Anyone have a hybrid auction league? (1 Viewer)

I'm looking for a way to have an auction draft, but not for the entire draft because it would take too long and get boring.

Anyone do like an auction for 5 rounds until the relevant players were drafted and then follow it up with a draft for the remaining roster?

Would love to hear how that worked and how it went.  Guppie league of local old guys... so just trying to keep things fun and interesting as our league enters it's 20th season.

Fascinating to hear how auctions unfold from your POV. What I have noticed, the more experience you get with auctions and the higher the owner quality, the less "homogeneous" the auctions will get. Specifically, you will get "round 1" type picks nominated at the very end and "round 10" picks at the beginning of an auction. Also, doing away with the bottom half of the auction eliminates a significant chunk of strategy - many people save their cash to go with a more well-rounded roster vs. blowing the wad on a few studs, and then filling in the remaining spots with scrubs.

I would advise shortening the initial rosters as a better way to improve the auction experience. Then, after week 1, have blind or open bid free agency to fill additional roster spots. For example, start with an auction of 10 roster spots per team. Then, after week 1, allow folks to bid on waivers/FAs and pick up players to fill the rest of the roster spots. This makes for a much more dynamic and active waiver period AND gets the auction done in a reasonable amount of time. For an additional twist, you can allow people to carry-over their unused auction $ towards the waiver/free agency bids (e.g. if I have $100 for the auction, and I spent $70, I have $30 left over for FA bids, in addition to whatever else my normal allowance is).

Hope this helps!

My biggest league and the one I've been in the longest is a hybrid auction.  We get $100 to draft our first 10 players.  After that we take a break and then start a standard snake draft to pick the final 6 players for our roster.  I really love this type of draft compared to a full auction.

Last year I spent all $100 on RBs and WRs.  Once the snake portion started I grabbed my QB, TE and DST right away and then more depth players.  I never drafted a K since there are not position requirements at the draft.  I just dropped a guy before the season started and grabbed a kicker then.

My long time league is a hybrid with each team receiving $100 for the 1st 3 rounds then snake draft for remaining rounds.  The best thing for this format from my perspective is your top 3 players are guys you like/want and the strategy involved with nominating players.   Went to this format about 7-8 years and everybody loves it.

How much do the top players go for in a league like this then?

So how do you do it,  do you "snake" nominate players?   Are there any restrictions on the nominations?    Do you require everyone to end up with 3 players?

I'm guessing his draft works like this.

There is a draft order for nominating players.  Any player can be nominated.  If you nominate a player that's hurt or is a kicker then most likely you're going to end up with him so no one is going to do that.  Only the best players will get nominated.  The auction would not be finished until each person had 3 players on their roster.

So, no one else has any other different rules for their auction drafts?  Was hoping this thread would make for a good conversation.

Some years the top players go for $98 which is the max for any one player as you must have $2 left for the remaining 2 players.  For instance, Gurly went for $98 last year - ouch..  Other years, the top players especially RBs go for $70-$80.  Some owners like grabbing 3 average guys and others like getting a top tier guy..

Draft order randomly done ago 2 weeks before draft.  1st draft slot nominates first then snake.  No restrictions on nominations other then you must bid on any player you nominate thus no one nominating a player that not worthy of first 3 rounds.  Once you have 3 players, you no longer can nominate.  Yes everyone must have 3 players.  The 12th draft slot starts 4th round of drafting.

So what happens If someone grabs three players before their final pick, but has the rule of "can't nominate someone they won't bid on"   but nominates a kicker knowing someone else HAS to buy him?

Once a person has their 3 players they are no longer able to nominate a player.  If you managed to buy the first three players nominated you would then sit out until the auction portion of the draft is done.  It's that way in any auction.

If you nominated a kicker in that type of league you're going to end up with him on your roster.

So if someone gets 3 players before they have nominated,  who then 'nominates" in their spot?
