guys can talk me out of it.

I agree completely. CJ is a great RB but it almost seems like people are taking him 1st overall retroactively. He'll never post a season like that again and his numbers are almost surely going to decline meaning that he may disappoint some people that take him with the top pick. AP meanwhile has established over 3 years now that he's a surefire top pick that isn't likely to disappoint. I'd say he's more of a surething than CJ is at this point. If Johnson can post another year with elite stats then I would be more tempted to pick him at #1 in 2011 if I had the chance, but for 2010, give me AP at that spot.

You make it sound like ADP has been in the league for years while CJ is a bit unproven. ADP has played 3 season and CJ has played 2 seasons. That's not much of a difference as far as I am concerned. Of course CJ had unbelievable stats last year which might not be repeated. But he's also very likely to beat his 2008 stats because L White is no longer there and CJ is no longer a rookie. So if I take both players' stats for 2008-2009 combined, I get 540 pts for ADP in 32 games, and 556 pts for CJ in 31 games. In terms of consistency, I count 9 games below 10 pts for CJ and 8 games below 10 pts for ADP in the last two years. I am not against the idea of ADP #1. But the main argument would have to be another one than long-term proven consistency. Just my humble opinion...

I don't have a big problem with him at 1. I'd really love to be in a position to get him at #3 though, which is where I've seen him go a few times (behind MJD and CJ). I still think Peterson is the best pure rb in the league.

I don't think it is just a given that CJ goes #1...........I have the #1 pick and I go back and fourth.

However, picking CJ is not going to "lose" you your league unless he gets injured....and nobody can predict those type of things. I give a slight edge to CJ for the following:

1. He is the clear cut #1 choice to touch the ball on his team. The Vikings will throw a ton and even in the redzone (assuming Favre is there). You may think that could hinder him, but it was the same last year, and he dominated.

2. CJ is the only fantasy relevant player on his team. The reason I consider this is that I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. By picking AP, I will most likely try to avoid having Favre and Rice if other players on the draft board are comparable.

3.I like CJ's schedule a little better, although both seem to have nice playoff matchups.

4.When they are really close like this....I pick the guy I want to watch more, and that is Chris Johnson.

Agreed, my main reason for not ranking Johnson #1 is his TDs. He had 10 TDs of over 20 yards last year, and 7 of those came from 50+!!! That's not going to happen again. Those long TDs can't be relied on. Then his # of carries has to come down, especially from the 2nd half of last year. So less carries=less yards, and less TDs=not ranked #1.

A case can be made for AD, Johnson, MJD or Gore at the #1 spot. A lot of people are in the "what have you done lately" mode. AD is looked at as having a down year last year even though he scored 18 TDs and was 4th in rushing. Will he repeat that, who knows, but any one of the above 4 could put up #1 numbers this year. I would rather be a the end of the first, but the prime spot in the top would be #4 so you could get one of these guys and not have to make the choice of which one.

If you watched the majority of games by both players last year, to me it was clearly evident that Chris Johnson was a more explosive and dangerous player. That's not to say Adrian Peterson isn't a very good back, it should just show you how dangerous Chris Johnson is as a runner and as a receiver.

If you have the 1st pick and want to take ADP, then you should do it, he should have a solid year. From what I saw based on last year, to me there's no doubt that Chris Johnson is the 1st pick. In fact, I think MJD could be the 2nd fantasy back this season over ADP but again, that's just a personal choice.
