Anyone ever sign up for AncestryDNA? (1 Viewer)

Well, no, but mostly because it's expensive.

I would say do some family research first and see how far you can go back.

I'm half Spanish (as in Spain) and we have this odd family name from there that sounds Irish, and not Spanish, but it's no lock that it's Irish.

Question is, how far does this genetic DNA go back, like 1500+ years, or just say 400 or so?

People do get surprised. I've read or seen stories about African Americans who have the test done because they want to see what part of Africa they're from.... and it turns out they're part Anglo. And there are people who think they're going to discover their related to some dead president or maybe find that missing anglo heritage and.... they're part Arab or African, etc.

I thought the price was reasonable at 99 bucks.

I wouldn't do it to see the royalty that I may or may not be linked with but I think it would just be a decent experiment to try.

You're not going to find out names. Just ancestry in general terms, but there may be some surprises in store--you might find several strands linking to different countries and areas.

I'm interested because while my wife is Polish, German and Hungarian, she has pretty striking features. Looks maybe Middle Eastern, Egyptian, or Asian. My daughter was born with a Mongolian Spot (blue spot on the skin at birth, usually of Asian descent). So we are interested.

I figured this but I am interested in seeing the lineage to parts of the world.

I had no idea it was so cheap, I thought it cost hundreds of dollars for some reason.

In the 2007 thread, it did cost several hundred. There are several DNA ancestry kits you can buy now.
