Isn't this a flop you should be betting at often given the action so far? I think its a good opportunity for very balanced play, betting with both nothing and v.strong hands like second trips. And, yes, too timid on the river, IMO.

Nice start to the session on my very first hand.

Munga, I'm not Assani but some of these I'm going to take a shot at answering.

I absolutely agree with munga. This is a situation that an aggressive player is more likely to get action by betting into this flop than an average player. I hate losing value on hands like this but I like that it appears that I'm out to snatch every flop that looks scary.

Why no river bet here?
The above hand, when you have A7, this is one where the value bet is very very slim. There are only two aces you beat - A5 and A3. On the turn you beat 3 aces but the 6 on the river took one of those away. In most cases, this dude will not show up with A3 here. In fact, I find his play putrid. In most cases, he will show up with a hand like AJ and he will call the river bet. If on the other hand, you are good, it's unlikely that you get called (barring A3 or A5). Playing this hand back, I would have a hard time putting him on A3o. Call a raise preflop. Call a decent flop bet on a completely unconnected board. Call a turn bet, even a smallish one, with a total blank hitting the board. There is almost no way you could get me to bet the river here with A7.Unlike limit, you have to be careful betting for value in situations like this. In limit, if he raises, you, you can call, making a bluff much less likely. Here, if you get raised, you have to muck a $600 pot. And frankly, Assani bet this weak enough on the turn, that a weak bet here may get raised and a strong bet is only called by hands that beat him. So while I bet Assani thought he was behind here and that he would be called, even if he is not, there is danger in betting.

In this case, he was likely up against a mid-pair. Is there any value to be had from checking? He was likely calling the flop reraise with the idea of flopping a set and is very unlikely to give any more action to this hand without turning a set. The hand ranges most people put on a reraise are AA-JJ and AK. Since your opponent probably has 88-QQ or AK himself, it's very hard to get much action out of him here when he knows he is probably behind. Your best bet is to fire at the flop and hope that he has AK. This just isn't the type of board that anyone is gonna hang himself against an overpair with. On the other hand, if you get a ton of action on the turn, 9 times out of 10 you are gonna lose a big hand.

In this hand, with no true draws, I would say he is either way ahead or way behind. That said, your BBs should only get called by hands that beat you. In this instance I think the value in checking is that it will cost you much less if you are behind and might win you 1 more bet on the turn or river if you are ahead.

Well, there is the spade draw, but Assani has the As in his hand.
Total sidebar, but ive been tossing back in forth in my head some thoughts on situations where there is 2 to a flush on the flop where you have a high single in your hand. From a high level, my thoughts are you should be much more willing to keep people in the flop and much less willing to keep people around on the turn (when the draw does not hit). If the draw does hit the 3rd on the turn, you now not only have you original hand, but possibly drawing to the highest flush. These are not precise thoughts mind you, but some strat considerations when a flush draw is onboard while you have what is most likely the best hand.

Day 39

3/22/06

I'm going to totally take a break from all ring games and STTs for a while and concentrate solely on MTTs for the next few days. Hopefully I can hit one big and regain some momentum.

Playing in a $109 MTT at Party now at 1:00.

I would've called(and suffered a horrible bad beat) if the other guy didn't.

First break at Party. I'm at 3200, average is 6300, 146 out of 310 players left.

The all-in fest in these rebuys tourneys is hilarious btw....so funny to see people pushing for 40 BBs preflop when its been folded around to them.

I decided not to add on at Stars. I'm about 3700, average is 7000, 91 people left. Have been a total of 402 $109s paid even though theres only 112 entries, so I'm getting a huge overlay since I only paid once.

Nice.

Blinds were 600/100 with a 50 ante and I was down to under 10K. Pushed with 66, called by QK and AK. I had QK covered but not AK. A queen and an ace both came and I was eliminated in 24th(18 spots paid).

Better get a move on. You need to average +2500 per day for the last 40 days to meet your goal. btw, you totals should be red.

Damn I didn't even realize he had 9 losing days in a row. That's crazy.
I'm going to be focusing on MTTs for the next week or so, so its not unlikely that will continue since MTTs are either "lose a little" or "win a whole bunch" usually. Hopefully I can break through in one and reach a final table.

Day 40

3/22/06

Going to play some more MTTs today starting with a $109 at 1:00 on Party.

Played 50 minutes and stayed just around average before getting AK and raising preflop. Flop came A-10-4. He had TT and took my stack.

4:00 now..playing in another $109 at Party.

Felt like gambling early.

The reason I min. raised here is because I knew that it would essentially put the BB all in no matter what I raised. And I could still get away from it if a bigger stack re raised. I think a mistake that a lot of people make when dealing with varying stacks in a MTT is raising more than necessary at times like these. Oh and yes, I realize I got very lucky.

11 left now!

I hate these big blind levels! Killing my stack...just want the final table to hurry up and get here, so I won't have to post 2 out of every 6 hands.I'm the shortstack of the whole tourney too.

Out in 11th...pushed with A6. BB called with AJ and won....how much more frustrating can it be to go out one spot before the big money kicks in at the final table?

Theres a $535 WSOP tourney in 15 minutes. Now I have on desire to play in a WSOP qualifier, but if theres less than 22 people entered, then they just give out the normal cash prizes. Right now theres only 13 people entered. I would think that theres a decent amount of bad players trying to play in these just for a shot at big money, so I'm definitely going to sit if they don't get the full 22.

Tough decision.

Perect...only 20 players registered in the WSOP event. Just as I had hoped. Its starting now....however, registration might still be open. Crap, I think I'm going to get sucked into playing for a WSOP trip.

Yup, I didn't realize that they'd keep it open after the tourney started. Oh well, guess I'm playing for the WSOP trip now. That means that only 1st place pays anything here.

QQ runs into AA and I"m out of the $35K guaranteed event. I think I could've gotten away from it, but its hard to lay it down in a low buy in tourney against bad players who could be overplaying anything. Oh well.

In a very annoying Party Poker move, after 2 guys were eliminated, the two remaining tables play hand for hand now, which makes it go so slow.

At the final table of the satellite now. I'm at 2500...havn't won any signicant pot at all. Average is 6600. Only the top spot pays.

First break at WSOP event. I'm at 3300, 7300 is average, 9 people left, only the top spot pays anything.

 Assani, at what point do you start taking some of the good advice in this thread? With the way you are running now, if you continue at your limits playing your same game, I will be amazed if you even finish this quest (even in the red).

If after 100 days I'm losing, then I'll look to change things. Many people here seem to think that this $30K downswing is crippling me, but its really not that huge of a deal at all. I'm perfectly fine. I'll continue to play as I have played for the past 3 years until my bankroll shows me that its no longer working.I want to win this quest. I can't do that at lower limits really.

What can you afford to lose? What's the limit?

Good question here. Your bankroll before the quest was somewhere up around 60k, correct? What if your 30k downswing turns into a 60k downswing? A 90k downswing? Is there a point where you become concerned about your finances? It's an important question. Believe me, I should know.

I love how people are handing out advice when they aren't really accomplished at what they are talking about. Gamblers, real gamblers have to be able to play without regard for money. Until you can operate that way, you'll never be able to gamble for high stakes with success. If you ever hear a gambler say he's never gone bust, then he is either 1) lying or 2) not a serious high stakes gambler. Good luck on your quest Assani.

I agree, but everybody has a limit. I'm just wondering what his is.edit: I certainly don't think he should ever play penny tables. What a waste of time that would be.

My monthly expenses are about $2000 or so, but I usually spend a lot more on stuff that I don't really need. So if I got down to under $8000(4 months expenses) then I'd probably look at getting a real job. Until then, I'm fine- I know that I'm a winning poker player and losing will never affect me unless I think I'm being outplayed on a consistent basis.

Do you attribute your losing streak to bad luck? Have you been the victim of many bad beats? Just curious.

I totally agree. Luckily I really don't have a need for a ton of money at this point in my life, so I'm not too concerned with losing.I'm 23 years old

I pay $200 month for rent(I explain why its so low in that "Can Assani make it as a poker pro" thread)

I pay my cell phone bill

I pay cable and internet bill

I pay for food

I pay for alcohol

Thats about the extent of my required expenses. At this point in my life, I'm really looking to take a few shots to make it big(for example, even though my bankroll isn't high enough to support it, I'm planning on buying into the WSOP ME). And if I fail, then I'll just get a real job and live out my life.

Gotta take a shot while I'm young I figure.

The last thing I want to do is sound like I'm whining and turn this into that type of thread, so I'll just admit that the losing is my fault. I still feel as if I can win at all of the games I'm playing at, particularly the MTTs, which I feel like I am by far the best player at 99% of the tables I sit at in those. As for the $10/20 NLHE ring games, it is a relatively tough game, and if I'm not able to beat that during this quest, I may just have to admit that I'm not good enough yet to consistently win there.

From your stories, it sounds like you should definitely be looking into that.

Perhaps I would have if it continued to be a problem for me. But I can't think of any worse advice for a "gambler" than "you have to be able to play without regard for money."

Seriously dude, I know you think this coke habit has you beat, but the only way to beat it is just to do more and not care.

You not understanding the concept is exactly why you aren't a successful high stakes gambler. It isn't a life for everyone. After all, if it were that easy everyone would do it. I'm not good at golf, so I don't play.

I understand the concept entirely. But, be as "good" as you like, it's still gambling, and you're still just as likely to lose 30 grand in as month as you are to win it (as evidenced by this thread). That's concept enough for me.How many "big name" "high stakes" poker players go completely broke and end up in a ditch? I'll bet LOTS of them.

I'm guessing you gamble for a living?

"Many people here seem to think that this $30K downswing is crippling me, but its really not that huge of a deal at all. "

now how many times have I said that? good luck Mr Fisher, its all about the attitude, keep it positive :boxing:

I'm not a poker eggspurt or anything, but Barry Greenstein said that "not knowing the value of a dollar" is a key trait for a great high stakes poker player.

:goodposting: GOOD LUCK BRO... HANG IN THERE.

Actually what he says in Ace on the River is "knowing the value of money is negatively correlated to being a good poker player."

I wish poker sites would allow you to represent $$ in terms of BB's instead of dollar amounts.

I don't disagree with this at all. You'd have to be a complete moron not to understand that the guy who doesn't give a crap about the money on the table is going to have a leg up on the guy who is sweating the thought of throwing a 5k bluff out on the table. That said, you're walking a dangerous like when you suggest that a guy who is 30 large in the hole over the past few weeks should start caring less about the value of a dollar. If Assani has a few hundred thousand dollars and some real estate under his belt, I agree the 30k means little. But he's a 22 year old kid who has gone into hock with family members and others in the past when he gambled away all he had. He has a little money in the bank and folks here are suggesting that he should just continue pissing it away at the same rate.

Heaven forbid there be a voice of reason around here

Fair point, and obviously I'd like to see the kid succeed (as would everyone), but just figured I'd sprinkle a dose of reality around here. And, of course, try to recruit others for the poker quit club.

This is the part I don't understand Otis.Over the past 40 days, I am down $600.

Over the past 6 months I am up around $70K.

Over the past 3 years, I'm up somewhere around $150K(thats a total estimate...no real clue)

I understand that I've lost $30K in the past 30 days or so. I understand that I can ony blame bad luck for so much and that I must look to find what parts of my game I can improve. Believe me, not a day goes by that I don't think about ways to improve my game and what I should be doing. However, I'm not panicing at all because of the above results that I have to fall back on.

That kind of variance is not unusual at the limits he's playing at. You've experienced nearly that much variance yourself when you were not playing nearly as many tables as he has been. Most likely you were not doing anything wrong when you were "pissing away" your profits nor are you particularily unlucky. Thats just the way NL Hold'em is. Very streaky.Quite frankly, I think $60K is not nearly enough bankroll to be six or eight tabling $10/20 NL and I'm glad to see him sticking to MTT's for a while.
