The walked the table thread got me wondering how many introverts vs extroverts we have here.

Per the innerwebs:

Introvert - An introvert generally prefers solitary activities to interacting with large groups of people. If you would rather work through your feelings in your diary than have a conversation, then you are an introvert.

Extrovert - An extrovert is a friendly person who enjoys talking to and being with other people. Extroverts love parties, talking on the phone, and meeting new people.

I did two Myers Briggs tests in my life.  I am right on the border of Introvert and Extrovert.  I am also right on the border between Feeling and Thinking.

I looked up my personality type and found I share with Teddy Roosevelt and Alexander the Great.  Works for me.

The best explanation I've ever heard of what is the difference between an introvert and extrovert:

You are in a group and someone asks someone to volunteer, or answer a question. If your instinct is to volunteer or answer, you are an extrovert. If not, you're an introvert.

Extrovert here.

For me it's what would you rather do on a typical Friday night - watch a movie with your family or go to a cocktail party with a bunch of people you don't know.

Unless you are like me, and 99% of the other posters on this forum, and you are the smartest person in the room.  I'll answer questions all day long just so I don't have to listen to the drivel that comes out of other people's mouths, which simply prolongs the entire process.  I don't have time for that.

But I hate people though.  I mean being around people...

I like the concept of how one gains energy.

If you need quiet alone time to recharge you're an introvert. If you gain/draw energy from a crowd you're an extrovert.

I'm an introvert but my wife is very much an extrovert.  I measure a great weekend by my truck not leaving the driveway.  If I can make it a couple complete days without leaving the house, I'm happy as a pig in slop.

My wife, on the other hand, is not happy unless she is around people.  She is in sales and is really great at getting out and talking to new people.  She loves going to networking events and the like.

Every now and then, she drags me out and it's not the end of the world - I am ok getting out, it's not like I have a panic attack or anything.  I do understand that it's important to be social and I'm ok with that, but it's not my favorite thing.

yeah.  crowds exhaust me - being around people makes me feel completely drained.

I'm dreading my sister's NYE party as we speak because its going to be a bunch of her new neighbor friends.
my wife took on the responsibility for planning and hosting our neighborhoods NYE party.  Gonna be a big party full of neighbors I have never met.  As the husband of the host, I will have to at the very least be introduced to pretty much everyone coming.

for me, it's not really going to be torture - I'll do it, and I'll have fun doing it.  I'd much prefer a small get together at my house though.  For my wife - she will love every minute of it.

This is a perfect opportunity to bring some schtick to the party.

Show up wearing running pants and one of your race shirts. Be running guy and talk about all your great races, berate people for why they don't exercise, explain heart rate training to everyone.

Not something an introvert would do!

As much as I love talking running, I hate talking about it with non-runners.

Yup.  I can be extroverted if I want to, but don't usually like it.  My wife is very introverted, so in situations like yours I have to be the extroverted one.  Not my favorite thing to do.

Did you take an actual test with a Dr?  I have no clue what I would be diagnosed as.  According to this test, I'm a Mediator Personality (INFP, -A/-T).  The description is pretty interesting and seems accurate.

William Shakespeare, Johnny, Depp, and Julia Roberts are the same.  Weird grouping of folks....

When we moved a few years ago my wife suggested we get a pool table for the living room - has made entertaining much easier as all the men wind up in that room about half way through the party / just after dinner.  Lots of good multi-player gambling games - 3 ball, keno, etc.

This can go either way for me though, just depends on my mood/how my week went/whatever.

I enjoy both.

I was an extrovert until all the family stayed at our house the last 3 days. I will be an introvert the rest of the week for sure...

There was a thread on that test years ago. Busted a nut all day to write my own personality abbreviation - ESPN, i think - as a bit and not one person responded in those prelike days. wikkidpissed was i.

No, I did an online test as a part of an "exercise" at work.  Not sure what the site was we used though.  At the time, I thought it was a ridiculous exercise, but I have found that it has helped me better understand my strengths and weaknesses to a point that I can leverage them.

I decided my best option at my SIL's NYE party last year was to play bartender.  I made each drink a little too big in the shaker and poured the extra in to my cup.  Good way to sample what I was making and I was hammered after about 90 minutes.  Everybody loves the bartender and they move away quickly - worst case you get too drunk to do anything but sleep in the corner.

Brilliant!

I was an extrovert.. I was student council president in dental school.

I work an extrovert's job.

I've become more and more introverted every single year to the point where I have to really fake extroversion at work and by the time I come home I'm spent with talking to people..

How much of this conversion is due to the internet?

I think I'm really extroverted, I try to be the life of the party, don't mind speaking in public, try to make people laugh when I am speaking in public, but a great night for me is watching movies on my projector while having a few beers.  When I was younger I was always going out and doing stuff with friends but maybe because there's so much social interaction at work that going out is less appealing to me.

I'm also pretty arrogant.  Is that trait associated with either ext or int?

Wife claims I'm a vampire when we go out to where the crowds are. Feeding off people and she is just withering away.

Lol what a horrible example.

People preferring to spend time with family vs strangers does not make someone introverted. That's hilarious.
