Anyone use an adjustable sit/stand desk at work? (1 Viewer)

When I worked in DoD we had the standing desk option.  About half my active duty employees chose this option FWIW.

Yes, I have a Varidesk. I like it and the quality and construction is quite good. The adjustment from standing to sitting is VERY easy, though it's in the standing position pretty much 100% of the time for me. I also purchased the dual monitor arm, which gives me more real estate on the top of the desk.

By the way, I got the Pro series rather than the Pro Plus, because I preferred having a nice big flat workspace as opposed to it being broken up by a keyboard tray. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse, so I can simply move them down to the lower slide out tray and I have s ton of space for reviewing/editing paper documents.

Yes, I usually sit though :bag:

We have a few treadmill desks too in once side room, I've never used one ever though.

cool...I'm finding that around mid day, my posture sucks, I'm slinking down in my chair and my productivity starts to wanter (spending more time on FBG and other forums).

Thinking if I had one of these, I'd try and stand up to keep me focused and more engaged—less relying on lounging.

my issue is that I'm a graphic designer and use one of those wacom tablet/pen combos and not sure if It will be comfortable using it in the standing position. But I could always switch to a mouse when standing.

thanks...any other reviews welcome. Just a decent amount of money to drop on an 'experiment"

If you're going to stand a lot, I highly recommend getting a mat. Otherwise, your feet will get sore. I have the one that Varidesk sells and it works great.

:goodposting:

I've got this piece of #### mat, it's almost like a carpet... Guy next me has this thick cushioney stuff, I've compared, def makes a world of difference.

2 guys that are within 50 feet of me have those pen/pad/designer things - I've never seen them stand once.

Theyre both dad bodies though, so I don't know if it is lazy or bc of their artistic equipment

I'd recommend just putting a box or something to elevate your keyboard/comp/mouse and do this for a few weeks. Something makeshift to experiment - If you like it, then buy one.

I have 2 desks I use that are in different locations. One has standing option and I use it all the time. Very recommended if you can get one.

lol....can never be sure.

I love my tablet bc it is a more natural position for your hand (holding a pen) vs the mouse claw (bad for your wrist).

but the pen works best bc my desk is "L" shaped and my elbow rests on the desk. If not, you put a decent amount of stress on the shoulder

90% of my work has 1 had always on a mouse/pen and the other on the keyboard—unlike both hands on the keyboard all day.

Hmmm. If the L-shaped desk is instrumental to your comfort, I don't know that a standing desk will work for you.

yea...thats what i'm thinking...maybe more because of that I'm not a 2-hands on the keyboard guy, I always have ahold of my mouse/tablet pen, so I'll have an arm hovering all day.

I apologize for bumping this old thread, but I would like to share my experience in this matter, since when I was looking for good advice on this topic for myself

I also stand up as much as possible while working at the computer, and find it keeps my energy levels higher than sitting. At work, I will always stand rather than sitting if I have a choice. Also, I take every opportunity to walk/move while at work that I can and find I feel much better by evening time. It's amazing the number of people at work that won't believe that this is true and refuse to try it. I think they wear high heels (for looking good), but then end up trying to sit as much as possible throughout the day because they feel really uncomfortable walking or standing. I own a lot of high heels boots and shoes and would love to wear them at work, but then I always think I will feel rubbish at the end of the day if I do- as I will be trying to sit as much as possible as it is so uncomfortable to stand or walk all day in heels. I've also been using a stand-up desk by Vivo https://www.smarthomedesk.com/best-alternatives-varidesk/  for about 2 years. I work 4 days a week from home standing and it's great. The one day a week I have to work from the office and sit down all day is painful, I end up much more tired and grumpy after sitting all day then I am from standing all day. Though I don't just stand, I also do some exercises, punch things when idiots email, run up the stairs to see the kids etc. There are many interesting videos on YouTube, I'll leave one of them here, I hope someone will help in the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZi903mkis0

when you are washing parts in a wash tank thats technically standing right take that to the bank brohans

timely bump. Just this weekend, I redid my home office and added a standing desk and I really like it.

bought this guy during amazon prime day and added a $30 tabletop from Ikea. Its got height presets so i have it set for sitting and standing, 1 touch operation is money. Seems pretty sturdy, have a 21 inch mac monitor, my laptop with laptop stand and a few odds and ends on the desk.

If you get now, you really need to get a mat with it. Another FBG recommended it in the Amazon Prime day thread. ITs really comfortable and soft under your feet and it has edges that let you change your foot position often.

so far very happy!

I have been using Uplift Desk for almost a year now at home and at work.  I bought the frame only and for home had a custom top made from oak and at work used the table top of my former desk to match the other furniture in my office.

This has been a solid desk and the price was very attractive.

I've been rocking the Varidesk in standing position almost exclusively for 2 years now.  Because of my poor eating and drinking habits, I can't tell if it's helping me burn any more calories or anything, but I will say that my back rarely hurts anymore and my feet usually do just a little at the end of the day.

At this point, it'd be weird to work sitting down I think.  Also, provides a little extra storage so I've got that going for me.

I have one in my home office and love it.  I bought an Autonomous, its quite large, so plenty of room for all your stuff.

I do need to get a mat for it though.  My feet start hurting after a while.

Everyone at work who has one has picked their favorite orientation and locked it down - nobody varies theirs throughout the day.  It seems like the company should just have one that people can try for a week until they decide if they're going to be sitters or standers, then buy a fixed desk at that height.

I've been using an Airtouch by Steelcase for about 4-5 years now.  So, years ago, they were redecorating our offices and the woman in charge of it asked a few of us if we could help pick out a desk.  Back then we were still in traditional cubes and they were changing the entire office around and starting with the IT department.  We went to the main office/showroom of a Steelcase vendor, we were on a tour, after a while everything looked the exact same to me.  Anyway, as per usual, I had a lot of coffee that morning and I split off to find a restroom, got lost and I stumbled into the engineering department and I found they were using those Airtouch desks.

When I got back to the group they were all standing around and they said "well what do you think, have you seen anything you like?"  I said "yeah, can I show you?"  When I took them to the engineering department they had blueprints all over, etc. and the lady guiding the tour said "well but this is actual work office though, this isn't part of the showroom."  I said "yeah, I know but I really like this desk, it's exactly what I want."

So me and two other guys in IT had that desk for about a year or so, then finally the entire department got them.  Fast forward to this year, the entire company has sit to stand desks, they had a company come in and convert the existing desks to electric adjustable desks.  I would say about half the company takes advantage of them.

What I like most about it, is that I can't stand when someone walks up to my desk and hovers over me.  I like to look someone in the eye so I always stand up, raise my desk and speak with people that way.  I don't know why but it makes me very uncomfortable to sit in my desk while someone stands over me.  I do really like the sit to stand thing though, I would say I spend 65% sitting and 35% standing.

I'd say about 1/4 of the folks in my suite have standup desks.  As far as I can see, I'm the only one who still uses it transformed to standing up.

It does make meetings more casual since I can's sit behind the desk and talk, I have to come around and we sit in opposite chairs.  Like I'm a therapist.  Which is what a lot of my stupid meetings end up being anyway.
