Microwave kicked the crapper. Need a new one. Looking at one of the drawer ones since our microwave is in the island. Any thoughts on these drawer ones? Annoying? Better?

Wife added one when we renovated the kitchen.

In our situation it worked great as we don't have tons of counter space so not having a huge microwave on the counter was a plus and having a huge thing hanging from a cabinet would look too clutered.

I like that you top load instead of feed into the side.

Overall I just love that it's completely out of the way and unnoticeable.

Surprising thing I learned is that while there are a number of different brands, they are all made by Sharp, because Sharp supposedly holds the patents on these. Those must be some broad damn patents to cover any microwave that comes in a drawer....

Interesting. We currently have a microwave in the island, but it's a standard door load. Agree love having it in the island. Just wondering if we should stick with side load or go with drawer style.

I worry about the drawer not working down the road. Just seems like the mechanism will eventually have a hard time opening and closing properly for some reason.

It's power open and close and sometimes the kids push it shut and it just feels like it's gonna break something.

As opposed to the push button that pops the doors open.

No issues yet.

Have had it about 3 years

6 years going strong. Works great and looks awesome. Nice conversation piece.

Would definitely do it again.
You have a power open/close? Is it annoying lifting hot plates/food out of that thing? Looks like it could be a bad game of Operation.
Yes on the power open/close. We haven't found any additional challenges of lifting our hot plates/bowls from the regular door ovens. Actually like the additional room of reaching down - its easier getting things in an out.

We put one in our island when we remodeled our previous home about 5 years ago. I think Sharp was the only one on the market. We loved it.

Good point but we are pushing 7 years and no problems. We do have to watch visiting kids wanting to push it closed or pulling it open - you can hear the gears straining ...ouch. Still going good though!

Looks more difficult to clean.
No. A lot easier. The entire drawer comes out to the extent that everything in the "box below" is easy to get to. A quick wipe around (think kitchen sink) and its done. No hard to get to places. Haven't had burnt stuff stick or stain either.

How deep is your microwave, Bink? Is there anything that you can't cook in that, that you could in a counter top model?

They're supposedly all the same size.

Seems like I've really been sleeping on all the engaging conversations to be had around the ol' drawer microwave.

Considering I'm an appraiser and appraise a lot of multi-million dollar homes I'm surprised I haven't seen them before.

Expensive, but looks like a major improvement on door microwaves.

This contraption is ideal. For toddlers. And dwarfs.

"Don't pop it in the microwave. Drop it in the microwave. Yeah!!"

We were considering it as well since we have a microwave cabinet under the counter top and did not like the look of just plopping a microwave in there. We went with a Panasonic microwave with a trim kit to make it look built-in like those drawers. Cost was considerably less

Looks like this

Edit to add: Trim kit was $150 on Amazon and the microwave itself was $100. Those microwave drawers are over $1000 and so many of the reviews on Amazon are about how quickly they crapped out.
