Asbestos in my daughter's middle school (1 Viewer)

Back in the mid-1990's I lost a friend to asbestosis. He hadn't worked with asbestos since the mid-1970's. And even then, I gathered he wasn't working with it like a shipyard worker would be... he was just doing renovations of commercial properties at the time and had apparently had some exposure to asbestos in that line of work.

the moral of the story being just because your kid doesn't get sick next week, or even this year, doesn't necessarily mean there's no risk.
I dunno. Doing renovations for commerical properties sounds like an even worse type of exposure. Tearing down asbestos covered walls and stirring it all up during a time when people were just being made aware of the problem and really not taking that many precautions. I would bet he wore no protective masks or anything.
I'm sure he wasn't wearing any mask or anything. I wonder if the kids are at the school referenced by the OP.
Unless they are tearing up walls so that asbestos particles become airborne, there is no need for masks.
Especially since he already died from Asbestosis.

From what I have read following along on Facebook here in HB is that 3 schools were having asbestos abatement work done while school was in session. As parents found this out they starting wondering if it was safe. District assured them it was safe. Parents did not believe this answer and things continued on. Testing was done and asbestos was found in one of the classrooms at an affected school. At a special board meeting the board announced that all the schools in the district would be closed. The board then went behind closed doors and decided only the affected 3 schools would be closed. So the latest is that the 3 schools will be closed for 5-10 weeks. Now everyone is trying to figure out what to do with all the kids for this time period.

My 5th grade class went on a field trip to Love Canal without protective gear. You're the pansy.
At my Junior High every Tuesday was "All the Lead Paint You Can Drink" day.
When I was a kid, I had to get up in the morning at 10pm at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work 29 hours a day down at the mill, and pay the mill owner for the permission to come to work, and when we got home our Dad would kill us and dance on our graves.

He was asking if the kids were wearing them....

This has turned out to be correct. Hope View, the elementary school next to my daughter's middle school (Mesa View) was closed down, and I was told that it was re-opened, but that is wrong. It remains closed, along with 2 other schools, for 5-10 weeks. Several parents are upset that the middle school wasn't closed.

Are they doing asbestos abatement in the middle school during the school year? if they are, they are idiots.

I told my wife I'm making a trip to Love Canal tonight without protective gear. You old geezers inspired me.
Anyone can drive around that neighborhood. It is just an empty section of the community. At least it was when I was there 20 years ago. Guessing it hasn't changed much.

Hmmm. Can't tell if this is a whoosh or a brilliantly crafted zinger. Nice.

Either way, .

Crazy. Some parents both work, then what?

The story is that it was done during the summer, but they didn't quite finish. Not sure.
