If we are strictly talking bands and not individuals I would say the Top 5 in no particular order are:

Jackson 5

The Supremes

The Four Tops

The Temptations 

Martha & the Vandellas

I figured the J5, The Four Tops, and the Temptations would come up, but do you really think anybody but the J5 holds a candle to the Miracles? The Four Tops are great. So are The Temptations. I just don't think they even polish Smokey's lyrical stylings.  

I also should have delineated girl groups out of the equation, but didn't, so they're in the equation. It's apples and oranges at that point.

Girl groups are my favorites, actually. The two Rhino CDs I had of Girl Groups in college are among my favorites of all-time. The Shangri-La's are one of my favorite groups, ever, even if they weren't Motown. I was just thinking trad Motown. There's definitely a difference in what they were going for. 

If anything, I'm proto-feminist in my dissection of the girl groups.

By the way, I'm wearing a Dum Dum Girls shirt right now, which, as any feminine person would know, is interesting. It seriously sits on my body as we speak.

Temptations because any member could carry the lead if needed.   Four Tops had Levi Stubbs and the rest were interchangeable.  Same with the Diana Ross and the Supremes and Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. The supporting cast could be anyone.

My list would start with these guys & then the Four Tops. I used to have an outstanding mix tape with one group per side.

Not even more than two or three per week, really. They're just memorable. Seriously.
