Assani's Poker Thread (2 Viewers)

Update: I suck at poker. :(

I basically wanted to see early on whether or not I would be able to keep up the pace in order to go for SuperNova Elite. I think that if I had gotten off to a great start and had kept up the pace for a few months that I would be able to make it. But the exact opposite happened, and its tough to start off a quest of playing a ton of hands when you run bad to start.

I still may try to go for it. I'm not sure. Here are the two possibilities:

1. I quickly turn things around and go for SNE.

2. I continue to struggle, and turn back to MTTs, which are highly profitable for me but give me practically no chance of coming close to SNE.

Maybe struggling early is a blessing in disguise because I'd rather see right away if I'm not going to be able to keep up this pace than to get a few months in before realizing that.

Anyway I'm gonna be playing some MTTs today including the freerolls. I'll update if I get far in any of them.

Supernova Elite pace is absolutely insane. I can't imagine doing it. That said, ElkY should qualify sometime in April or May.

You should try blackjack.

It's more fun, you're can play it out at a casino while flirting with tons of gorgeous wimmens, and you make thousands of dollars.

That, or sitting at home in the dark on your computer playing everquest ePoker.

:hangover:

Is everyone still playing Stars?? I thought they were one of the ones who discriminate against us americans? I have played Full Tilt some but have not tried to go back to Stars. Anything I need to do different if I go back?

Nope. Stars is business as usual.

Nope. Stars is business as usual.
Traffic is higher there, and they've added some big games (200/400 NL, 1K/2K limit) and some draw games, that's about it.
DAMN how big are the stacks at that table??

Some poor guy's sitting there right now with $40K looking for a game.

This might be a totally stupid idea, but have you thought about partnering with someone and sharing a bankroll and both working on one account towards SNE? Is that possible?

That has been raised on twoplustwo....it is most definitely cheating and against the terms and conditions of PokerStars. Also unless you share the same computer(i.e. roomates) it'd be very easy for PokerStars to detect this.

Care to say why you don't think he should make the call? Putting myself in his shoes I see that hand this way...

He's got to think there's a wide range of hands you're pushing with (as you said so yourself), and he's risking less than a third of his stack to almost double up. I realize he's not left with much if he loses but he's not in great shape anyway.

Now I really didn't look at where this was in the tourney and what not but I'm just curious and I'd like to hear your thoughts on his call.

I easily could've been overreacting due to emotions a bit. I would've folded the hand because:

1. I don't like playing huge pots with a hand that could easily be dominated

2. If I'm going to get a big portion of my chips in preflop late in a tourney I'm going to do it betting, not calling.

But upon further review I don't have a big problem with his call I suppose.

Cool, just wondering, since I've gotten back into poker lately. Keep up the hand history posting I think it's helped my game.

Yeah, the thing for me is that its simply a risk that you don't need to take. With his chip stack he was in no immediate danger of going broke. Imo he could wait for a much better opportunity. Now many good players, pros even, will disagree with me here as they have an "all or nothing" type of mentality where they're not avoiding any profitable situation becuase they jsut care about first and don't care about moving up the pay ladder. I'm much more conservative than that, so it can just come down to style at that point imo.

Assani,Any update on your progress toward Supernova Elite? What stakes are you playing now?Bankroll update?TIA
I only have 11,000 VPPs so far, which is way behind the pace of ~2700/day. But I'm going to start a HUGE session in a little while.....theres no $162 tournament tonight, so I'm going to just play ring games and try to have my longest session ever....will update when I'm done.I'm actually down a few hundred on the year, which obviously sucks. Tonight when I'm 10 tabling I'll either be playing $.5/1 or $1/2 NL. I'm all over the place right now with the stakes I'm playing. Last night I was multitabling $3/6 PLO8 for example.Right now I'm obviously lacking discipline, but its amazing how much easier it is to be disciplined when you're winning. If I can have a few good session and get back on track(as I said I'd like to make $500/day on average through the year) then I think I'll have no problem sticking to the right limits and putting in the hours.

How long did you end up playing? Were you +money?

I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering and you are obviously free not to answer, but how did you do last year?

Assani,Any update on your progress toward Supernova Elite? What stakes are you playing now?Bankroll update?TIA

Got frustrated early and switched to Omaha8...ended up winning a small amount on the day, and I did play for quite a long time but I fell short of the "longest session ever" goal.

I'm so bad at keeping results, but I'll say this:I worked no job other than poker, I paid rent and bills each month, I partied pretty hard in Vegas for a month and a half, I played in a ton of live events at the WSOP and Borgata Winter Open including 2 $10K buy ins, and I bought some cool stuff. However my bankroll is pretty low right now.At 24 now, I want to start making enough to start saving rather than just spending it all. Thats the goal for this year.

Went to Borgata the other night and had a decent session. I think I may start going there a lot more often, as the competition online has gotten a lot harder imo. I just played $1/2, and I had totally forgot what it feels like to play with complete morons....so much fun! I won $400 in about 5-6 hours and would've been $800 if my AA had held up when all in preflop against TT.

I don't have a ton of experience, but what is a reasonable expected hourly rate at a $1/2 or $2/5 NL game? I havn't had a consistent winning stretch in a long time, so I really don't care about not playing the higher stakes right now...I just love the low risk factor of playing with such bad competition like that, so I may do it for a while. But I was probably running well, so I want to be realistic. If I start going to AC more often I'll have to factor gas and hotel stay in, so I need to be making more than usual.

Anyone else planning on being there for the Winter Open? Fred, I know that you mentioned it earlier but said you weren't sure. I think I'm going back on Monday and staying a few days.

On a side note: I want to stay in shape while I'm there(and in future trips there), but I don't feel like spending big money at the Borgata....whats the cheapest hotel there in AC that has a gym for use by those staying there?

I've played at the Tropicana, but I've never played at the Borgata. Do they have a good selection of lower NL ring games? Is there usually a long wait?I'm only an hour away from AC and was thinking of maybe hitting it up one of these days......probably a weekend night.

Assani,

Any update on your progress toward Supernova Elite?

What stakes are you playing now?

Bankroll update?

TIA

You know a lot more about poker than I do, but if you really want this to be the year, you have to stop falling short of your goals. Think about it like this-- if you fall short of our goals all year, it will just be another dissapointment.Don't keep saying you'll start hitting your goals next week, do it now. Next week will never come.

What advice do you have for 1/2 live?
