I have read many, many places that the 2007 Giants are very similar to the 2001 Patriots team that went on to be heavy underdogs but went on to win the Super Bowl. But I wonder if they are more similar to the 1985 Patriots. For those that don't remember the 1985 Patriots team . . .
- Played the same team in Week 17 as in the Super Bowl (losing both times)
- Made the playoffs as a wildcard team at 11-5 (07 Giants went 10-6)
- Won their first playoff game on the road against the 11-5 Jets (07 Giants won @ 9-7 TB)
- Went on the road to beat the top seeded, 12-4 Raiders (07 Giants won @ #1 seeded 13-3 Dallas)
- Beat #2 seed Miami (12-4) (07 Giants beat 13-3 GB, the #2 seed)
- Patriots went to SB and got trounced by what many considered the best team of all time, the 15-1 Bears (Giants facing the unbeaten Pats)
The 2001 Patriots:
- Narrowly beat the 10-6 Raiders in the tuck rule game
- Beat the 13-3 Steelers in Pittsburgh
- Narrowly beat the offensive jaggernaut 14-2 Rams team
