Anyone been to Shanghai? (1 Viewer)

Heading to Shanghai next week but will only be in town for one full day before getting on a ship. I know time is short but I want to be able to see a couple of the high points during my jet-lagged time that I am in the city. I'm staying in the Bund area of Shanghai and will probably within relative proximity to that area. It would be cool to go up the Shanghai Tower and get the view from the world's highest observation platform if it's a clear day.

I hope you don't prize your personal space.  I hated how crowded that city is and how close people would get to you.  Tons of people smoke too.

Besides that, it's a cool, interesting city.  I had business dinners set up for me, so I didn't remember any specific restaurants.  The bund area was fun with some nice views.  You'll like it.

I was there in 1992 and had a great time, though the places I visited are probably gone. I remember seeing some dragon boat races which were cool, and some amazing fireworks.

Went with my MBA class in 2008.  Agree that the Bund at night was was awesome.  We had a few nice dinners, but they were all arranged, so I don't remember names/places.  We stayed near Nanjing road, so right in the middle of shopping and a lot of stuff to see.  I remember our local guide took us to a bootleg market in a subway station.  Basically tons of "stores" selling bootleg merchandise.  Really nice, high-quality knock-off stuff.  You could bargain them down to like 1/4 of what they first asked for.  I got like 20 cufflinks for $30 or so, and a nice messenger bag.

Some tips I remember:

  • There's one color cab that's "legit," and another color that's "not legit."  I don't remember which one is which, but be aware that a lot of them are shady.
  • Keep stuff out of your side pockets.  Heck, keep stuff out of your pockets in general.  There are tons of little kids who come up begging for stuff.  They'll reach right into your pockets and take stuff.
  • Remember the phrase "Bùyào" (pronounced "Boo YAO").  If I remember right, that basically means "No" or "Don't Want."  You'll get solicited to buy everything under the sun walking around.  Saying "no" seems to just get more people coming up to you.  Saying "Bùyào" and waiving your hand as if to shoo them away seemed to work well.
