Anybody else think the Texans are primed for 2008? (1 Viewer)

Living in NJ, this was one of the first Texans games I've seen. Agree that they need DB and RB help the most. I doubt they make a serious run at the division until 2009 though as they are still very young. Does anyone think that with the RBs in the draft and as FAs, the best idea for Houston is to get Kenny Phillips in RD1 and take a FA or 2nd round RB?
The Texans don't have a second round pick this year it was part of the Matt Schaub trade.

Good writeup GregR.One thing I didn't see mentioned was the Offense's major turnover problems. The Texans lead the league in giveaways by a large margin and that has cost them dearly in a number of games. Much like the Injury issue, I wonder how much fumbling can be coached out of the players vs it just being a fluke. My dream offseason for the Texans would be signing Asante Samuel and Michael Turner and then having Kenny Phillips fall to us in the draft. That would fill 3 major holes and make us an instant force to be reckoned with. The most likely scenario, however, is signing someone cheaper like a Julius Jones type and then drafting the best corner prospect left on the board at our pick.
You're right, turnovers have been a huge issue. The interceptions aren't good, 17 which isn't worst in the league but isn't far from it. I think that could get better, as I think Sage doesn't see the field as well as Schaub, and I think with an actual season of playing under his belt Schaub might improve.Fumbling... there definitely are things teams can do to improve on fumbling. See Barber, Tiki. :kicksrock: Might need a new RB coach or at least bring in someone to work with them on holding onto the ball. Though some of those are the QB losing the ball on sacks. I don't think we've lost as many as Carr did, but we have quite a few knocked free from the QB.

Are they getting anything out of Travis Johnson? 3 consecutive firsts on DL can make a defense VERY stout.
He's definitely been playing better than he had earlier in his career, though still not to a level that I'd like to see. He had a good stretch of games in the middle of the season but has fallen off the last few, IMHO.

Mario Williams-incredible? Why has the media made this guy their golden child? He is no Kampman or Jared Allan and not worthy of the top pick.

2 words Indianapolis Colts.
Your crazy if you think Mario Williams is the media Golden Child. That would be Reggie Bush. For a second year player that is a half a sack from leading the league is pretty incredible. And just maybe Houston did get it right when they drafted Williams over Bush.
Actually, the media is spending alot of time making up for the crap the heaped on Williams for NOT being Bush or Young.

Whether he was worthy of the top pick - and I still have my doubts - he is having an excellent year and is playing very well.

The media seems to just be saying 'hey we might have been wrong about this kid'.

I think theColts will still be the class of the division, but the Texans do look like they could make a move upwards, depending on their off season.
:moneybag: I really don't get this. If we take for granted that Houston didn't want one of the QBs, what player should they have taken?Brick? Hawk? Huff? Even if we think they should have taken a QB, as much as I like VY and Cutler, they aren't necessarily more worthy of the #1 pick.

The Texans draft was very strong:

1 1 Mario Williams DE North Carolina State

2 33 DeMeco Ryans MLB Alabama

3 65 Charles Spencer T Pittsburgh

3 66 Eric Winston T Miami (Fla.)

4 98 Owen Daniels TE Wisconsin

6 170 Wali Lundy RB Virginia

7 251 David Anderson WR Colorado State

Spencer hasn't done anything, but show me a team with a better draft in 2006. Any team would LOVE to walk away with Mario, Ryans, Daniels, and Winston.

Actually, Spencer was playing very well until he suffered a major leg injury that he hasnt recovered from. They're hopeful he'll be able to return next year, but everyone is pretty skeptical of that. So the top 5 were all solid picks, and I dont think the last 2 are with the team any longer.

David Anderson is with the team still. He got some playing time this year when Andre Johnson was out. He had 12 catches for 131 yards, and had a TD against Dallas. He hasn't caught a pass since AJ returned, but has also played special teams.
