Assani's Poker Thread (1 Viewer)

I like a bunch of others have been reading along for a couple weeks. In the beginning it seemed as if your aggression worked in your favor and now it seems to be working against you. They are willing to pay a few hundred to get in on the flop, then if they don't hit their set they fold and you come away with a small win but when they hit they are getting paid off in the $1000+ range. You are often involved in very big pots but you are usually the aggressor.

I think you are a very good/gutsy player but it may be time to slow down, concentrate on a table or two and alter your game aggression and not try to win back $4000 in one hand. Grind it out. I am not the expert that many on the board are just an observer giving my 2 cents.

Day 35/36(continued)

Thought he'd call with queen here...guess not.

I'm going to increase my tables. Maybe up to 10 just like olds times. Sorry, but I can't write the HHs when I do this. Will give stats later.

Winning so far....have played about 15, up a few hundred. Hard to get up to 10 since they take a while to fill up.

I'm actually capping it at 8 tables at a time.

Ended up winning about $2K at the STTs...gonna call it a night. Horrible day. Think I'll play a lot of STTs tomorrow.

So having played in the World Poker Tour this past week has left me wanting much much more. I'm tired of being an average online semi-pro player, and I'm going to try to "make a run."

During the next 100 days, I hope to make $100,000. I hope to do this playing online $10/20 NLHE, $10/20 PLOh/l8, and NLHE MTTs. I think I have enough skill that if I were to have decent luck, I could indeed accomplish this. However, focus and dedication have always been a problem for me. Thus I am going to keep a blog on footballguys and on my myspace blog. I hope that this will keep me accountable. I will check in every day and post my progress as well as key hands.

I don't expect to accomplish this goal. I realize that it is lofty. But I need to challenge myself. I realize that posting all of my key hands may give opponents an advantage(for example, David Dodds reads FBGs and I play with him from time to time), but I'm not so much concerned with that, as I feel as if I mix up my play enough that it will be moot.

Also just for the record, this will not be 100 calendar days, but rather 100 days of playing poker, as I will be taking days off due to different events that may arise(I know, for example, that I'll miss a week in late February due to vacation).

This kind of posting is absurd. Otis openly acknowledges that he is a losing player. Is Assani averaging $1000 per day? No, he is not. But let's be serious. He is 23-24 years old and has only played poker for 3 years. He is playing a lot of NL poker at some of the highest buy ins on the net averaging over $250 dollars a day. He has made just under $9000 in just over 30 days of playing cards, despite clearly being on tilt a couple times and playing less than his best for several stretches. Think about that. That is incredibly strong poker. You don't mearsure a serious player's worth in sessions, you measure it in months. Winning months and losing months. Last month, he was up about 9K. I feel confident, that most months, he will be a winner. This would have been just as compelling a quest to me if he had titled it "100K in 10 months".He would be just a tiny bit off the pace. Can his play be critiqued and questioned? Without a doubt. Does he have room to improve? Clearly. However, he is about as far from a losing player as you will ever find.

Also just for the record, this will not be 100 calendar days, but rather 100 days of playing poker, as I will be taking days off due to different events that may arise(I know, for example, that I'll miss a week in late February due to vacation).

Lets change your name to Assani OTIS Fisher
:ptts:
I know you are trying to be funny or clever, but I am not making any excuses. I pointed to a scoreboard: +8900 in 30 days.If it said -$20000 in any period of time, that would be more like you. The one part that makes it almost funny is that you are the leading shirt pointer about poker. It usually runs like this: Otis sucks at poker, Otis is actually a good players, Otis is winning tons, Otis pissed it all away, Otis is just unlucky (without any substanial hand histories) , Otis gets his money in with the best hand, just ask bagger or somebody, but Otis hits it with the ladies in his flip flops in NYC.

Playthe same song again in 3 months or less.

My last session took me nearly down to even for the entire quest(think I was actually down a bit actually before a good run at STTs). Financially, I'm still fine, especially for my age and situation, so I'm not worried about that.

I don't doubt my skills as a poker player at all since my records over the long run have given me confidence(For the past 3 years, I've done "real work" for about 4 months. Other than that, I've supported myself solely from poker), but I think its time to accept the possibility that I'm not playing winning poker right now for whatever reason. Today I played in the Million $$ guaranteed at Party and I went out when I made a crying call on the flop and the turn even though I sensed I was beat- thats not "Assani Fisher poker."

I looked over my last 2 day session(Days 35 and 36, which were combined since I stayed up the whole night) and I only noticed 3 plays where I really got out of line: Once I way overplay AKs. The other time, I tried to bluff and was unsuccessful. The final time I made a horrible call with my overpair when it was very obvious that I was beat(this was my worst play by far, and was totally out of tilt). I think I was put into several horrendous spots(several of which I folded) and took my share of bad beats. However, the last thing I want is for this to turn into is me crying about my lack of luck, so I'm not going to complain anymore.

I am wondering if posting this blog is helping me anymore. When I started out, I thought it would serve as motivation and encouragement. Everyone has been great with the advice and encouragement, but I'm not sure if I'm getting much out of it anymore, and I'm definitely not enjoying publicly going through a $30K downswing. Quite frankly, its embarassing.

With 64 days remaing and me being about even(I'm literally a few dollars away from being exactly even), I'd have to average a little over $1550 per day to achieve the goal. I certainly can do that, especially if I get to a final table of a MTT or two. But posting all of this is no longer fun and has turned more into a chore for me.

I hate giving up, especially with so many people having followed me(over 1200 posts at the footballguys message board and over 2200 blog views at myspace).

Mentally, I'm doing alright. I've gone through similar downswings before, and while it is never easy, I accept it as a part of poker. YMIA. Despite how it may come across as times in my blog, I don't tilt nearly as easy as the average player imo, and I'm not concerned that I won't be able to regain my winning form.

Furthermore, I think that going through this downswing more accurately shows the life of a poker player than if I had simply coasted the entire way. In that regard, I'm glad.

My long term poker goals are the same now as they were at the beginning: To make a living off of poker, to be extremely successful at it from a financial standpoint, to be a good embassador of the game, and to become one of the top players in the world.

I need to evaluate if continuing with this quest helps me achieve those goals or not. While I have derived pleasure from the many people telling me that they have learned from my blog, I feel as if I must be selfish in making my decision here and solely base my decision upon that aspect.

I'm going to play a bunch of MTTs in the next few days, including the WSOP circuit at Harrah's in Atlantic City and the World Poker Tour at Foxwoods at the end of the month. I'll gladly post updates on how all of that goes, and no matter what I will continue to discuss the game online with anyone who wishes to.

As for continuing with the blog, I'm not sure right now. I honestly don't feel like continuing it, as it definitely is not fun right now. But, on the other hand, I would be disappointed if I ended up winning $100K or more in the coming 2 months and did not document it as I had planned. And also, I don't like the feeling of giving up. We'll see.

-Assani

I'm good for it. I'd pay whomever back.

Assani, maybe you're just not that good of a cash player, you're a very good tourney player. Maybe you played too many cash games at the same time before getting used to it. Maybe the winning streak at the beginning got you into a different playing style. Maybe

Anyway good luck in whatever direction you decide to take.

I don't blame you for wanting to back away from the posting. I want to say that I have enjoted reading the posts, very interesting and insightful. I'm sure alot of the guys here will agree with me. It has helped my game tremendously! Whatever you decide to do I wish you luck.

Whatever you decide to do Assani, I appreciate all the work you have put into this thread. You have my respect as a player and as a person for being bold enough to set strong goals, and posting hands that are both good and bad so that we all have been able to learn from them.

Steve

Day 37

3/20/06

I'm going to keep going. Lets play.

Playing in 2 $10/20 ring games and about to register for 2 $530 STTs. I'm feeling good about myself here. Its been quite a roller coaster so far. I think I got carried away trying to win too much too quickly. Right now, I need about $1500/day to achieve the goal- I can do that.

Very first hand....wow.

Out of STT already! 33 in EP, limp, LP raises 3x BB. Flop comes K-K-3. I check and call his continuation bet. Turn is a Q. I check raise, he re raises, I push. I put him on AK. I didn't think he would've made a raise preflop with KQ and I figured he'd be pushing with any king there, so the odds were at least in my favor...turns out he had KQ.

Second STT is starting now.

Didn't enjoy laying this down with position.

A7 loses to 25(yes 25) when a 2 comes on the river and I'm out now....frustrating. Extremely frustrating.

Weird spot...was planning on check raising on the flop, but then LP's raise made me unsure of how to play it. Obviously was going to check raise on the turn....really didn't get much at all out of this.

Taking a break for a while now. Up about $1300 on the day so far.

9:30 now. Going to play for a hour or so and then head out for the night. Feeling pretty good about my game right now. Kind of wish I could play all night tonight, but its my friends birthday. Going to play 3 tables for now.

I've discovered that $150 seems to be the 'breaking point' for a lot of people with this move and I have to bet that to get them out. Unfortunately, with the short stack behind me I didn't want to bet more than $125 and possibly be pot comitted against him. Luckily it worked out still.

If anyone is planning on being in AC this weekend, let me know. The WSOP Circuit is at Caesar's and I might play in the $1000 buy in MTTs on Friday and Saturday.

I am at work..But if you are trying to make a point I don't get it. I have made more sitting at work surfing the FFA than you have at home playing poker until your eyes bleed.

My attitude about poker may be alittle better than yours at this point too.

Ive said it once, ill say it again.

You need to switchup games. Play some micro stud hi-low. Once you watch yourself piss away 2 full buyins ($4), you will realize how unfocused you are. It doesnt matter what the stakes are, you should always be 100% focused.

That said, there is no shame bumpin down in limits. Once you have regained your focus, you need to get back to playing more solid poker. More solid poker includes only investing in pots where you can double up. Taking over a table and watching your opponents every move.

I think you should consider dropping to 1/2 or even .5/1. While it may not be flashy or "be worth your time", in fact it is. Meaning, if you cant beat .5/1, you have no business considering 10/20 no matter how much you can or should win.

Prove to us you are a good player. Win 1k playing .5/1 or 1/2 over a week. If you cant do that, you may want to get back to playing your tournements.

While I enjoy this thread, that's not exactly something to brag about.
LOL, good point. Probably at least 5 years ahead of myself with the comment(hopefully). I've taken the jokes from Otis, Joe T, etc. but that was noleswin's very first post in the thread, so I felt like I should respond....no big deal though, just defending myself, and I'm still in a good mood and extremely appriciative of the support being given in this thread.

I hear you man...to be completely blunt though, I'm too stubborn right now to do that. I don't disagree with you; I'd just hate doing it. I'm going to try everything possible without dropping down first, and if that doesn't work then I'l resort to that.I told RFW in a PM a while ago: Just because I don't always follow your advice doesn't mean that I don't agree with it. Have patience and remember my youth.

I'd say the same thing to you here....playing $.5/1 would be ridiculously boring to me right now. For 2 days, I played solely in MTTs, and those are relatively low risk, so I feel like I'm ready to play again...like I said, you're probably right though.

Assani, Don't get me wrong I wish you the best. You are trying to live a dream. I enjoy my job however and you were trying to make a BS point. My point to that is a job cooking fries at McDonalds is making more in a week than you are at poker for the past month+

Good luck Assani I hope you turn things around. Success is fun to see.

These 2 bolded statements should help you realize you are concerned more about trying to win money than play good poker. Remember, winning money doesnt mean you are a good poker player. Playing solid poker regardless of the stakes (or game for that matter) is what is important. Also, your stubbornness is causing you to lose money. Dont you want to be the guy that is able to realize and overcome his faults instead of being the guy that succumbs to his faults? I know I want to be the guy that fixes his leaks at any price (even if it is my sanity playing micro stud hi-low). Remember, everyone has leaks. They are a part of the game. You can try to fix them, or pray that they go away. Are you a praying man?If (and I mean if), you were to continue to lose money, wouldnt it be better to lose buyins of 200 instead of 2k?

Also, IIRC you should have 15 buyins to play NL. So unless you have 30k, you should not be playing any more 10/20.

Dont forget to play less tables ;)

Assani playing micro would be a waste of time. It's a waste of MY time, and I suck at the game.
You are mistaken. In limit games, there are "correct plays" and "incorrect plays". Now a micro NL game would be a different story. Take a read over SS2 section on hi-low 8 or better. Great read and gets those analytical nuerons moving again.

Financially, I'm still perfectly fine to play $10/20.I have played less tables. Never more than 4 now. Sometimes less(2 right now).

You're right about desire to fix leaks. I also possess that desire. However, my amibition and goal is so high that I want to 'fix' it in a different way than you're suggesting:

One way to fix it is to drop down in limits and regroup, as you're suggesting.

Another way is to develop the skills to fight through bad slumps without a dropoff in play. This will ultimately make me the best player if I can do this imo.

One way to fix it is to drop down in limits and regroup, as you're suggesting.

Another way is to develop the skills to fight through bad slumps without a dropoff in play. This will ultimately make me the best player if I can do this imo.
How long have you been using this strategy?

If you cant do that, you may want to get back to playing your tournaments.

I think lower limits are not a bad idea. After my stretch playing at those top limits and learning a lot, losing a lot and winning a lot, I gave up poker for a while, and recently just moved pay to playing at the 1/2NL shorthanded tables just for "fun" while kicking around in front of the TV. I'm not trying to make money, just enjoying playing, and I any time I win I cash something out. Even if it's fifty bucks, I walk away feeling happy knowing I watched some TV for an hour and my checking account has 50 more dollars in it. This this approach over the last 10 days or so I've cleared about $2500 to my checking account from an initial 50 dollar deposit, and I still have 400 in there to toy with. I've only had one losing session.

The lesson here perhaps is that after playing at those high limits with the best players out there, it is very easy to absolutely own the 1/2 and 2/4 games. Some of the play is so unbelieveably bad. Every bluff is telegraphed. Some of these guys sit down just begging to give away money. I am amazed at how easy it is to take $100 or $200 from these guys. Then again, it makes some sense to me too, because I remember sitting down at those tables 5-8 years ago with $100 and thinking I had some clue but really in restrospect having absolutely none.

Bottom line -- I'm not playing high stress poker. I'm not multi-tabling at the big stakes. I'm not trying to supplement my income. I'm just kicking back, playing 1 table, and absolutely owning it. I think the same might be a better approach for you. You would absolutely dominate these tables and probably make a very steady $1k per day, which is the pace of your goal (as opposed to this $5k and $10k roller-coaster you have been on against much tougher players).

Good luck turning it around.

Its hard to say because its hard to determine which losing days I was playing poorly and which ones I simply got bad cards. I definitely used it at first, and I believe that I have had quite a few good days of playing that havn't produced results recently.

Really?

I am at work..But if you are trying to make a point I don't get it. I have made more sitting at work surfing the FFA than you have at home playing poker until your eyes bleed.

My attitude about poker may be alittle better than yours at this point too.
I'm nearly 24 years old and except for one 4 month stretch, I've never had to work a real job in my life. Exactly how much have you made "surfing the FFA"? Somehow I doubt its more than me...

$2500

$2700

$9300

$13,000

$1500

a few thousand

$8000

$33,000

I only searched the past 5 months- Didn't feel like searching anymore and I think you get the point. Have fun getting up for work tomorrow. :bye:
:own3d: :ptts: :goodposting: :lmao: Assani, have you hooked up PokerTracker yet? I had the thought the other day that one reason you were successful in the beginning and now you're starting to encounter more resistance is that other players have a pretty decent book on you right now. The same way a rookie hitter in the majors might tear up the league for a couple weeks, and then hit a slump once scouts have figured him out. And I know you've said that you believe you can adjust to people's adjustments to you, but I think players who aren't as good as you might be able to play on your level because they have the advantage of PT.

Those are my two cents, anyway. Good luck.
