It did seems a bit conspiracy theorish that Ancestry.com or whatever was really gathering data for the government.  But it sure seems like that might be the case.

You threw out "conspiracy" and gathering data "for the government." It's a bank of information that is voluntarily given and can be accessed by anyone for a fee. Why shouldn't the government be able to pay the fee and get what anyone else can get?

I can tell from personal experience they started the cold case up about 18 months ago. I was contacted about it a little over a year ago.
