I saw you were in Bluff magazine this month.

Yea I was at the Orleans last night and stopped in their poker room to see if they had the magazine, but they didn't. I'll keep my eyes out for it.
Holy crap! That's awesome--you're on your way to poker glory. They had to of contacted you before writing this article, right? How is your WSOP run coming along? You have a busy schedule of events on the horizon?

Unfortunately, I might not make it out to Vegas, and I most certainly won't be playing the Main Event, despite winning a qualifier. As I'm sure you can understand, how can any player comfortably drop $10,000 on a single tournament entry when that's half of their bankroll? I kinda wish Poker Stars forced qualifier winners to play in the event, rather than handing over $12,500 and saying "go do what you want with this".
Yea I did a phone interview with them.I'm 0/3 in WSOP events so far, so nothing good yet. Would play the $1500 tomorrow, but we're going out to eat for Eddie's birthday, so my next event will probably be the $2000 on Thursday. I'm gonna try to play alot of $5/10/20 PLO there this week though.

Yea I think its most definitely a smart move for you to pocket the cash since its so much of your bankroll.

I went ahead and put the guy all-in since he only had about 2500 more..

first pusher had 88, cold-caller had KK.

it held up.

I was kicking myself.. I know it's a 10R and you can't give 'em too much credit, but a col-caller of a push like that probably has a top 5 hand.. i think AK or JJ was about the highest hopes I had there of being ahead.

Granted, if he has AK, the extra money from the original pusher makes it worth it...

Either way, it blew my whole tourney and now it's over.

####. One of the Detroit Casino poker rooms used to give out free copies of Bluff Magazine. I'll keep my eyes open on that. Keep grinding it out in the WSOP tourneys. You're due for a hot streak! I can feel it! :wall: Re: Dentist's hand: it was pretty obvious to me that you would only post that hand history if one of the guys had aces or kings. :hophead:

Actually I'm really pissed I didn't have the fortitude to fold.. I've laid down queens correctly on numerous occasions and I should've thought this one through more.. unless you have no respect for your opponent, you have to fold there..Notice what the cold-caller did with just "calling" instead of pushing to maximize his chances at isolation.. that's classic STRENGTH.. I do that all the time if I wouldn't mind a call. Should've been able to see through it.Surprised Assani posted a definitive call response... I think calling there is really not the right play

MTT strategy question: We've played through the first break of a tournament and due to some up and down play by myself, I was still stuck at the original starting stack of about 3,000 chips.Blinds are 200.400 with a 25-chip ante. A player in MP with about 4,000 chips pushes allin.I look down at 88 in the small blind. Call or fold?
Depends. Any money left in your account, or would you have to steal more to play again?

If he gets called out he is joking of course, but in the back of his mind he is hoping someone is dumb enough to do it. The guy is a scammer plain and simple.

There's more ways to make AK and JJ than AA or KK. You are getting more than 3:1. With no read I think call is correct here. I agree with your read of his play if you know the player but since you have no read then you have to make the statistical play IMO.

Played the $1500 PLO event today...got up to 5K in chips(started with 3K) early, but then slowly dwindled down....just no hands, and you really have to flop well to win in a PLO tourney, as you're not going to be able to steal blinds or bluff enough to stay alive. Playing some online MTTs now. A bit frustrated with the World Series so far....live poker can be tough when the cards aren't coming since theres so few hands per hour. Just feeling like I'm going to lose these days, which kinda sucks. I know its just a minor downswing though, but I just so badly want to run well right now more than any other time in the year. Hopefully I can turn things around. I think the next one I'll be in is the $2000 NLHE on Thursday.

Try a couple $1 SNGs to get back that feeling of winning!

Thanks for the words of wisdom. Yes the gambling was definitely a poor decision and me just getting caught up in the fun and the moment. The AJ hand was super standard though...I had an M of less than 5 and pushed with AJ from MP. The guy right after me happened to have JJ and called and won. Unless I'm thinking of a different hand, then that definitely wasn't a rash play. I thought my bad play from that night was my TT hand where I called a 3 bet preflop, called a flop bet, checked behind on the turn, and then folded to an all in on the river when an ace came.

I am doing well in the tourneys I'm in now($1050 Stars Super Tuesday, Stars $100rebuy, FG $65K guaranteed, Stars Nightly hundred Grand), so hopefully I can turn things around here.

Any chance you'll make it out to Vegas this summer, Ham?

I remember a few years ago I was at least mulling over the possibility of playing poker professionally. You evaluated some of my play and told me (correctly) that I wasn't ready because I had not mastered the fine art of divorcing emotion from my play. One thing I've always admired about you, amongst many, is your reptile-like focus on the mechanics of the game... Which is why I'd like to throw back some of the advice you gave me at you... I've noticed two things in the last few days that lead me to the belief that you need to take a deep breath. One was the night you gambled away $3,000 having fun and just running cards. Remember, you're a professional and this behavior should be unacceptable. It's good to have gamble in you, but don't gamble. That $3,000 could have been two entries to WSOP events. The second thing I noticed was a night you were deep in a tourni and made a rash play with AJ against JJ. You admitted that you were playing bad. The fact that both of these things happened this week and they seem uncharacteristic, followed by your downbeat post above, could be an indication that you need a day or two off to just refocus and remember where your center is.I could be totally wrong... Hey, what do I know? But I do like you and I want to see you do well. You're a hell of a player... But being a pro player is like walking the tight rope every night without a net. Best of luck out there.
This is solid advice. I'll never admit to being a pro, but I have made my fair share when the competition was weak. One thing I did was to evaluate how I did at the end of the night (or when I wake up in the morning if it's very late) and have a short journal entry -- either about poker or what was on my mind during the poker session. Looking back, they were never more than 2-3 sentences. What I did was had a rule that if one of those 2-3 sentences was a negative remark about my play or emotional state, I would spend the following day reviewing hands and talking about poker for a bit, then relaxing with friends. I would not play that day. I am not saying this is a great system or what should be done by all poker players, but what I am saying is that you need to focus on yourself instead of the cards, and act accordingly. You've made it this far, you know what you are doing.Best of luck, westy

God poker is frustrating sometimes
Why does this hand get to you? Seems to me like you made the best play.
I think one of my best strengths is never showing emotion(when playing live) and I very rarely let beats affect my play(live or online). With that said, EVERYONE gets frustrated by hands like that imo, and I try to be honest in this thread.

lucky me, actually read the situation correctly in that I knew Bostero would squeeze lightly there, but I was scared of the cold call by Universe but decided it was worth the risk. Honestly not sure how I feel about my play here(obviously happy to get lucky though)

interesting hand. Btw for everyone who questions why I min. raise so much its because I do it so often that it gets played back at like in this hand.
I don't doubt that min-raising gets you some action. This hand isn't a great example of it, though. I only question whether you get *enough* extra action across your range of holdings to offset the action you give up (e.g., frequently winning blinds/antes; overrepping the bottom of your range) by foregoing bigger raises. It's not at all clear to me that you do. But I'm trying to learn, so, please, keep the examples coming.
